Title or topic lesson and Grade Level: Dinosaur Research; 2nd Grade Lesson Guiding Question (s): - How

can you use internet sites and nonfiction books to help you answer questions about a topic? - How do the internet/other resources enhance your knowledge about a certain subject? Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. Learning Goals and Assessments: Lesson Objectives TSWBAT compile facts about a dinosaur using non- fiction books and internet sites. Assessments Each group of 2-3 students will have a worksheet with specific questions to answer through research of an assigned dinosaur.

Materials: Laptops for each student, list of eleven dinosaurs, non-fiction books about dinosaurs, research guideline worksheet Pre- lesson assignments and/ or prior knowledge: The students completed a pre-assessment on dinosaurs prior to the start of our unit. Each child has had experience working with laptops and using the internet to find facts about a given topic. Students will also have learned about physical characteristics of dinosaurs as well as information about their diets. Lesson Beginning: This lesson is a continuation of students unit on dinosaurs. Students will be placed into groups of two or three, assigned by the teacher. We will then hand out the worksheet and explain the research assignment to the class as a whole. Each group will choose a dinosaur (dinosaurs names will be written on small pieces of paper). Each student will receive their own laptop and non-fiction books about their dinosaur. Instructional Plan: - Groups will then begin their research. Initial research will include answering questions on a worksheet about their dinosaur, including physical traits, habitat, defenses, behaviors, whether it is an omn/carn/herb/ivore, and any interesting facts. The worksheet will also include a spot for

students to make a rough sketch of their dinosaur. The worksheet should be completed by the end of the first day. Differentiation: Students will be placed in groups by the teacher based on their skill level. This is the first step of the overall research project for the end of our unit, and the worksheet will be assessed before students are able to create their writing pieces. Classroom management: The teachers will be circulating the classroom, making sure students are focused and on task at all times. If students seem to be taking advantage of using the laptop, they will only be allowed to work with the non- fiction books. Transitions: Students will be informed that the research they do today will be applied to a published writing piece. This will motivate each child to do careful and detailed research. Closure: At the end of the class period, students will hand in their worksheets. The teacher will make sure each student has fully and thoroughly completed their worksheet. We will then quickly discuss the continuation of the lesson that will take place the following day.
