_____________ RELEVANCY Students will learn how to make multilayered composition using various methods and mediums.

CONNECTION TO THEME This project will align itself with our theme contrast by the use of incorporating both product and material in the composition and by making distinctions between foreground and background.

GOAL Using found objects with various textures, shapes and sizes students will create an abstracted painting, which will then be torn and collaged as an interior make-up of a portrait style hand drawing. This project will enforce art-learning principles of layering, contour drawing, abstraction, collage, and foreground/background. . The composition includes the shape of the students hands collaged with the printed material in addition to the actual objects used to make the marks. LEARNING OUTCOME As a result of this lesson, students will be able to: Mix colors, Incorporate elements of layering, Make Complex Compositions using various mediums, Incorporate text within future Art pieces, Understand concepts of contour drawing, and appreciate art processes. PREPARATION BEFORE CLASS A table with materials will be set up and distributed neatly so that students can choose what objects they want to use for stenciling. The classroom will be clean and the worktable will be clear for students to sit during introduction. LESSON DEVELOPMENT

MOTIVATIONAL STRATEGIES (introduction through dialogue, key questions, demonstration, slides, reproductions, visuals, music, costumes, other, or a combination) 5:00-5:10 Introduction: In getting to know each other we will play a brief Icebreaker exercise get students acquainted with us and us with them. (Toilet tissue game) 5:10-5:20 Using our project example Patrick and I will show our Graffiti Name Plate example and probe the students on how we might have made it: - Today we will be making graffiti Name Plates incorporating our hands and hand gestures that mean something to us. - What is graffiti? - What Materials were used when making our nameplate? (We will then explain process through discussion) 5:20-5:30 Teachers will hand out pieces of black matte paper. Students will be instructed to trace their hands on the paper and to creatively draw their name/ nickname (graffiti-style) on their plate. 5:30-5:40 by gathering objects that the students think might make interesting marks and mixing a variety of colors. Using a piece of white paper and the wide variety of color paints, students will begin making marks on the paper. Music will be played to motivate the students who will be free to make as many marks as possible. 5:40-5:45- Students will personalize their sketchbook as the paint dries 5:45-6:25 After completing the mark-making part of the lesson, the students will be asked to tear up the paper into small pieces. Students will use the pieces of marked paper and glue sticks to fill in the shapes of their hands, thinking about

how the collage of marks look together. How does the color effect the overall composition? Which marks do they choose to emphasize. Students will be encouraged to decorate their graffiti with the chalk pastels When this is completed the students will glue all of the objects that they used to make marks to the matte board. 6:25-6:30 Clean Up-All students must begin clean up at their work area. This includes cleaning brushes, pouring out water, throwing away paper, and collecting all materials. Work will be stored on-site.

LITERACY + VOCABULARY COMPONENTS Composition-a thing composed of various elements Contour- an outline Collage- a form of art in which various materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric are arranged and stuck to a backing. ADDITIONAL RELATED ACTIVITIES (For Those Who Finish Early) Starting on their next weeks project: students will be asked to start thinking about emotions and drawing examples of emotions that contrast

IN CLASS REFLECTION Important Include Dialogue + Questions Taking a look at the final composition, what is your favorite part apart the making The Graffiti Name Plate piece? What do you enjoy product or process? What decisions did you make when organizing the composition? RELATED LESSONS FOR THE FUTURE Making a collaged Contour of their Profile Collages Graffiti Projects ASSESSMENT BY YOUR STUDENTS Student in reflection will make critical analysis of each other work and will talk about decision making. Giving students the Right to assess their own work contributes to our non-authoritarian classroom culture. BY YOU + YOUR PARTNER How will you determine if your outcomes have been met? What method of assessment will you use (see above)? Describe Imani: Outcomes will be met when students are enjoying art-making and exploring materials and their outcomes. When students have finished their pieces and are happy with the result than the project was successful.
