Typhoon survival tips

Its typhoon season again, which means rain, wind, and a tab thats always open at the Hong Kong Observatory home page. But how can you get through the weather with a minimum of fuss? Here are some tips. Fixing duct tape to your windows will help protect you if they shatter in the storm. Similarly, affixing duct tape to your relatives will prevent them from harming you when you lock them out of the house. Can you imagine if a massive typhoon reduced Hong Kong society to Walking Dead levels? Think about this for the next three hours, instead of working. Restaurants may not be open. Remember to stockpile staples such as foie gras, gold statuettes of pigs and buddhas, and Sugus candy. People can be scared of typhoons. To alleviate the fear factor, convince the Hong Kong Observatory to only give typhoons unbearably adorable names. Typhoon Kitten has lashed Taiwan this week, killing twenty. The death toll rises as Typhoon Snuggles ravages the South China coast. The typhoon warning scale goes all the way up to signal 10. But even if gets that high, it doesn't mean she's ever coming back. Alarmists claim that typhoons are getting worse every year. But instead of listening to them, lets just just hold out until 2024, when the rising tides submerge Hong Kong under 20 feet of seawater. On the bright side: gondolas. If you want to find out what its like at the center of the storm, lash yourself to a large fern and instruct your acquaintances to block up their ears with Cantopop tunes so they do not release you. As the typhoon approaches, disregard all advice from the HK Observatory and only pay heed to that one guy in the office with the typhoon track open on his browser at all times. This is his big day. You wouldnt want to ruin it. When it comes to typhoon signals, always bet on black.

How to Solve Our Waste Crisis

Reduce Waste at Source. The slogan from the government sounds catchy, but in reality, its all just a bunch of rubbish. The recent uproar over the expansion of Hong Kongs landfills, which according to officials will reach maximum capacity within this decade, has me wondering, Are the Hong Kong people and its government really understanding the bigger picture? I unequivocally believe that is a resounding no. Lets look at the facts: Our landfills will be full very soon. The people of Hong Kong do not want to expand our landfills. Tuen Mun feels it isnt fair that its landfill must expand while Tseung Kwan Os does not. Finally, no one really knows what to do, so the people just protest while the elected officials point fingers. Now lets get back to Hong Kongs rubbish plan: reducing waste at source. How many people can honestly say that they recycled their take-out dinner containers from last night? Did you recycle your plastic drink bottle today? If you dont take simple steps to recycle, then you have no right to complain, as you are a part of the problem rather than the solution. Instead of protesting and complaining and hunger striking, start asking questions, such as, Are there really enough recycling receptacles in Hong Kong? Is our recycling actually being taken care of properly? Can there be some monetary incentive for those who do choose to recycle? We are the sources. We must be mindful of our daily choices and how we dispose of our waste. Nick Anderson, North Point Via email

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

How could the US government issue documents each bearing three different names for Snowden? This shows their practice is sloppy.
Legislator and barrister Ronny Tong Ka-wah snaps back after the US accused the Hong Kong government of using the confusion over Snowdens name as an excuse for not detaining the whistleblower before he left for Russia. Hong Kong officials claimed that the US arrest warrant listed Snowdens middle name as James, while his passport says Joseph. According to Hong Kongs Secretary of Justice, Washington calls him Edward J. Snowden.

Snowden boards a plane to Moscow at 10:55am and leaves Hong Kong, after his home country asks Hong Kong to detain and extradite the former CIA contract employee. Snowden said earlier that he would let the courts and the people of Hong Kong decide his fate. According to legislator Albert Ho, a middle man from the government urged Snowden to leave.

The citys streets might look fairly clear of rubbish, but dont let that fool you. Lisa Christensen (R) and Nissa Marion (L), organizers of HK Clean Upan annual volunteer trash-collecting competitiontalk to Yannie Chan about Hong Kongs litterbugs.
HK Magazine: What makes you so passionate about picking up trash? Nissa Marion: When I first moved to Hong Kong, I thought the city was clean. But when I first joined HK Clean Up in 2003, which was founded by Lisa, I saw a beach filled with garbage: plastic bottles, plastic bags... I was shocked that a place that seems as clean as Hong Kong does could actually have so much trash. So I asked if I could volunteer more with HK Clean Up, and eventually became the manager of the organization. But HK Clean Up is not so much about getting trash off the streets as it is about letting people see how much trash there is. When you walk through the streets of Hong Kong, people are like, yeah the streets are pretty clean, and they are, because we have thousands of city workers taking trash away every day. HK: Where [and when] in Hong Kong do you find the most trash? Lisa Christensen: Around September. Because of the tides, the beaches on Lamma, Lantau and anywhere close to the Pearl River Delta are hit really badly. And then also the Sai Kung area. The trash is mostly from Hong Kong. HK: How does trash end up in the ocean and then on the beach? NM: Trash escapes either in transit to the landfill, or right from trash cans that are poorly designed, or from the landfill during rainy and windy days. Or people drop things in the country park. LC: Usually people arent dropping trash near the ocean, but in the city and country parks, and the wind blows them into the ocean. Thats why we began with the coastal cleanup challenge to make people aware that the problem of trash-filled beaches starts right here at home. HK: Whats the HK Clean Up experience like for you? NM: I actually have lost count of how many times Ive been moved to tears by some child that comes up to me and says, Im never using plastic bottles again. LC: A couple years ago, we did a beach cleanup with a very large, publicly listed company in Hong Kong. The chairman of the company was there, working alongside the tea lady. They were both trying to get this rope out of this rock. Most of these people have never met the chairman. To see them working together to clean up trash... thats what is lovely about Hong Kong. HK: What is some of the weirdest trash youve found? NM: We have a prize for the weirdest item found every year. We have everything from mannequins to appliances, such as refrigerators and washing machines. We found a prosthetic leg once. LC: We also found a taxi car door, music instruments and every kind of underwear imaginable. Every size, shape and color. HK: What tops the list of trash you find every year? LC: Lots and lots and lots and lots of disposable plastics. NC: Since the 50-cent levy was introduced in 2009, we dont see as many bags from brands like Park N Shop. Its working. But disposable plastic bags are still the number one item. HK: So, as environmental activists, do you want HK Clean Up to grow and collect more trash? LC: Our absolute goal, actually, is to stop HK Clean Up. Hopefully within the next 15 to 20 years we will be able to stop HK Clean Up entirely.

Scrap the US-Hong Kong Policy Act

How should Hong Kong be punished for its treachery? Stephen Young, US Consul General, has expressed anger over Hong Kongs deliberate transfer of American dissident Edward Snowden to Moscow. The acerbic degree of frank rhetoric employed by American officials against Hong Kong was almost comparable to the speech President Roosevelt gave after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, although short of the famous frankness of a date which will live in infamy. Though this was the handiwork of a small bunch of anti-American zealots led by CY Leung, allegedly under instructions from Beijing, its unlikely theyll be treated the way targeted chemo treats cancer, with only his cabinet and senior SAR government officials receiving the American punishment. As Hong Kong intellectuals, including legislators from the Civic Party, pointed out in protests against the American handover, Hong Kong as a whole will be held responsible. According to the US-Hong Kong Policy Act legislated by the American Congress in 1992, if Hong Kong is not sufficiently autonomous to justify special treatment, the US could simply treat Hong Kong as an ordinary city of China. This means Hong Kongs One Country Two Systems status can be declared void by Washington rather than Beijing. The US could then ban the sale of advanced computer technologies to Hong Kong. This could mean Hong Kong teenagers will not get the latest iPhone 6 as soon as it is released, as special approval may have to be obtained before Apple could release it here. Hong Kongs Observatory may also have their capital purchase list for the latest electronic surveillance equipment rejected by the Pentagon. Hong Kongs university qualifications will also be treated with the suspicion usually reserved for Chinas academies, where first-class honors results can be paid for. If the US government follows the US-Hong Kong Policy Act, Citibank and Bank of America will have to consider moving their bases from Hong Kong, causing tens of thousands of job redundancies. Central will lose its glamor without the Act, although mainland shoppers will still be able to roam about with their Lane Crawford bags. Since the US-Hong Kong Policy Act has been cursed by China as evidence of a US attempt to inflame Hong Kongs separation or even independence from China, an American rejection of our city would help speed up our full reunion with the Motherland. This will make both democrats and the pro-China DAB unanimously happy. The PLA could then crack down on the Occupy Central protests more relentlessly knowing that the US consulate on Garden Road was to be closed and turned into another Sun Hung Kai property development project, with all applications for US tourist visas diverted to Guangzhou. This will mark Hong Kongs rebirth.

First Contact
To commemorate HK Magazines 999th issue, Yannie Chan and Sean Hebert meet the brave police officers, firemen and paramedics that make up our emergency services.

hether youve singed your kitchen ceiling or toppled off a junk, you can always count on Hong Kongs first responders. These brave men and women work tirelessly to rescue us from danger, get us access to crucial emergency health care and combat crime. What better time is there than in our 999th issue to learn a little more about them?

The Police
The police force in Hong Kong is both a point of pride and a cultural icona centerpiece of the citys golden era of action cinema and the beacon holders of our reputation as Asias safest city. With a long and checkered history since its inception in 1844, our police force has grown and evolved alongside our city to become one of the best trained and motivated forces in the world. In fact, the 30,000 officers on our streets rivals the size of the police presence in cities like New York and London. We sat down with uniformed constable Ha Chi-him of Mong Kok police station to get a better understanding of what life is like on the beat.

Suit Up
Uniformed police officers make up most of the force patrolling the streets, and they wear the classic policeman cap. Each unit has a different uniform. Police officers from the Emergency Unit (EU), myself included, wear berets, light blue uniforms and leather shoes. Every police officer is assigned a unique number that appears on our shouldermine is 8296. Whenever we are outside the police station, we are required to wear our full suit and put on the beret. You have no idea how hot it gets. only speak a foreign language. But, just as it happened the last time I needed to talk to a man who spoke only Japanese, usually a passer-by who knows both of our languages will magically come up to us and help with the translation.

Hongkongers do not like police officers that much. Firefighters and paramedics are always there to save lives, but we are there to enforce the law.

more importantly, to confirm their location. Its very common that people get their location wrong. The first thing we do is talk to the victim and get a first-person account of what happened. For example, with burglary and robbery cases, which are some of the most frequent cases

The Belt
I carry six items on my belt daily. My gun is stored in the right pocket, and next to it is a bullet-loading device. The other pockets store respectively a can of pepper spray, a police baton, a communicative device and handcuffs. Together they weigh 12 to 13 pounds.

