Defective Rotor Bar Problem

ModulationoftheelectricallinecurrentoccursinanACinductionmotorwithadefectiverotorbar.Ina spectrumofmotorcurrent,thismodulationcreatespolepasssidebandsaroundthelinefrequencypeak(60 HzinNorthAmerica).Thesidebandspacingisequivalenttotheslipfrequencymultipliedbythenumberof poles.Asanexample:IntheUSAatwopolemotoroperatingat3570rpmhasapolepassfrequencyof60 rpm(1Hz).Therefore,wemightexpecttoseealargepeakat60Hzandsidebandsat59and61Hzifthe motorhadadefectiverotorbar.OutsideofNorthAmerica,theelectricallinefrequencyis50Hz.An exampleofamotorinEuropefollows. MotorcurrentsignaturewasperformedinEuropeonaverylargetwopoleinductionmotoroperatingat 2985rpm.Seethespectraldatabelow.The50Hzlinefrequencypeakisclearlyseeninthespectrumonthe left.Inthezoomedspectrumontherightnotethepolepasssidebands(30rpmspacing)aroundtheline frequencypeak. Itisgenerallyacceptedthatifthesidebandsaremorethan55to60dBdownfromthe50Hzpeak,therotor barsareconsideredgood.Ifthesidebandsrisetowithin45to50dBofthe50Hzpeak,damagedrotorbars arelikely.Whenthedeltaislessthan40dB,acrackedrotorbarishighlylikely.Itisimportanttostatethat theserulesonlyapplyfordatatakenfromamotorthatisloadedtoatleast75%ofitsratedload.
