Xavier University Sport Ethics

Philosophy of Sport According to Simon, the Socratic model suggests that the role of philosophy is to examine our beliefs, clarify the principles on which they rest, and subject them to critical examination. Throughout this course, I feel I have been challenged to examine and reevaluate my own beliefs and values as they relate to sport. My philosophy focuses on sport at three levels of participation that were covered throughout the course: youth, intercollegiate, and professional. Although there are common values that relate to all levels of sport participation, I believe the role of sport in society changes as the level of competition increases. At the youth level, participation in sports can play a critical role in a childs development. Sports teach them values and helps define characteristics such as team work and dedication. Sports provide an environment for youth to meet and interact with people from different backgrounds, teaching them tolerance and social skills. At this level of competition, sports can help participants find their identity and build their confidence to try new experiences outside of sports. At the collegiate level, the role of sport in society becomes more visible, drawing more attention from media and reaching individuals that may not have an interest in youth sports. The role of sport in society at this level of competition should be to help student athletes develop and demonstrate the core values and beliefs they learned through participation at the youth level. The purpose should not be to overshadow the academic focus of college, but to

enhance the experience by providing both the student athlete and fans with an outlet to show pride for their school and feel a sense of community among its members. At the professional level, sports play a major role in society. For the athletes, professional sports are their livelihoods. For fans, professional sports provide an outlet from everyday life. Professional sports should be an example for society that success is obtainable and can be accomplished through hard work and perseverance. Instead of an overemphasis on winning, professional sports should celebrate the accomplishments and abilities of top athletes, and give them an opportunity to test themselves mentally and physically. I came across a quote by Olympic Gold Medalist Dan OBrien that embodies what I feel the nature of sport is at any level of competition. OBrien said, The spirit of sports gives each of us who participate an opportunity to be creative. Sport knows no sex, race, or religion. Sport gives us all the ability to test ourselves mentally, physically and emotionally in a way no other aspect of life can. Sports can play an important, positive role in society, but it is the responsibility of coaches, administrators, and league officials to ensure that the true nature of sport is not lost on an overemphasis of winning.