Tactical Roots
Before I joined the Mong Kok station, I worked in the Police Tactical Unit (PTU) in the East Kowloon district. While the EU responds after an incident is reported, the PTU takes a more proactive stance in combating crime. We identify black spots for criminal offences, such as pickpockets and robberies, and place a number of undercover policemen in the area. There is always a pattern to robberies and pickpockets: if a thief does it one time, the chances are he will do it again soon, and in the same area. When something happens, the undercover police officers will wait for the criminal to act, and then emerge and arrest him.

in the West Kowloon district, we ask the victim for details and a physical description of the suspect.

An Officers Best Friend

Packing Heat
The most remarkable thing I learned from police training school is how to properly treat and use our guns. We were taught that having a gun comes with a complicated set of legal responsibilities. Being a police officer does not mean we are exempt from the law, so we can still be charged with murder if there is no justifiable reason for us to use our weapon. Internal regulations state that we can only use our guns if our lives or someone elses lives are being threatened. I havent been in that situation before, and I hope that I never will.

There is a dog in each police van, usually in the afternoon and late at night. They are trained to attack and go after criminals. From my experience, however, they do not need to be in attack mode to control suspects, especially during what we call midnight violence, which refers to gang fights in the middle of the night. These gang members run away when only we are there, but stay surprisingly still when they see a growling dog.

On Patrol
Before our shift starts, six of us line up before the loading and unloading area. We retrieve our guns and then a superior issues commands to load the bullets. After our shift, we do the same thing to unload the bullets and then hand them back. Its a very serious daily procedure. After that, the team patrols in police vans and sends out two people at a time to patrol the streets. This mostly serves crime-preventive purposes. With a police van parked prominently and police officers patrolling the street, potential criminals think twice before acting. When we patrol the streets, we need to be able to spot crimes before they happen. If people avoid my glances or turn the other way when they see us, I will keep an extra pair of eyes on them.

Above the Law

Someone called in this one time and said that a man had been robbed at Kam Shan Country Park, so we went there hoping to ferret out the criminal. We spoke to the caller and found the victim. He was very distressed and hoped that we could recover his goods. We slowly realized that it was the monkeys who stole from him. Nothing we can do but laughmonkeys are not under our jurisdiction.

Language Barriers
Most police officers speak only Cantonese, with a reasonable amount of English. Its a problem when dealing with people who

Serve and Protect

Hongkongers do not like police officers that much. Firefighters and paramedics are always there to save lives, but we are there to enforce the law. We charge and arrest people, and sometimes I find myself in an antagonistic relationship with civilians, which is not the best feeling. I love it, though, when you get to know the people in your area, which you can only do through patrols. When I go through my usual streets and past markets, the owners will greet me and ask how my day is. Its great to connect with the people we protect. Its these little things that motivate me to get to work every day.

999 Calls
The command center tracks our position and notifies our team of reported emergencies near us. We will be given the address and a quick story on what happened. The EU then

What It Takes
All firemen are trained for 26 weeks at the fire training school. But during our working days, we also train while standing by for emergency calls. We work a 24-hour shift and then get 48 hours off. Our shift starts 9am every morning. First thing first, we check that our equipment and fire trucks are working properly. Its a long but crucial process. I test each ropes flexibility and see if there are any tears. Then we begin our physical exercise, which includes running up and down the stairs. The firemen train in their specialized areas such as firefighting, blasting and rescues. Then we play sports games with our team. The routine would repeat until the shift ends. Of course, wed get to nap and eat in between.

Addressing Hong Kongs Unique Needs

The Fire Services Department also handles cases called special services. Usually that means saving people stuck in elevators, industrial accidents, flooding and attempted suicides. The variety of different cases prompted the Department to establish different teams: Diving Services, Urban Rescue and Search Team to find victims buried in rubble; Hazmat Team to deal with accidents involving hazardous materials; and the High Angle Rescue Team, which I joined two years ago to provide rescue services of victims from tall buildings.

Firefighters
The Fire Services Departments 577 vehicles were dispatched in response to more than 37,000 calls in 2012 alone. Whether its smoke billowing out of a microwave or an entire high-rise condo set ablaze, the 9,000-plus uniformed officers do heroic work every day to keep their fellow citizens safe. In response to our request to learn a bit more about the profession, 25-year veteran Chao Koon-ho (nickname: Rambo) from the Tin Sum Fire Station was happy to sit down and give us a glimpse into his world.

requires us to be extra cautious so as to minimize property damage to homeowners. We dont break into homes just because neighbors or security staff report a fire; we have to confirm where the smoke is coming from by sending firefighters one floor below and one floor above the reported apartment.

Its Not A Movie

In TV shows and movies, the breaking-in looks very dramatic a loud bang, firefighters rush in, and water is sprayed everywhere. In real life, we never stand in front of the door, but by the walls beside it. We always destroy the locks slowly, inch by inch. Thats because if theres a fire inside, and we break open the door suddenly, a large amount of oxygen would rush in, sending the fire in our direction. Instead, we use a fire source detection device that identifies the spot with the highest temperature and then we concentrate the water there. Sometimes theres just a small pot on the stove or the television... no need to waste water and flood someones home for that.

Up in the Air
The high angle rescue team trains once every month at Hong Kongs cable car sites. We climb up onto the top of the cable car tower, learn to install a secured rope system, and then practice getting from one cable car to another. We train at the Tsing Ma Bridge, too. We climb all the way to the very top of the bridge to practice lowering a person who might be stuck there. Even though I was trained to be at ease in high places, when I look down from the top of the bridge, I feel like my heart stops for an instant.

The Bell Rings

The government promises a response time of six minutes. The operator already takes up one minute before we even hear the bell, which leaves us with five to arrive at the scene. We need to start moving as soon as possible. Even when we are in the loo, we have to stop whatever business we are doing and get going. There isnt any trickjust get on your feet and run.

A Terrifying Rescue
This April, four workers were working on top of an industrial elevator when it started rising on its own. To avoid getting crushed by the ceiling of the elevator shaft, they grabbed on to the sides of the elevator. The elevator stopped near the rooftop, and one workers arm was stuck between the elevator and a steel frame. He was hanging 80 meters off the ground. Our team went to the top of the building and got the three other people out safely. I put on the safety belt, set up the vertical rope system and suspended myself in mid-air next to the worker. I looked down and saw nothing between me and the ground 80 meters belowmy palms were wet with sweat. The rescue took me almost two hours, but we successfully got the man out.

Steeling Yourself
When were at a scene, we are trained to keep our feelings at bay. To be honest, after a while I dont feel as much for the victims. You learn to become professional. After 25 years, I can tell you that I dont feel much sympathy for adult victims because Im so focused on carrying out my work. But when it comes to children, its a completely different story. Im a father now, and when I see kids in a fire scene, I cant help but feel protective. I would always save the kid first between a child and an adult.

On the Scene
At a reported fire scene, the standard procedure is to dispatch four fire trucks and one ambulance, no matter how minor the case is. A more serious case would call for a major rescue unit, which is a fire truck equipped with more rescue tools than a light rescue unit. The other three fire trucks include a major bump, which connects to street hydrants, a hydraulic platform, which acts as the command center and comes with an elevated platform for firefighting and rescue operations, and a ladder truck, with a 52-meter-long ladder that extends up to the 18th floor.

The Dark Side

In this job, you see things that stay with you. Theres this one time that I witnessed the evil in humanity. It was my third year in the service in 1990, and a fire was reported at the Vietnamese refugee center in Shek Kong. The northern Vietnamese had locked all the southern Vietnamese in a room and set them on fire. We were standing right outside, but we couldnt get in because the northern Vietnamese were still rioting. We could do nothing but watch the fire burning the people inside. When the police took control of the scene, there were only burnt bodies in the room. I realized then that humans can be very ugly.

Approaching a Fire
We always need to interpret the call and never take the reported address and details at face value. The caller is under stress and he or she can make mistakes, but we cant afford any mistakes because its much harder to put out a fire once it spreads. When were unsure of the fire source, our training

It took me a long time to accept that there are lives I cannot save.

PAramedics
Ambulance paramedics save lives on a daily basis. And not just any lives, but those that hinge on how fast they receive medical treatment. Every second counts for our citys first responders, and whether its up high-rises or through heavy traffic, Hong Kong presents a unique set of challenges for those in need.

Day In, Day Out

The governments ambulance command center is obliged to send a team of medics out to for each and every 999 call they receive, which number nearly 2,000 daily. Compare that to the 200 calls made daily to firefighters, and that means a lot of ambulances on the move. From the second your call is picked up, the government promises that an ambulance will reach the scene of the emergency in 12 minutes. Broken down, thats two minutes for the operator to assess your situation and dispatch an ambulance, and 10 minutes for the medics to get to the scene. Each ambulance contains three qualified emergency technicians: a driver, an IC (person-in-charge) and an attendant. We take either the morning or night shift, each lasting 12 hours, says Chan Shi-kai, a medic of 32 years who is stationed at the Ma On Shan ambulance depot. We get two days off, after two day shifts and one night shift, he says, adding that while his team typically takes six or seven calls per shift, those on Kowloon side are dispatched more than 10 times in a work day. While lesser-known to the public, the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance also provides all-day emergency servicesone of the few NGOs in the world to do so voluntarily and for free. Since St. John has only 14 ambulances (the government has more than 300), the dispatchers notify their callers if they know they wont satisfy the 12 minute response time. If they cant make it within 20 minutes, they advise patients to call 999 instead.

Race against time

Heres an impressive stat: more than 92 percent of calls made to 999 meet the promised 12 minute time limit. But how, given our criminally congested roads? While ambulance drivers are legally exempt from road regulations during emergency situations, the drivers we spoke to were adamant that speeding and running red lights isnt the most effective way to get to a scene quickly, especially on highways. One effective tactic is termed Moses Crossing the Red Sea. We drive the ambulance in between the lanes, explains superintendent Lung Ngai-cheung of the St John ambulance brigade. Drivers will move to the side and create this space for our vehicle to pass through. When trying to maneuver through highway traffic jams caused by an accident that they want to reach, ambulances will sometimes drive in the oncoming lane to get there quicker. Its a practice not often used, as it usually means that ambulance workers have to step out into the non-obstructed lanes full of moving cars. Its likely to cause another accident on its own, Chan says. Years ago, we had a case of an ambulance medic getting hit by a car on a highway.

the latter of which is ideally treated within four minutes. In these cases, the medics hope that friends and family on scene are trained in quick and correct treatment. Squarely in the ugly camp, say medics, are drunken men, whose physical and mental unpredictability makes them dangerous to treat. Chan recalls suffering an injured spine after an unusually strong man resisted treatment. He beat the crap out of all three of us, he says: It took many security guards to tie him up before we could send him to the hospital.

