Teacher In Space Shares Experiences with Texas Students Sixty 5th grade students at Hamilton Park Pace Setter

Magnet School of Richardson ISD in Texas, had an exciting surprise Friday, February 8th. Teacher In Space Astronaut Trainee, Lanette Oliver, a resident of Valdez, Alaska, was in the Dallas area caring for family members, but took the day to present to Mrs. Brickmans science classes. Ms. Oliver gave three 70 minute presentations about her experiences on the NASA microgravity flight running experiments on magnetism and forces, and her training experiences with the Teachers In Space program. She used videos, PowerPoints, demonstrations, interactive activities, and questioning, to excite students about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and to reinforce concepts in physical science and science processes these students will soon see on their State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) science test. Ms. Oliver then joined the teachers for lunch to further promote the Teachers In Space program among teachers. She stayed for the afternoon for questions/answers and autographs during student homeroom classes, and joined students on the playground for recess to encourage physical fitness. Mrs. Brickman and the students thanked Ms. Oliver for sharing. Ms. Oliver wants to give a shout-out to Mrs. Brickman and the students and to wish them well on their tests.
