Instructions: Answer six (6) questions. Each question carries a weight of 20 marks 1. List the four (4) fundamental principles on which occupational hygiene is based. Explain briefly each principle. 2. An employee is engaged in general clearing activities in a large veterinary practice (i) Identify five possible hazards the cleaner could encounter when undertaking this activity. (ii) Outline the precaution that could be taken to minimize the risk of harm from these hazards. 3. State the main functions of the gastrointestinal tract; how do they relate to the potential hazard from ingested materials. 4. Give a definition of the terms: (i) toxic (ii) harmful (iii) corrosive (iv) irritant Outline the response of the body to inhalation of any one (1) category of hazardous agents. 5. Outline the factors to be considered in the selection of respiratory protection equipment for persons carrying out welding activities. 6. Outline the factors that may increase risks to pregnant employees in the workplace. 7. Discuss the importance of epidemiological studies in the development of a workplace which is conducive to the health of workers. 8. (a) Explain the meaning of the terms: (i) occupational exposure standards (OES). (ii) maximum exposure limit (MEL) (b) Identify five duties place on employers by the UKs Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) 2002 (as amended)