Far Out
Weve been to most places imaginable, says Lai, whos ventured to unmapped border villages, abandoned homes and mountaintops in his ambulance. He shared a story with us about a man who fainted halfway through a hiking competition in Sai Kung. There were no roads for the ambulance, and the Government Flying Service was unable to reach the location. My team went searching for the man on foot, Lai says. It took a two-hour hike to get there, followed by a three-hour return trip. We were carrying first-aid kits, trolley beds and then a human being. I still have no idea how I managed it. Ip Choi-on, an ambulanceman-in-charge for the St John Ambulance, says some peoples reasons for calling for help never fail to surprise him. After receiving a call in Western district without any details, the team rushed to the site, only to find two university students waiting for them by the road. I asked them to lead me to the patient, because they look perfectly all right, Ip says. One of them pointed to herself and said she had sore gums. The general rule is that if you can bring yourself to the hospital, Ip says, you dont need an ambulance.

To the Heavens
Though all skyscrapers and tall housing estates come with reliable and fast elevators, they are usually too small to fit in a medical trolley bed, which forces medics to resort to the second-best option: wheelchairs. Its not as safe, as it does not secure patients as tightly, Chan says. I think there should be regulations on the size of elevators. Older buildings such as tong laus have no elevators at all. Ambulance paramedics then bust out human elevators. We physically carry the wheelchair eight or nine floors up and then down, Chan explains. Thats why many ambulancemen suffer from chronic back pain, joint problems and spinal injuries.

Guardian Angels
While helping people daily is its own reward, the tough days stay with medics throughout their careers. Ip recalls responding to a call about an elderly womans heart attack on a female team members first day on the job. When they arrived, the woman was in trouble, so the new medic eagerly began CPR on Ips request. It wasnt enough. After we failed to resuscitate, the eager volunteers demeanor was transformed. She did not speak a word the rest of the day. I checked on her after our shift ended, and she started to cry uncontrollably, saying that the elderly woman was looking into her eyes. Chan has a hard time shaking off the memory of two young children who died under his care more than 30 years ago. They were really young, he recalls. They drowned in a big puddle at a construction site. I did everything I could think of, but I felt responsiblelike I didnt do enough. It took me a long time to accept that there are lives I cannot save.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The St. John ambulance crew

Manning the St. John hotline

Once theyve arrived on the scene, medics have to deal with any number of routine, gruesome or unusual cases, which each require a different approach to be handled properly. Our dayto-day work is a lot more down-to-earth than people think, says Chan. We work with the elderly the most, since they are usually not strong enough to bring themselves to the hospital. These types of calls often involve administering medication the patients already have, or teaching them how to properly use inhalers. Then theres the stuff that would make most of us queasy. The scarier ones are the certified cases, says Chan, where the patient is obviously deadthe head no longer attached to the body, or a big amount of brain fluid leakage. Other scary scenarios are immediate cases like strokes or heart attacks,

The Lamma Ferry Disaster

St John Ambulance assistant superintendents Lai Kai-ming and Tsang Chi-keung were at a wedding on October 1 last year when two ferries collided near Lamma Island. The two received orders to get to the scene immediately, and they braced themselves for chaos. In the end, 39 men, women and children tragically lost their lives; Lai and Tsang share what was like to be on the front line after a disaster. LKM: During disasters or large-scale accidents, our first task is to triage patients into four categories according to their condition. People who have lost all vital signs or are certified dead will be put in the black category. Those with life-threatening injuries are tagged as red, followed by an immediate transfer to hospitals. Yellow, the next category, includes patients with nonlife threatening injuries. Those suffering minor injuries go into the green category. It is a universally-accepted standard. Things were eerily quiet and calm when I got there. The patients with serious injuries were treated by paramedics in a separate pier, so there were only people with minor injuries. They sat still, covered by blankets, and I realized they were waiting in the hopes of seeing a lost family member. Every time a new batch of people arrived on shore, they would scan the crowd eagerly, only to be let down again. They did not want to be helped, insisting emotionally to me that we find their family and that they were physically fine. Having received training in psychological first-aid, I understand that those are normal responses to traumatic events. I needed to present myself as somebody they could trust, so I told them I was a qualified doctor. It had an immediate effectthey believed me and were willing to be checked up.

TCK: I remember a family of four that refused to be separated. They had to be sent to the hospital for check-ups, but when the government ambulance couldnt seat all of them, they screamed and yelled that they could not be apart from each other. They were still in a stage of shock having nearly lost each other. Luckily, one of St John ambulances is larger and was able to fit all of them. They broke into tears of relief and hugged each other. It was very touching. The deep bond between family members and, surprisingly, between strangers was remarkable. Survivors were arriving at the pier, and a man holding a baby walked up. A woman standing behind the gate began crying, saying that it was her daughter. We unlocked the gate and the mother ran to her child, overwhelmed by the emotion of being reunited after the crash.

She thanked the man, who she didnt know. All the paramedics on the scene applauded. LKM: I feel like both heaven and hell were crammed into the day. It was a happy day. I was at a wedding. Its the National Day, and the people were out at sea watching the fireworks. It was a happy family day. The contrast was almost too huge for me to process, seeing people sitting on the ground waiting for their family that were probably dead, while minutes ago they were celebrating. I usually see elderly or individuals on my daily ambulance duties, but this time I saw entire families destroyed. I made a point to spend more time with my loved ones. We know that things can take a turn for the worse at any second.

Celluloid Cops
With such a proud history of world-class crime dramas coming out of Hong Kong, it seemed natural to askare the real cops fans of police movies? In a word, absolutely. I really liked Cold War, constable Ho Chi-him told us, but those movies are just entertainment. Waitso Kowloon cops dont actually shoot up triad tea houses as routinely as they do in John Woo flicks? Not quite, says Ho. In movies, the police pull their guns out way too often, and real police dont fight nearly as much. Thats refreshing news, but it still doesnt take away an ounce of the excitement youll derive from the depiction of our men in blue in these must-see gems.
Hard Boiled Infernal Affairs Police Story

to get the shot right, and did he everthe camera doesnt cut once through two minutes and 40 seconds of consecutive bloodbath.

Infernal Affairs (2002)

Directors Andrew Lau and Alan Mak would go on to make two acclaimed sequels to their seminal crime thriller, but its the first one you really need to see. Its cunningly simple plot involves a police officer and a triad (played by Tony Leung and Andy Lau) who infiltrate each others organizations as moles, and their struggle to maintain cover as both sides come to learn of traitors in their ranks. The film would go on to win Best Film, Director and Screenplay at that years Hong Kong Film Awards. Watch for: Martin Scorseses The Departed, the 2006 Hollywood remake that took the Academy Award for Best Picture, and starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson. Fun fact: the word fuck is said 237 times in the film, which averages to more than 1.5 times a minute. Infernal Affairs, on the other hand, doesnt use fuck once. Because its in Cantonese.
See also: Long Arm of the Law (1984), City On Fire (1987), Beast Cops (1998),or anything directed by Johnnie To most notably, PTU (2003) and Mad Detective (2007).

Police Story (195)

Should you wish to launch an exploration of Jackie Chans contribution to cinema, we recommend starting with the actor/ director/stuntmans personal favoritethe first and finest of his five Police Story films. The cop-chases-crime-lord plot is less important than the ground-breaking action sequences, which include a hillside car chase that destroys an entire shanty-town, Jackie swinging off the roof of a double-decker bus with an umbrella, and a massive shopping mall shoot-out that tests the limits of how many stuntmen can be thrown through plate glass in one sequence. Watch for: Jackies final stunt in the filmin which he jumps off the fourth story of TSTs Wing On Plaza and slides down a pole to the ground level to catch his perpnearly paralyzed him, as he broke two vertebrae, dislocated his pelvis, and burned all the skin off both hands thanks to a string of Christmas lights wrapped around the pole. Manly.

Hard Boiled (1992)

While it had a less profound impact on the filmmaking industry than 1986s A Better Tomorrow or 1989s The Killer, this John Woo cop epic is the directors last feature before leaving for Hollywood, and its breathtaking shoot-outs are still regarded as some of the best ever filmed. The film reunited Woo with star Chow Yun-fat, who plays a police investigator who teams up with an undercover cop (Tony Leung) to take down triad leader Johnny Wong (Anthony Wong). Watch for: One of cinemas most ambitious and stunning long tracking shots, wherein two cops shoot dozens of gangsters through the hallways of a hospital. Woo reportedly had one chance

Triads, tragedies and traitors: the Hong Kong police forces most checkered days are (hopefully) behind them, but that doesnt mean the last decade hasnt come with its own fair share of drama. Here are a few interesting stats and tales from the force from recent years.
Crime and Punishment Not all crimes are created equal. These are the infractions youre statistically likely to get away with, and the ones you definitely wont. 1. Crimes with the lowest detection rate (rate in which the cases were solved) in 2011: burglary from break-in (9.6 percent), theft from vehicles (11.9 percent), theft from construction sites (12.8 percent). 2. Crimes with 100 percent detection rate in 2011: attempted murder, managing vice establishments, manufacturing of dangerous drugs, going equipped for stealing, possession of unlawful instruments, unlawful pawning offences. Police Deities Traditionally, Hong Kongs policemen worship Kwan Tai, a historical Chinese character that symbolizes courage and loyalty. The twist? Triad societies in Hong Kong honor the same god. So when the triads and police fight, whose side is Kwan Tai on? We posed this question to police constable Ha Chi-him, who told us that the younger generation of officers no longer follows these superstitious practices. Civilian Heroics Whats the best way for us regular Joes to help the police? Take a cue from Kwong Ying-nui, Citizen of the Year in 2012, who ran past her bloodyknife-wielding male neighbor to save his three-year-old daughter in an apartment where a violent attack had just taken place. If that sounds too extreme, police say its more than enough if we report crimes and are ready to stand as witnesses. Fallen Officers On June 15 2011, station sergeant Lau Chi-kin fell to his death from the roof of a Central pedestrian footbridge while trying to reach a protester on an adjacent footbridge during a farmers protest. The death of an onduty police officer is rare in Hong Kong: the force suffered zero casualties between 2007 and 2010.

