Rationale This activity was chosen to support visual / spatial learners. The specific activity was chosen based on the current Ocean theme the children have shown an interest in. Anticipating challenges Children may experience difficulty assembling their chosen materials to create the model. If this is a challenge, I will provide assistance in assembling their chosen materials. 5. Motivation/Introduction - Explain the art project to the children, and the materials that are available to use. In my experience children love using various materials to create things! Maybe show them a sample though I wouldnt want them to copy the example, I want them to be individually creative. B. Concept exploration - We will do this activity at tables - The children will use the supplies to create their diorama - I will offer assistance as needed C. Inquiry (Open Ended Questions) - What colors do you think you would see in the ocean? - What kinds of things do you think you would see in the ocean? - What do you think you could use the string for? - What can you use for fish? - Should we hang them? Or glue them to the back? D. Closure - Tell me about your diorama - What materials did you use and what do they represent? - Are there other things you would like to add or are you ready to display your diorama? E. Assessment - I will ask the children if they want to present the diorama to the class and tell about it. - I will take a photo for documentation, a video if they present to the class. - If further exploration of these materials is desired the children can create a collage or paint sea murals. Extension Ideas - If further exploration of these materials is desired the children can create other dioramas, they could use their dioramas as backgrounds to play in with the plastic animals. The materials could be used to create collages or paint could be used to paint a sea mural.
