Lesson # & Title: Lesson 1: Fractions Grade Level & Class Title: Grade 3, Math Standards & Objectives Grade 3: number and operations fractions Develop understanding of fractions as numbers. 1. Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b. NETS-S 1c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues NETS-S 5b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity NETS-S 6a. Understand and use technology systems NETS-S 6b. Select and use applications effectively and productively

Learning Objectives: I want students to learn what a fraction is in terms of number, and how to identify which fraction that a part represents (if a picture shows , , etc.). I want students to think about the world around them; how can they use fractions in their everyday lives? HOW will students demonstrate this? o Students will first learn the vocabulary needed to understand fractions, and show me that they remember what each word means. I will explain the concept of fractions as well. Then, there will be various activities to introduce and practice fractions.

Academic Language Objectives: List key vocabulary (content-specific terms) Fraction Numerator Denominator Whole and part Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks to Support Learning: Time 9:00 am Learning Activities and Purpose Orientation/Engagement/Motivation: Engage: I will begin by showing a video from BrainPop about fractions. http://www.brainpop.com/math/numbersandoperations/fractions/ Link this to their lives: The video will explain what fractions are, and some ways of how they relate to real life. For the next few minutes, I will ask students what the video said, as well as ask them to think about different ways that we can use fractions.

Presentation/Explicit Instruction (teaching/modeling strategies): Now, I will introduce/review the terms that the video taught us (fraction, whole, numerator, denominator, etc) having the kids make flashcards. Then, I will review these terms using a short game on the smart board. I will then use the terms to teach simple fractions such as , , , 1/3, etc.). I will use notebook technology on the smart board and have the kids come up to help with this. Structured Practice/Exploration (learning activities): http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/fractions/memory_fractions1.htm: this is a game online helping with telling how to write fractions for part of a whole Every student will get 10 legos of various colors, and everyone will write down the fractions of each color that they have. Then, students will share what they have with their partner. When students are done with the legos, they will get a paper activity to do to see how some fractions are smaller than others, and how they all measure up. We will do an example on the smart board. Guided Practice/Feedback (Questions youll ask and feedback youll provide): I will ask everyone about the activities we did, and ask for their feedback/thoughts. Independent Practice/Application: Everyone will get a worksheet to work on, which we will go over the next morning after morning work. Closure (concluding questions): I will make sure that no one has any questions, and explain what we will do next with fractions on the board.

Instructional Materials and Support: Smart board: used for activities/learning Legos: used for the activity Index cards, so that the students can keep track of their math terms Scissors and glue, for the last learning activity Assessment: The assessment will be on paper. It will show shapes with shaded areas, and the student will have to write what fraction of the shape is shaded. They will also have multiple choice questions about the vocabulary. This assessment is formal more than anything. I think it will be easier for students to visualize and spend time on the test. I will grade the test to show what the students got right; so if a fraction is half right, I wont take away a whole point. For evidence, I will record the grades and have the student keep these tests for future reference. Technology: Why technology more appropriate: Technology will help students visualize fractions, and it will teach them about real world application as well. How it will facilitate learning: The smart board will make this lesson interactive and fun! Math needs to be fun and easy to understand and apply. Back-up plan: I will use the dry-erase board to do the things that the smart board couldnt, such as writing up definitions, etc.