Rogue Cop
On March 17 2006, police constable Tsang Kwok-hang was patrolling with fellow officer Sin Ka-keung when they ran into off-duty police constable Tsui Po-ko, who was wearing a wig and looking suspicious. When Sin moved to interrogate Tsui, a gun was pulled and the two on-duty officers were shot in the face. Tsang, who was wounded in the throat, managed to kill Tsui by shooting him five times in the torso. The police identified that Tsuis gun belonged to a police officer who died in the line of duty back in 2001. The jury later concluded that Tsui shot the guns former owner and then used it to murder a Pakistani security guard during a bank robbery in 2001.

DINING

Thats How we Roll

Got an Inagiku appetite but a Genki budget? Join the club. Catherine Ren and Jee Hee Lim scour the city for the best value sushi Hong Kong has to offer.

where exactly can you go for good, cheap sushi in Hong Kong without having to venture to far-flung outposts in the New Territories? Its one of the most common food questions posed by HK Magazines foodie readers. The good news is that there are more than a couple of reasonable but good quality sashimi bars right in the heart of the city where you can feast on fish to your hearts content without burning a hole in your wallet.

Casual Bites

A Tour of Japan

Sushi Hiro serves some marvelously fresh sashimi and meticulously prepared dishes from different Japanese regions, including Fukuoka, Matsuyama, Osaka, Tsukiji, Sendai and Hokkaido. The resto uses less sticky and highly absorbent Japanese rice to make its sushi. Try the delectable prawn sashimi ($250 for three pieces). The Chirashi sushi set, which comes with various pieces of assorted sashimi with rice, sets you back $390. Not the cheapest in town, but you definitely get bang for your buck here. 10/F, Henry House, 42 Yun Ping Rd., Causeway Bay, 2882-8752.

Among the superabundance of Japanese restaurants in the Wan Chai district, Ba Sushi appeals to its customers with its quality dishes offered at great prices. It specializes in aburi sushi (grilled sushi) menus and fusion-style sushi rolls. The seared salmon sushi ($30) and fried soft-shell crab roll ($49) are two recommended dishes. Shops 1-5, G/F, King Dao Building, 14 Burrows St., Wan Chai, 2893-2282.

New Kid on the Block

Mizuki is a newly opened restaurant that offers traditional Japanese dishes as well as its own inventions, like the Mizuki special roll at $180 (for six pieces). Its kinda like a California roll but with extra scallops and salmon roe. All the raw goods are shipped from Japan and hand-picked by staff. Get the Super Deluxe assorted sashimi platter for $1,200, which comfortably feeds three to five and includes seven kinds of fish; or the humbler Deluxe Assorted sashimi platter for $680, which comes wtih tuna belly and shrimp. Shop A, G/F, Bo Fung Mansion, 9-11 St. Francis St., Wan Chai, 2411-0499.

Rock-Bottom Rolls

Try Monster Sushis innovative signature Edo-style sushi; handrolls and sushi start from just under $20 a piece. Also try the organic seaweed salad sashimi ($36)but if you want to stick with the classics, go for the salmon, sweet shrimp and striped jack sushi instead. Shop 302, 3/F, iSquare, 63 Nathan Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2111-1116.

Chef s Table

A Long Game

Rokkaku, a tiny restaurant in a corner of Wan Chais Star Street, offers a top-notch, authentic Japanese sushi experience at reasonable prices. Chef Wongs meticulously prepared seasonal omakase set costs only $420 and his assorted sushi platter of snapper, salmon, crab roe and tuna retails at $260. Remember to book in advance since its a full house almost every night. Top tip: become a regular at this intimate and private kitchen, and youll get access to chef Wongs premium off-the-menu sakes. G/F, 6 Kwong Ming St., Wan Chai, 2866-8166. Come to Hatsu Japanese Restaurant restaurant for some quality sushi at relatively affordable prices (at least for the area). Lunch sets ($180-220) include unlimited salad, a bowl of sashimi rice, steamed egg, and a choice of either soba noodles or udon. Try also Hatsus assorted sushi sets, which come with six to 10 pieces of sushi and a hand roll for $250 and up. Shop G4, G/F, Bank of America Tower, 12 Harcourt Rd., Admiralty, 2971-0002.

Out to Lunch

Make like a businessman and get a good value sushi fix with one of these excellent lunch sets.
Flying in fresh, in-season produce daily from Kyushu and Hokkaido, Sushi Dokoro Hikari is a cozy, homey spot for a laid-back but filling lung. It currently offers five seasonal lunch treats, including the Choose Yourself sashimi on rice set ($190). Some of the choices include sea urchin, kinmedai fish and mackerel. Udon or miso soup is also served with the set. G/F, 4 Lau Li St., Tin Hau, 2566-3801.

Try the longest sushi in Hong Kong at Kam Tin Long, where pieces of raw fish stretch to precisely 8.8 inches. Regular sushi costs $40 per piece, while salmon belly is more of an indulgence at $78.8 per piece (yes, we have noticed this restos obsession with auspicious numbers). Regular salmon is the best deal, at $82 for one chop cut into eight pieces. Shop 1, 1/F, Landwide Commercial Building, 118-120 Austin Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2730-3678.

Open earlier this year, the spacious Igawa is a welcome addition to K-Towns burgeoning dining scene. A set dinner for two ($498) includes an edamame starter, crab roe salad, a sashimi platter of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, sweet shrimp, scallop, and tuna belly with spring onion in a rolland thats not all. NEW AND NOTED

RESTAURANT REVIEWS
Il Milione
Italian. Shop 16-21, G/F Hutchison House, 10 Harcourt Rd., Admiralty, 2481-1120. A restaurant serving dishes from landlocked Umbria in Central Italy doesnt sound like the perfect CV for a fancy fine dine, but Il Milione bucks the trend and paves the path for creative Italian dishes that havent necessarily yet made contact with the discerning Hong Kong palate. With an orange-hued room created by the dizzyingly fascinating oval-shaped light fixtures hanging from the ceiling, Il Milione is both an intimate hangout and a sophisticated venue where one goes to see-and-be-seen. The service was warm and embracing, with a zealous server making sharp recommendations and guiding our experience from start to finish. He shook his head disapprovingly when we said we wanted to share our appetizers, but still gracefully set us up with small plates and even a snack from the bar (we were desperate to try the mozzarella sticks). Theres also a tasting menu for $990 per head, but we ordered a la carte instead. Starters first: the burrata with turnip salad, pan-fried roots and wild mints tasted as interesting as it sounds; the mild and milky burrata was definitely the highlight. Both the chewy grilled cuttlefish and the caramelized foie gras were damn delicioso, with the latter practically melting on contact. The pasta primis were just as fetchingthe breadcrumb-coated passatelli in a lobster broth was a soupy, multi-textured dish that weve never had in Hong Kong. While it did take getting used to, the rich, warm broth and the doughy noodle bits slowly won us over. Meanwhile, the Sicilian red prawn spaghetti had every single strand soaked thoroughly with savory, fishy essence. Those who skipped the carbs went straight to the secondi, and were equally impressed. The hearty lamb chops in pistachio were cooked just right for one exacting dinner guest who didnt want their meat too raw or too cooked. Meanwhile, the Mediterranean seared sea bass was a meaty and smartly seasoned piece, complete with light and crispy skin. Add to that our sweet and substantial cannoli and tiramisu desserts and generous platter of petits fours, an amuse-bouche presented by the chef, a carefully timed palate cleanser just after our mainsits only a matter of time before the Michelin man knocks on the door. Open Mon-Sat noon-midnight. $$$$

Watch Out For

Two places that arent open yet, but will soon be making a splash (and theyre both Southeast Asian! Woohoo!): Im soooo looking forward to a new lunch spot around our office: Chachawan Isaan Thai and Bar (206 Hollywood Rd., Sheung Wan) by busy bee Yenn Wong (whos also behind 208 Duecento Otto and Jason Athertons 22 Ships). The chef heading it up will be Adam Cliff, whos worked for Nahm in Bangkok and London and also Bo.lan in Bangkok (a personal fave). Chef Cliff will be using both the grills and stoves to deliver tangy-savory goods from the Isaan of northeast Thailand. Green papaya salad, salt-crusted seabass, grilled tiger prawns and coconut curries will all be offer, mainly small-plate-style. Chom Chom by Peter Cuong Franklin (the Vietnamese noodle bar that used to be on Wellington, then Elgin) has closed and will undergo a concept change before popping up again on Peel Street in SoHo. Beer and Vietnamese street food will be the two key elements at this new space, which will be a collabo project with Black Sheep Restaurant group (who also own Boqueria and Motorino). Im still trying to recover from the sugar rush induced by a whopping jar of icing and cake sent to our office courtesy of Sweet Soirees (www.sweetsoireeshk.com), an event planning agency that provides everything from bespoke catering and bar services to custom-made cakes. The idea is, you tell the SS peeps what youd like to see/ eat, and they make everything magically happenwrapped in ribbons and decked in lace no less. Next time youre planning an all-out party or corporate event, be sure to check it out. Jean-Paul Hevin (13 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, 2851-0633) turns five in Hong Kong, which means we get to indulge in specialedition chocolates and macarons. The brands released a Voyage du Cacao chocolate collection that features deliciously addictive pieces

made from bitter chocolate ganache. JPH has gone to Brazil, Madagascar and the Carribbean islands to source the cocoa beans went into this limited edition. A 16-piece box retails for $380, available while stocks last. Theres also a five-piece Best of Paris macaron set for $150. Catalunya (G/F, Guardian House, 32 Oi Kwan Rd., Wan Chai, 2866-7900) is now offering Sunday brunch, complete with a charcuterie station, a baked goods section, a cheese bar, a raw bar and a salad station. Im stuffed just writing this. Catalonian dishes such as chorizo omelets, roasted suckling pig and giant paellas will also be available, not to mention churros with hot chocolate for dessert. Brunch starts at noon and ends at 4pm, and costs $590 plus service per head.

Favorite Thai

Thai. G/F, Shop J, Kimberley Mansion,15 Austin Avenue, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2367-4388. Located awkwardly between Jordan and Tsim Sha Tsui MTR stations, it takes a bit of walking and google-mapping to get to the slightly run-down Thai shop opened by a husband and wife duo 11 years ago. While new and fancy Korean restaurants are taking over the street, Favorite Thai takes pride in its homey set up: tables a little too close to each other, chatty owners taking orders, and a television installed on the side of the wall playing TVB dramas. We ordered mostly from the options listed under Chefs Recommendation, which seemed more reliable than the point-and-shoot photos on the menu that made every dish look greasy. Our Thai jelly drink tasted of proper coconut juice. The ark clam (an East Asian bivalve) salad was made by soaking raw ark clams in a special homemade sauce. You have to use your hands to pry open the shells, but its worth it for the fresh and juicy meat inside. We also loved the classic raw prawns dish for its tongueburning spicy sauce that keeps you craving for more. Good seafood tom yum soups are hard to come by they either taste too strong or too sweetbut the tom yum goong at FT offers a balanced taste of spice, coconut paste and seafood. You get your moneys worth too: countless shrimps, clams and squid sit inside the lovely broth. The prawn curry was rich and perfect with the crispy garlic bread, although the prawns were a little bit mushy. Before we left, the owners reminded us to order their signature grilled fish next time round note taken. Wed happily bring more friends back to this intimate little Thai place. Open daily noon-3am. $$

Talk of the Town

Chef-slash-busyentrepreneur Jason Black from Shore has a new cookbook out: its called Cow Pig Chicken, and pretty selfexplanatory. If youre a carnivore looking for 50 different ways to be creative with your meats, this might just be what youre missing. (Sold for $328 at major bookstores.) Ironically, Jason has had to become vegetarian for a month after losing a side bet at the first annual Eat Your Words (look up my old column) two weeks ago. The amazingly talented pastry chef Gregoire Michaud and food blogger Ale Wilkinson took home the gold with their delightful goats yogurt ice cream dessert singlehandedly beating all four courses that came before it, including Jason and Is rockin summer barbecue. (We came second, if thats any consolation.) I wonder how hes holding up! Thought Id take this space to also give a shoutout to Chicha chef Arturo Melendezanother brave participant from Eat Your Wordswho helped push his resto straight to the top of the world charts. Chicha was recently ranked one of the best five Peruvian restaurants in the WORLD by Perus national paper, El Comercio. The full list includes Lima in London, Taypa in Brazil, Picca in LA and Tanta in Barcelona.

Sushi O
Japanese. 46 Bridges St., Sheung Wan, 2480-0009.

Oh Sushi O, how we wish we could eat your delicious seared beef strips every day. But, alas, the $280 price tag and the tiny portion just isnt quite worth it. Its a shame that Castelo Conceptswhich also owns Oolaa and Jaspashas made its sole Asian venture the overpriced one when its other outlets are pretty reasonable. The sleek black sushi bar always appears to be quite full at night, which could have something to do with it being neighbors with Yardbird and Oolaabut we thought wed give it a try on a particularly sunny afternoon. Its quasi-alfresco feel and relaxed atmosphere was a huge plus and actually made the chilled sushi seem even more tempting. We started with a few pieces of standard sushi orders: salmon, tuna and tuna belly. The fish-to-rice ratio was perfect and it was all extremely fresh. We kicked ourselves for not noticing the chefs special eel pie maki, which consists of conger eel and mango salsaespecially given that our tataki tuna (seared tuna slices with cherry tomatoes, baby coriander and chili yuzu) was a bit sloppy. There was nothing wrong with the taste, but it could have done with a bit of crunch to counter the mushy ingredients. Still feeling a bit hungry, we went big with an order of chicken karaagegently fried chicken strips. These bad boys were juicy, tender and the fried skin was still crispy and light. We just wish the portions were a bit bigger. Open daily noon-3pm, 6-10pm. $$$

A Matter of Choice

Where better a place than Exchange Square to hold an art exhibition dedicated to the suits that strut around Central? Local artist Kevin Fung has teamed up with Hongkong Land to display eight new sculptures, each of them placing miniature, faceless suit-andtied characters in various perplexing scenarios involving wooden mountains, bronze webs and stone islands. Fungs early career choice was engineer, before studying woodwork with renowned sculptor Tong King-sum and committing to art full-time. His training is on full display with these eye-catching, simple metaphors for workbankin aint easy, yo. Jul 8-28. The Rotunda, G/F, One Exchange Square, 8 Connaught Place, Central.

Classical
Champions in Concert
The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra likes a winner. Who doesnt? In this one-night-only performance, four major award-winning musical acts will take the stage together for the first time, in what promises to be a memorable night for classical lovers. Check this ace roster: Sun Huang, first prize winner of 12 national erhu competitions in China will be playing, as will Su Chang, winner of three major zheng competitions in China; holding the baton will be Sun Peng, winner of the worlds first Hong Kong International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music in 2011. Not to be outdone, World Harmonica Festival winners the Kings Harmonica Quintet will play a piece by Esesco. Winning. Jul 13, 8pm. Concert Hall, Cultural Centre, 10 Salisbury Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui. $150-300 from www.urbtix.hk.

Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy

Nerds rejoice! If you happened to spend your formative years locked away from the physical world and in the throes of Japanese fantasy RPGs, then the Asia-World Expo is (finally) hosting an event for you. Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu will be joined on-stage by the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong and the Die Konzertisten Choir to bring over two hours of music from the series massive catologue to life. The only thing you wont get is your childhood back. Jul 27-28, 7:30pm. AsiaWorld-Expo, Chek Lap Kok. $680-1,680 from www.hkticketing.com.

Theater
18/F Flat C
18/F Flat C is the longest-running radio drama in the Chinese speaking world, first broadcasted 45 years ago on Commercial Radio Hong Kong as a satirical take on local society. The show remains popular today, so its creators have teamed up with HK Repertory Theatre to bring it to the stage for the first time. Lets just say that the response has been positiveextra shows have already been added three times due to extraordinary ticket requests. Could it have something to do with the fact that the leads are Anthony Wong and Louisa So (pictured), portraying a couple that runs a local coffee shop? Id grab those tickets fast. Jul 6-7, 9-11, 13-14, 7:45pm. Theatre, City Hall, 5 Edinburgh Place, Central. $280-480 from www.urbtix.hk.

Swan Lake
When the Hong Kong Ballet presented Swan Lake in 2011, performances sold out so quickly that the Company resorted to selling standing tickets for the first time in their history, just to meet demand. Is it any surprise that a two-week run of the beloved classic was selected to open the 2013-14 season? The tragic love story pits Odette the innocent White Swan against Odile, the malevolent Black Swan who looks so similar to her lighter counterpart that Odettes beau is fooled into falling for the wrong girl. I have no clue how it ends, but I certainly hope that Natalie Portman makes out with Mila Kunis. You knowas Tchaikovsky originally intended. Aug 23-25, 30-1, 7:30pm; Aug 24-25, 31-1, 2:30pm. Grand Theatre, Cultural Centre, 10 Salisbury Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui. $140-1,500 from www.urbtix.hk.

Dance

Beethoven Piano Concertos: John Lill Plays No 1 & Triple

Few would argue that John Lill is one of the greatest living British pianists, so thats reason enough to get excited for his Hong Kong performance. Lill is a recipient of the Order of the British Empire and is best known for his aristocratic interpretations of Beethhoven, which is exactly what hell be performing alongside concertmaster James Cuddleford and celloist Wendy Law (pictured). Yet another solid line-up for classical fans from the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Jul 18, 8pm. Concert Hall, City Hall, 5 Edinburgh Place, Central. $140-320 from www.urbtix.hk.

Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour by Cirque du Soleil

Immortal or not, dont doubt the continued prominence of the King of Pop. Consider: The Beatles had been belly-up for 26 years before the world-class Canadian circus staple Cirque du Soliel brought their music to life on-stage, but MJs been gone for only four. This massive stage show features 30 of his classic hits set to mesmerizing video projections from Jacksons stage performances and choreography that should impress even the smoothest of moonwalkers. Ill bring the monkey, you bring the white glovethis ones for the fans. Will You Be There? Aug 23, 8pm; Aug 24, 4pm, 8pm; Aug 25, 4pm, 8pm. AsiaWorld-Expo, Chek Lap Kok. $245-1,288 from www.hkticketing.com.

Comedy
Live Stand-Up at TakeOut Comedy
Did you hear the one about the clich-loving magazine writer who isnt creative enough to come up with a better way to introduce a comedy event? Of course you did. Asias only full-time comedy club hosts three nights of live English stand-up, featuring Nick Milnes, Ryan Hynek, Pete Grella, Mahesh Mansigani, Garron Chiu, Tamby Chan, Sam Moorhouse, Mary Ho, HK Mags own Sean Hebert, and many more. Thursdays are discounted to $50 for students, and as always, the audience can bring their own beverages into the club. I recommend alcohol. Its funnier that way. Jul 11-13, 9pm. TakeOut Comedy, B/F, 34 Elgin St., Central, 6220-4436. $50-150; reserve tickets at www.takeoutcomedy.com or buy at the door.

Le Crazy Horse Paris: Forever Crazy

Im slightly embarassed to admit that the first time I was told that Crazy Horse was coming to town, I heard Crazy Whores instead. No worriesregardless of the reason you buy a ticket, youre in for a heck of a night. The legendary dancers put on a breathtaking, groundbreaking stage show that is much more Cirque du Soliel than it is burlesque. Fun fact: did you know that until the disease outbreak, the group was called Mad Cow? Another fun fact: did you know that I totally made up that last fact? Sep 11, 8pm; Sep 12-19, 10:15pm, 7:45pm. Lyric Theatre, Academy for Performing Arts, 1 Gloucester Rd., Wan Chai, 2584-8500. $690-1,290 from www.hkticketing.com.

Alpha to Infinity-Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Graduation Exhibition 2013

The Hong Kong Art School and RMIT University jointly present a collection of artworks created by 50 graduates who majored in painting, ceramics, photography and sculpture. While Alpha to Infinity supposedly represents the growth these students experienced from metaphorical seedlings into lush forests of trees (which arent infinite, as far as I know), lets forget that mumbo-jumbothese are Hong Kongs future stars of the art world, and this is a chance to support them and check out their awesome work. A few to watch for: Vanessa Wongs internal organs (pictured), Li Chung-toos The Warriors and Christy Chows What Are You Expecting? series. Through Jul 28. Pao Galleries, 4/F & 5/F, Arts Centre, 2 Harbour Rd., Wan Chai, 2582-0200.

Simple People
Based in Hong Kong, Rex Koo has made a name for himself over the last decade as a pretty bad-ass graphic designer, creating loads of album covers, movie posters, and even splashing his work on Nike products in 2012. While his work with paint aint too shabby either, this exhibition displays the end result of a personal challenge Koo gave to himselfcould he make minimalist portraits using grids, the most common element in graphic design? Choosing what to retain and what to abandon, the resultant works are funky, fun, and should be boxed and sold as a guess-the-celebrity game. Id call it Who Dat? Patent pending. Through Jul 17. Haji Gallery, G/F, 12-14 Lok Ku Rd., Sheung Wan, 2891-1164.

The Devil Inside

Sri Lankan painter Kosala Gunasinghe, aka Kos Cos, is making his Hong Kong debut with this exhibition. Its a shame its taken him this long to put on a show here; hes one of the coolest artists working in town. Based in the city since 1999, Kos uses cheap brushes and colorful oils to create loud, memorable pieces which catch the eye both in aesthetic and theme. Im a big fan of previous series wherein he depicted Mao as (variously) Elvis, Steve Jobs, The Pope and Hitler, and when he creatively reimagined traditional Asian art featuring highly sexualized characters. The Devil Inside focuses on fallen angels; celebrities who fall victim to their inner demons, and have their reputations transformed. Do you see yourself in their eyes, or is it just Arnold Schwarzenegger? Through Jul 27. PubArt Gallery, G/F, 7B Chancery Lane, Central, 2840-1809.

Summer Show
The annual summer exhibition at Amy Jos Co (thats what her friends call her, anyways) pulls pieces from the gallerys line-up of acclaimed artists. On display this time around are new photographs by Chinese artist Liu Xiaofang, new works from the 365 series by Konstantin Bessmertny, selected paintings by funky Australian landscape artist Chris Langlois, new resin, acrylic and gold chrome sculptures by Korean artist Hyojin Park, and more. One artist is spotlighted each week and the works will be rotated regularly through September, so pop in the next time youre strolling down Hollywood. Through Sep 7. Amelia Johnson Contemporary, G/F, 6-10 Shin Hing St., Central, 2548-2286.

PHASE 3 announcement aug 1

Site/Cambodia
If youve spent any time in Cambodia, you understand that the country is characterized by its contrasts: the staggering historical beauty of Khmer Empire architecture, and the unimaginable horrors of the Khmer Rouge; the quiet calm and kindness of the Cambodian people, and the frenetic pace at which the country develops and embraces a globalized economy. Khmer art has much to communicate to the world about these changes, and the different techniques and formats that Mao Soviet, Anida Yoeu Ali, Sera, Kim Hak, and Srey Bandaul inject into their inspired work make this exhibition one to see. Through Jul 17. Karin Weber Gallery, G/F, 20 Aberdeen St., Central, 2544-5004.

Jake & Dinos Chapman: The Sum of all Evil

The Chapman brothers are pretty fucked up. Theyre vulgar, offensive, blasphemous, and have been consistently creating some of the most interesting art to come out of Britain in the last two decades. Seriously, just type their names into Google and see how quickly Hitler pops up beside it. This exhibition is their first in Hong Kong, and it features their biggest and most evil diorama yet, with Nazi soldiers and McDonalds characters (hating on the Golden Arches is a common theme) committing abhorrent acts in an apocalyptic wasteland. The show also features improved paintings with religious themes, which should piss off absolutely no one. See you at White Cube and fuck you, Hamburglar. Through Aug 31. The buzz: A brand new nightclub located where short-lived Mella used to stand, 7Heaven is literally right in the middle of Lan Kwai Fong. Its the latest venture under Plume Group, which also operates Bar Six and Cvche, the brand new oyster bar. Like many other LKF joints, its a spacious nightclub, but not so ridiculously big that youll lose all your friends the moment you walk in. The dcor: While 7Heaven has retained some of Mellas features in its dcor, it has also undergone a design overhaul on its dance floor. Stepping into the club, you will find plenty of leather seating in

front of you and a large bar to your right, while a VIP seating area is all sunken seating. If it all starts to get a bit too much (or youve downed a shot too many), the unisex bathroom has ample space and plenty of leather seats to provide an escape from the crowds on the dance floor. The drinks: The drink list at 7Heaven is everything youd expect from a nightclub: bubbles of all kinds, ranging from classic champagne cocktails to baller-sized bottles of Moet and Veuve. The club also boasts a list of signature cocktailsperfect drinks to kick off

a long evening ahead. Try the eponymous 7Heaven, which consists of fresh strawberries, basil and orange bitters topped off with Prosecco and Grey Goose. Otherwise, check out the Strawberry Shaga sugary creation that is made with fresh basil, lemon juice, a dash of strawberry syrup and a splash of soda along with Grey Goose vodka. In need of something a bit more macho? Have a BLT Old Fashion. Its made with bacon vodka (yep), maple syrup, Angostura bitters, and garnished with orange twists. Why youll be back: Aside from hitting the dance floors at 7Heaven to shake your stuff, youll also want to visit on weeknights for a relaxing cocktail or two on the sunken sofas. Takeaways from the Conference

Just finished a conference. Heres what I learned. Presentations never go off without a technical problem. Theres a rumor that one went smoothly at a conference in Macau in 2003, but this may be an urban legend. Speakers will start with either a joke or a self-effacing comment. These comments will not be funny. Everybody will laugh inexplicably. If somebody begins his or her speech with Im going to keep this short, be prepared for two hours of this shit. Participants prefer the handshake to the high-five or the hug. The full body hug is also frowned upon for being a little too gropey. In the hallway, there will always be two silver tins labeled coffee and decaf. If you switch the signs, guests will have literally no idea. If you switch the coffee and tea signs, stupid guests will have no idea. If you spike the coffee with whisky, guests will complain, but their complaints will be slurred. The only time anything will get done will be in a small group breakout session, and even then it will be by accident. Conference Room C is always in a different wing of the hotel than you originally thought. Conference Room B will be a room in Hogwarts that teleports depending on the time of day and where the tides are. When the speaker asks for questions, there will be a long period of silence after which the speaker will again ask for questions. Then some dickhead will ask a very esoteric question and the rest of the room will sigh audibly. If somebody says lets take this offline, the person secretly wishes that you would die. The breakfast spread will be mostly semi-fresh fruit. The plate will be very small and for every blueberry you eat, youll end up dropping three to four on the ground. If you slip out of the conference in the middle of a speech, the door will be 80 percent squeakier when you open it than usual. At least one conference attendee will make small talk with you in the bathroom. If it gets to be too much, just say, Hey man, you got any coke? and he or she will ignore you for the rest of the conference. If the conference has more than a hundred attendees and you talk smack about one of them, that person will always be right behind you, even if two seconds ago they were across the hall in front. There are only two temperatures for conference rooms: below zero or hot enough to fry an egg on the rug. The winner of the conference will be whoever can use the most jargon, hopefully with corresponding PowerPoint presentations. The loser of the conference will be the guy or girl who gets too drunk at the dinner on the first night and is then labeled drunk dude for the rest of the event. Forty percent of people at the conference will be typing on their laptops, ignoring everything else. The other 60 percent will be either texting or dead. After a speech, the restroom line will get super long, like a 15-minute wait, but if you walk for two minutes there will be a completely empty bathroom. Looking people in the eye and saying, gee, this is a really fun conference, may be a winning strategy. Telling a girl that youd like her to go back to your hotel room but to keep the badge on will be an unsuccessful strategy.

Man of Steel

PPPPP

(USA) Action/Drama. Directed by Zach Snyder. Starring Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon. Category IIA. 143 minutes. Opened Jun 27.

This isnt the Superman were used to seeing. Gone are the phone booths, red undies, and the characters unable to recognize Clarks true identity because he wears glasses. Man of Steel is Americas greatest hero given the Christopher Nolan treatment, courtesy of director Zach Snyder (300, Watchmen) in his most prototypically more-is-more manner. Its ambitious, stunningly crafted, and completely, almost exhaustively, devoid of fun. The film begins on a near-destroyed Krypton, where Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and his wife frantically launch their newborn son Kal-Elthe planets first natural birth in centuriestowards Earth, with the genocidal General Zod (Michael Shannon) pledging pursuit. Cut to Kal as the adult Clark Kent (Henry Cavill), a loner and drifter who has a knack for finding himself nearby explosions and disasters. As the conflicted Clark searches for answers in the Canadian arctic about why he was sent to Earth, hes pursued by Lois Lane (Amy Adams), a plucky journalist intent on discovering the identity of her mystery hero. He just wants to live in obscurity, but thats when Zod finally tracks down his fellow Kryptonian, meaning the newly caped Superman must choose between saving either the last traces of his destroyed race, or the inhabitants of his adopted home. Its a finely executed, frantically-paced film thatll please fans of mayhem and fisticuffs, but to explain its weaknesses I am required to reflect on a fundamental cinematic dilemma I see with Supermans origin story. Superhero flicks work well because they revolve around the protagonists central moral struggle, which is often relatable and humandoes Peter Parker love Mary-Jane fully, or does he abandon her because the burden of his powers requires the sacrifice of everyday pleasures? Do the X-men save those who label them freaks? These dilemmas bring the heroes closer to us because we imagine how difficult it would be for us to make the same concessions. Superman, on the other hand, is Jesus. We dont need Snyders repeated shots of Cavill flying or floating, arms outstretched and feet together in the shape of a crucifix, to remind us of this. He enters our world as a child of unnatural birth to be our savior, but he doesnt descend upon us as a hero like Thor but as a boy Christ, to be raised among the men he will come to lead as a God. Its a 75-year-old story taken quite seriously on the pages of comic books, though it has benefitted on-screen from a lighter touch in its past tellings. From Richard Donners 1978 film Superman to TVs Lois and Clark, humor and romance are used to allow us to connect with Superman. He cant just be goodwe must like him, too. And so Clark Kent bumbles as he flirts and tries to hold down a job because these are recognizably human situations, and we can relate to him and root for him as one of our own. Man of Steel, though, dials up the serious. Snyder and his equally heavy-handed screenwriter David S. Goyer use neither a lighter nor a fine touch in their epic, preferring a sledgehammer over a chisel to etch the tale into our consciousness. This, at times, is a bit much. The scenes on Krypton border on silliness as Jor-El waxes unironically about morality and destiny like Obi Wan Kenobi, while the humans watch their interplanetary invasion with a detached, robotic cool, more interested in explaining their imminent destruction to the audience than emoting about it. By the time we reach the films loud, impressively CGId final 45 minutes, you may be left feeling equally as detached about the outcome. The films strongest scenes take place in flashback, as the teenaged Clark shares his doubts and frustrations with the impeccably cast Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, both turning in winning performances here as the simple, noble Kents. While you cant find fault here in the outings from the very capable Crowe, Adams or Shannon, Snyder doesnt give them enough backstory to allow for real emotional depth, meaning that the films heart rests on Cavills broad shoulders. Beyond looking great in the suit, hes at his best when Clark stops brooding and howling long enough to wink at the crowd, as is the case after hes challenged to a fight in a bar or when he (briefly) allows himself to be handcuffed. For those brief moments, we connect. Were in on the joke. Lets just hope they dish out a few more of those the next time around. Sean Hebert

FILM

Blind Detective

PPPPP

(Hong Kong) Romantic Dramedy/Thriller. Directed by Johnnie To. Starring Andy Lau, Sammi Cheng, Tao Guo, Gao Yuanyuan. Category IIB. 130 minutes. Opened Jul 4.

Available in G.O.D. and the HK Magazine Online Store.

Creating a decent screwball comedy is no easy task, and if its done wrong, your audience will be rolling their eyes in disbelief orlike in the cinema where I watched Blind Detective yawning and snoozing away. Adding in elements of crime drama, action, thriller and rom-com doesnt help to make things more exciting for Blind Detectiveit just becomes a confused mash-up that relies too heavily on the charisma of its leading lovers to carry the story. This is director Johnnie Tos fourth collaboration with Hong Kong superstars Andy Lau (A Simple Life, Infernal Affairs) and Sammi Cheng (Romancing in Thin Air, Fighting for Love), and while the big-names attached to the flick should translate to an instant summer hit, scriptwriter Wai Kafais melting pot of a storyline will leave audiences confused about what type of movie they just watchedthat is, if they manage to stay awake. Lau stars as Johnston, the titular Blind Detective. A brilliant ex-cop who lost his sight years before, he now makes a living by collecting the bounty on unsolved crimes. At the end of one of his cases, he meets and eventually teams up with enthusiastic rookie lady cop, Tung (Cheng). Lured by the promise of expensive gourmet treats (one detective is an avid foodie and the other is very wealthy), Johnston takes Tung under his wing and the two attempt to solve a string of murder and missing person cases. While on the job, Johnston teaches Tung all he knows about solving crimes and trains her to become a super cop. By bringing the stale crime scene to life by (over)acting out the events leading up to the murders and disappearances, they hope to solve the disappearance cases, help Tung forward her career and find out what happen to Minnie, her long-lost friend. After this solid setup, the story takes a strange turn when the pair realizes that theyve uncovered evidence leading them to a deranged serial killer. After the comedy of the first two acts, which see the cops going through costume changes, Blind Detective just stopped being funny. At times, it was offensively sexist, and the jarring mood changes and unnecessary subplots made it hard to sit through. For instance, theres a scene in which Tung allows her mentor to repeatedly punch her in the face as they reenact the events leading up to one of the lovesick ladys disappearance. And thats meant to be one of the funny scenes. If it wasnt for Sammi Cheng there wouldnt be a reason to watch this poorly executed comedy. All of the laughs were thanks to her physicality and the banter between the appealing double-act. Even after almost a decade apart, Lau and Cheng are clearly still a great match for each other but Tos mistake was allowing them to go over-the-top with their performances. Laus detective Johnston was rather unlikeable while Cheng was too much of whiney pushover. So yeah. Blind Detective was intermittently amusing and entertaining when it stuck to the main storyline and focused on the two leads, but the contrast between the comedy and the dark, murderous drama was just too jarring. If he pared down the plot and kept it simple, To could have had a blockbuster on his hands, but in this cut, The Blind Detective is unsolvable. Katie Kenny

His latest film is a two-hour, vaguely philosophical, visually stunning movie trailer that explores love in all its forms (thats as specific as a Malick plot synopsis needs to be), and it stars Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem, people twirling or brooding in fields, Rachel McAdams, voice-overs, Olga Kurylenko, and Oklahoma. Searching For Sugar Man

(Sweden/UK) Sometimes truth is far stranger than fiction, and case in point is this inspiring tale of a bootleg album, a longforgotten musician, a rumored on-stage suicideand unexpected stardom on the other side of the globe. Winner of this years Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, dont miss this rare opportunity to see Rodriguezs inspiring story on the big screen. PPPP BC.

Limited Release
The Act of Killing
(Norway/UK/Denmark) Joshua Oppenheimer directs this powerful, unprecedented documentary about the brutal death squad executioners who killed nearly a million of their own countrymen during Indonesias 1965 military coup. The men are celebrated as heroes today, and the film follows their efforts to recreate their mass slaughter on-camera, in the style of American gangster movies. Its a chilling portrait inside the minds of those capable of unimaginable evil, and shouldnt be missed. PPPPP
Free daily showings of The Act of Killing take place until July 17 at 10:00, 12:45 and 15:30 at Osage Kwun Tong, 5/F, Kian Dai Industrial Building, 73-75 Hung To Rd., Kwun Tong, 2793 4817.

Switch
(China) Judging by the fact that Andy Laus spy thriller is hitting theaters a year late due to censorship concerns, perhaps we understand why so few mainland filmmakers dare to explore the tricky subject of espionage. World War Z
(USA) United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) is forced to leave his family and hop around the globe to help stop a global pandemic that is seeing the agile undead topple governments. More action and thriller than horror, this one is entertaining, exciting, and a fresh take on the oftrevived zombie epic. PPP BC, AMC, UA, GH, MCL, GC.

Epic
(USA) In this latest animated kids fare from Blue Sky Studios, M.K. (Amanda Seyfried) is a teenage girl who gets magically miniaturized to the size of Leafmen, tiny soldiers in the woods who are waging an ongoing war against the evil Boggan leader Mandrake (Christoph Waltz). Its visually stunning in 3D, and the goofy slapstick from a couple of slugs (Chris ODowd and Aziz Ansari) steals the picture. PPP BC, AMC, UA, GH, MCL, GC.

Bekas
(Sweden/Finland/Iraq) Armed with only navet and a donkey, two young Kurdish orphans dream of visiting America, so they set out across a bygone era Iraq still held under the harsh rule of Saddam Hussein. Bolstered by strong performances, writer/ director Karzan Kader uses his own childhood escape from Iraq as inspiration, and the result is a sentimental, uplifting little crowd-pleaser. BC.

First Person
Having stepped down as a permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal last year, the semi-retired Kemal Bokhary recently released his new book, Recollections. He talks to Andrea Lo about how he came to be a High Court judge and his thoughts on Hong Kongs political landscape.
There is one change which I think would have occurred with or without transfer of sovereignty, and that is greater assertiveness on the part of the people as to what they can [ask] of the government.

People in Hong Kong are much more caring than they give themselves credit for.

There was a time when people felt that they would just be self-reliant in whatever circumstances resulted from government action. They were very patient about that, because they hoped for better lives for their children. But now people feel that they ought to expect more from and of government, and that is reasonable.

When you are young, you think of all sorts of things to do when you grow up, and youre not sure. There did come a time when I was in my early teens when I was attracted to law. But that was a time when the bench in Hong Kong was staffed by, in effect, colonial legal servants. So local people didnt go on the bench except perhaps on the level of the magistrates. So even after I began to think of going into law, it never occurred to me that Id be on the benchbecause it wasnt the system in those days. I became a judge one year after I first sat as a deputy judge. The [former] Chief Justice Sir Yang Ti-liang asked me to go and see him. He said to me, I am offering you the High Court bench. I said I accept. Altogether there were 10 words thats how it happened. I have to say that when I was at the Bar, I worked very hard. Insofar as it affected me personally I didnt mind so much, but I think I didnt have enough time to spend with my children. So apart from wanting to eventually go on the bench and wanting to respond positively to Sir Ti-liang 100 percent, it also occurred to me that there was some advantage of going on the bench, such as maybe having a little bit more time to go on holidays with my children. I didnt want to sit down and write a story of my life from start to finish. I wanted to tell these [stories] in terms of recollections, and not always in chronological order, but in the order which they came to my mind. When we chat with our friends and tell stories, we do it that way.

I felt that there was a story to be told about the Hong Kong that I grew up in, in which I practiced law and ultimately sat on the bench. There were also many interesting personalities that Ive come acrossmost of them in law but some of them friends and family. And I thought that if I could talk about these things and these people, it may provide a written record of some things which, if left to oral tradition, would be forgotten. There were the great constitutional cases which stick in my mind for the importance of the cases themselves. But very often, you come across people of great courage. They stay in your memory. I think sometimes people in Hong Kong tend not to give themselves enough credit. I think this is a place of very good people. I dont mean to say there is not a lot of harshness and inequalityits all over the world. But by and large, people in Hong Kong are much more caring than they are given credit for, or give themselves credit for. Free speech should be protected and respected. People sometimes like to use the expression that a right is not absolute. They therefore say that free speech isnt absolute because then you would be entitled to defame and defraud anybody. So obviously you cant do away with the whole of law of libel or destroy confidentiality. There are secrets that people are entitled to protect. Free speech involves that. I think in Hong Kong we do have proper respect for free speech. Most people recognize that since a right to reputation is a human right, there should be a law of defamation. I agree with that.

They say to the government, If you seek to be in government, do these things for the people. Frankly, I think that the line wasnt actually drawn at the handover. I think the assertiveness of the Hong Kong people was growing in the years leading up to it, and its continued. Not everybody likes it some people talk about better times. People in Hong Kong have not lost their selfreliance and their ability to work hard, but they do feel that there are certain responsibilities that they can call upon the government to fulfill. I think one has to realize there are some people with so much determination and skill that they can overcome any adversity. We are talking about a decent life for everybodyincluding people who dont have determination or great abilities, just ordinary people. And they are asking the government to do more for them. My favorite thing about Hong Kong is being here, and my least favorite thing about Hong Kong is when I am not here. Do I have anything I wish I had done differently? Not really, since I dont bet on horse races. The law is not the be all and end all of things. I always talk about the law, because it is the area in which I can help. You can never retire completelyyou can always help other people. A lot of people are shy and retiring. I am shy and not retiring.

Free Will Astrology

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Thomas Gray was a renowned 18th-century English poet best remembered for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. It was a short poem only 986 words, which is less than the length of this horoscope column. On the other hand, it took him seven years to write it, or an average of 12 words per month. I suspect that you are embarking on a labor of love that will evolve at a gradual pace, too, Cancerian. It might not occupy you for seven years, but it will probably take longer than you imagine. And yet, thats exactly how long it should take. This is a character-building, life-defining project that cant and shouldnt be rushed.
LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): The 18th-century
German philosopher Georg Christoph Lichtenberg accepted the possibility that some humans have the power of clairvoyance. The second sight possessed by the Highlanders in Scotland is actually a foreknowledge of future events, he wrote. I believe they possess this gift because they dont wear trousers. That is also why in all countries women are more prone to utter prophecies. I bring this to your attention, Leo, because I believe that in the coming weeks youre likely to catch accurate glimpses of whats to comeespecially when youre not wearing pants. re-wilding. In the coming months, Scorpio, I suggest you consider a re-wilding program of your own. Cosmic forces will be on your side if you reinvigorate your connection to the raw, primal aspects of both your own nature and the great outdoors. the sidewalk or lose a sock in the coming weeks. Your cereal will never get soggy; itll sit there, staying crispy, just for you. The pheromones you secrete will affect people miles away. Youll have the power to pop open a pinata with the blink of your eye. If you take a Rorschach test, youll ace it. Ghosts will sit around campfires telling stories about you. Cafes and restaurants may name sandwiches after you. If you so choose, youll be able to live vicariously through yourself. You will give your guardian angel a sense of security.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Who

was Russias greatest poet? Many critics say it was Alexander Pushkin, who lived in the 19th century. His abundant creativity was undoubtedly related to his unruly libido. By the time he was 31 years old, hed had 112 lovers. But then he met his ultimate muse, the lovely and intelligent Natalya Goncharova, to whom he remained faithful. Without you, he wrote to her, I would have been unhappy all my life. I half-expect something comparable to happen for you in the next ten months, Sagittarius. You may either find an unparalleled ally or else finally ripen your relationship with an unparalleled ally youve known for a while. One way or another, I bet you will commit yourself deeper and stronger.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): In his book The Fisher

King and the Handless Maiden, Robert Johnson says many of us are as much in debt with our psychic energy as we are with our financial life. We work too hard. We rarely refresh ourselves with silence and slowness and peace. We dont get enough sleep or good food or exposure to nature. And so were routinely using up more of our reserves than we are able to replenish. Were chronically running a deficit. It is genius to store energy, says Johnson. He recommends creating a plan to save it up so that you always have more than enough to draw on when an unexpected opportunity arrives. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to make this a habit, Aries.

VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Were you nurtured

well by caring adults in the first year of your life? If so, I bet you now have the capacity to fix whatevers ailing your tribe or posse. You could offer some inspiration that will renew everyones motivation to work together. You might improve the group communication as you strengthen the foundation that supports you all. And what about if you were NOT given an abundance of tender love as a young child? I think you will still have the power to raise your crews mood, but you may end up kicking a few butts along the way.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): Its Grease

Weeka time when you need to make sure everything is as well-oiled as possible. Does your car need a quart of Castrol? Is it time to bring more extra virgin olive oil into your kitchen? Do you have any K-Y Jelly in your nightstand, just in case? Are there creaky doors or stuck screws or squeaky wheels that could use some WD-40? Be liberal with the lubrication, Capricornboth literally and metaphorically. You need smooth procedures and natural transitions.

LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 22): Summing up his

experiment in living at Walden Pond, naturalist Henry David Thoreau said this: I learned that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws will be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings. Given the astrological factors that will be impacting your life in the next 12 months, Libra, you might consider adopting this philosophy as your own.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In the course

of your long life, I estimate you will come up with approximately 60,000 really good ideas. Some of these are small, like those that help you decide how to spend your weekend. Some are big ones, like those that reveal the best place for you to live. As your destiny unfolds, you go through phases when you have fewer good ideas than average, and other phases when youre overflowing with them. The period youre in right now is one of the latter. You are a fountain of bright notions, intuitive insights, and fresh perspectives. Take advantage of the abundance, Taurus. Solve as many riddles and dilemmas as you can.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Two years

into the War of 1812, British soldiers invaded Washington, D.C. They set fire to the White House and other government buildings. The flames raged out of control, spreading in all directions. The entire city was in danger of burning. In the nick of time, a fierce storm hit, producing a tornado and heavy rains. Most of

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): No one knows

the scientific reasons why long-distance runners sometimes get a second wind. Nonetheless, such a thing exists. It allows athletes to resume their peak efforts after seemingly having reached a point of exhaustion. According to my reading of the astrological omens, a metaphorical version of this happy event will occur for you sometime soon, Gemini. You made a good beginning but have been flagging a bit of late. Any minute now, though, I expect you will get your second wind.

SCORPIO (Oct 23-Nov 21): Thirteen

thousand years ago, lions and mammoths and camels roamed parts of North America. But along with many other large beasts, they ultimately became extinct. Possible

the fires were extinguished. Battered by the weather, the British army retreated. Americas capital was saved. I predict that you, Aquarius, will soon be the beneficiary of a somewhat less dramatic example of this series of events. Give thanks for the lucky storm.

Dear Mr. Know-It-All, My ceiling keeps turning black due to the wetness after turning off the air conditioner, but none of my friends has this problem. Why me? Please give me cleaning advice, and is there any particular type of ceiling paint I can choose for my remodeling next year? Help Me Stay Dry Another unwitting victim of black mold! Maybe the universe hates you. The simple answer is a basic solution of bleach and water. Use it several times, because mold can get ingrained into plaster. As for ceiling paint that can combat mold, try Nippon Water-based Emulsion Paint, available at Beauty Town Materials Co. (G/F, 11 Swatow St., Wan Chai, 2332-2778). You should also run a dehumidifier regularly to keep condensation buildup at bay.

Acupressure looses the knot releases the pain

30 years of experience in HK & UK Neck pain is a widespread complaint amongst adults, especially those who sit at desk for prolonged periods. Many office workers experience stiffness and pain in their neck muscles. In more severe cases, they may feel pain and numbness in their arms, or even hands. This pain could be caused by many factors, all of which result in the weakening of Qi (energy) around the neck. This results in knots forming in the muscles around the neck.

SAVAGE LOVE
Dan Savage

I am wondering if you have heard of a dildo that could be mounted on my face, specifically on my nose, so that I penetrate her more deeply while she sits on my face? Strange Fantasy Dude Sadly, theres no out-of-the-box solution I can recommend, says Cory Silverberg of Come As You Are, Torontos worker-owned-and-operated sex shop. There are harnesses that are meant to strap on to the head, like the Head-On Harness available at Stockroom.com. But it covers the mouth. So you wouldnt be able to eat your girlfriend out with one buckled to your face. Cory continues, And there is the often-pokedfun-at Accommodator. (A latex harness that straps a dildo to your chin and looks just as ridiculous as it feels.) But it isnt hollow, so it couldnt be worn comfortably over the nose, he says. And finding something that fits comfortably over your nose is going to be your biggest problem. It would need to be hollow, explains Cory, but it would need enough heft such that it wouldnt be constantly buckling and hitting you in the mouth or between the eyes. The tricky thing is that the nose is so close to the eyes, so anything with straps might dig in or at least go over the eyes in an uncomfortable way. So what do you do? Get in touch with a good harness maker and ask if they do custom work, Cory recommends. A quality harness-maker could, in theory, make you a dildo harness that fits comfortably over your nose. Custom work is expensive, of course. But no one said dreams came cheap, says Cory. But if youre going to go the custom-made route, SFD, I think you might have better luck with

to booze, emotional vulnerability, and a little welltimed, well- intentioned manipulation. And wherever did you get the idea that sex-forsexs-sake cant also be affectionate? Im a 28-year-old woman. Ive been with my current boyfriend for five years. Hes married and has been telling me the whole time that hes going to leave his wife eventually. Theres always an excuse: a crisis with the kids, money problems, etc. Ive been stupid to stay with him for so long, but I just cant keep away from him. I just found out Im pregnant, and I havent told my boyfriend. This is the second time weve been pregnant. Last time he reacted very badly, and I miscarried after a few weeks. I know hell want me to get rid of the baby, but Im going to keep it. Whenever his wife goes away, I go over to the house to spend time with him. Ive been planting evidence of our affair around the house in the hopes his wife will find it. So far, no luck. Id like him to be man enough to leave her, but thats probably never going to happen. I could leave him, but if I do, I want to make sure hes miserable. Im not going to vanish from his life and leave him all happily ever after. Im thinking of going and telling his wife. What do you think? Is there any way I can force him to tell her? Now The Other Mom No advice for you, NTOM, but plenty of prenatal sympathy for a poor unfortunate fetus who deserves better parents or his very own miscarriage. I will, however, hold on to your letter. Im going to forward a copy to every doucheburst who writes in to tell me that gay marriage is wrong because every child deserves a mother and a father. Moms and dads can be great I had a terrific set, myselfbut mix-matched genitals are not enough. Kids need loving, fit, and reasonably sane parents. Having one twatted parent and one pricked parent does not guarantee a happy childhood.

a custom-made hood. Theyre designed to be worn over the nose, and most have mouth openings. You could easily have one made with a wider mouth opening and an extended nosepiece. Im not uncomfortable around womenpretty much all of my friends are womenI dont really have any confidence issues, and I know Im not a prude. But for reasons too complicated to get into here, I just havent gotten around to screwing anybody yet. Im waiting for the right

I am a straight, 18-year-old girl and a college freshman. A couple of months ago, I lost my virginity to my first serious boyfriend, and since then weve been having sex several times a day. Apparently we have been a bit too enthusiastic, because my boyfriend received a note from his downstairs neighbors. In crass and abusive language, they told us to keep it down. I was mortified. Post-note, Ive been tense and nervous during sex, more focused on listening for the neighbors than enjoying the act. This is upsetting me terribly, and I dont know how to make it better. Even if we are both silent, the bed inevitably squeaks and thumps. There is really nowhere else on campus for us to go (I have three roommates who dont get out much). What should I do? I am so depressed by this situation. Loud And Clear Go buy the original Broadway cast recording of Avenue Q. The next time you have sex, blast You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want (When Youre Makin Love) at top volume. When the neighbors complain about the music, tell them that they can listen to show tunes or put up with the noise you guys make when you have sextheir pick.

person, and it just hasnt happened yet. I dont want to have sex with somebody whos drunk or emotionally vulnerable, or manipulate anybody, and its very important to me that sex be (among other things) a form of affection and not isolated sex-for-sexs-sake. I know Im the only person who can answer the question of whether I want to have sex right now. But do I need to have sex right now? Because one day Im going to fall in love, and its going to get sexual. The message I hear from a lot of people I respect is that Im going to pay a price for waiting until then to get laid. Am I? Am I probably going to be okay? Virgin At Thirty Yeah, youll be okaybut by ruling out drunks, the emotionally vulnerable, and the easily manipulated, VAT, you increase the odds that youll remain a virgin for the rest of your natural life. Find out as much as you can on their competitors and how they measure up to them.

Do your research on the company, get the inside scoop on the company culture. Visit the company website and find out as much information about the company history, products and services. Use Linkedin! Here, you can find more information on the company along with new hires, promotions and statistics related to the company. Use Social Media! Facebook and Twitter are your friends. Become a fan of the company on Facebook and follow them

A lot of times, it goes a long way when the interviewer can see that you have put time and effort into learning about their company. This shows initiative and the willingness to learn, these are often the traits that a company is looking for when hiring new staff.
