Queens gambit
on her own terms. In No One Killed Jessica, she played a hard core journalist who not only has an eye for the scoop but for justice as well. She also impersonated being a male cricketer in Dil Bole Hadippa! She plays a homely middle class Maharashtrian girl who nevertheless is aware of her sexuality in Aiyyaa. Here, she represents the changing face of Indian society where sex is no longer taboo and the female gaze is gaining equal status to the male gaze. Its good to see a woman lusting after a man for a change and the film and her character may bring about a sea change in the way we tell love stories. We are also looking forward to her next release Talaash with bated breath as the RaniAamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor combo is bound to be explosive. Much has been written about her love life and the queen of hearts, whos our cover girl this issue, answers questions about her marriage and more with aplomb. You think you know her but read on... we have a feeling she might surprise you yet... (jitesh.pillaai@wwm.co.in)
Rani Mukerji

ani Mukerji is making a comeback. Did she ever leave? Sometimes, the tabloids get it right but most times, they are way off target. Icons like Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi or Rani Mukerji cant make comebacks because they havent faded from public memory in the first place. Its like saying threepiece suits are making a comeback or bandhgalas are back in vogue. Classics never fade away. And thats what Rani is, a class act. Be it Ghulam (1998), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Saathiya (2002), Yuva (2004), Black (2005), Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna or No One Killed Jessica (2011), shes wowed the audience with her natural portrayal of complex characters. Hindi film heroines can get by being arm candy but Rani was never satisfied with just that (though she did it superbly on occasion). In her first film itself, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997), she played a rape victim who fights for justice. In Black--arguably her best performance till date--she played a blind as well as deaf and dumb girl who took on the world and learned to live

Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi

FUN NIGHT

Bollywoods original divas Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi danced together on the same stage for the first time ever for the finale of the reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. It was a memorable moment indeed. But Mads had quite a blast otherwise as well since she had her hubby Dr Sriram Nene and kids Arin and Ryan for company. We even caught a glimpse of the two kids playing on the sets with their daddy. Sweet, na?

A LEGENDARY EVENING

Imran Khan

Shah Rukh Khan and Yash Chopra started the promotions of Jab Tak Hai Jaan with a bang. On the occassion of the veterans 80th birthday, a special press conference was held where the veteran reminisced about his over 50-year journey in the industry. Having worked on several films together, the director seemed absolutely at ease with SRK. Often called the simplest man of Bollywood, Chopra defended the complex nature of his films saying that he didnt make films on love, he made them on human relationships. Truly an evening to remember!

RUN BABY RUN

Doesnt Imran Khan look like hes doing a sprint here? Known for his jovial nature, we werent surprised to catch him in such a happy frame of mind. But if you ask us, you dont need to run Imran. With the hits youve been churning out, youre already racing ahead!

SALMAN KHAN HAS A FAN WHOS AS LARGE HEARTED AS HE IS. SALMAN WAS IN A STATE OF SHOCK WHEN THE MAN GIFTED HIM A SUPERBIKE WORTH ` 16 LAKH DURING THE GANPATI FESTIVAL

Pam wants Yash to go on

It was a rather warm event that took place in Mumbai recently when Shah Rukh Khan interviewed Yash Chopra on his 50 plus years in the film industry. At the end of the interesting conversation, when Yashji announced that Jab Tak Hain Jaan would be his last film as director, wife Pam Chopra, who was in the front row in the audience promptly gave out a surprised, Kyaa? Perhaps matching the sentiments of everyone in the audience that day. Clearly, she wants to see Yashji continue doing what he does best- direct films.

KANGNAS PARENTS TO THE RESCUE

Kangna Ranaut is unhappy after her breakup with her firang boyfriend, Nicholas. Even though the split was mutual, the girl is in despair. According to reports, the relationship couldnt work out because both had different expectations. While Nicholas wanted to settle down and have a family, Kangna isnt ready to chuck up her career and settle down to domesticity. To cheer her up and provide able support, her parents have come from Himachal Pradesh to stay with her in Mumbai.

Ranbir and Deepika spotted

Asin takes a chill pill
After working non-stop for months, Asin took a well-deserved break in Europe. The weather was just perfect and she had a ball sightseeing with her parents and cousins in the cool climes of Greece and Italy.

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone were recently seen killing it at a nightclub called Live. The two let their hair down and made the most of their time together. Onlookers swear about their reported chemistry on the dance floor. In fact, eye witnesses insist the two were so lost in each other that they were oblivious of anyone around.

NEEDLES FOR SALMAN

WorldMags.net
FarahSonakshi rift?

Salman Khan, we hear, has been taking acupuncture treatment for his illness. The doctors have been inserting needles into his forehead and cheeks to help alleviate his pain. We sincerely hope the needles work their magic and relieve him of trauma once and for all.

The fact that Sonakshi Sinha didnt promote Shirish Kunders Joker doesnt seem to have gone down with the directors wife Farah Khan. The lady hasnt taken the slight well and the minute she got the chance, shes shown Sonakshi the door. Reports say the young actress was on the top of Farahs list to play the lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan in her Happy New Year but when Sonakshi refused to do the rounds for Joker, Farah briskly crossed her off the list. Now it seems Farah is considering other actresses like Parineeti Chopra whose dates are fully booked. Will things work out for Farah? Wait and watch.

Tantrum Queen
Mallika Sherawat continues to be a diva. Known to be highly demanding, she reportedly throws regular tantrums on the sets. Heres the latest. She was required to tour various cities to promote Kismet Love Paisa Delhi. But Mallikas demands burnt a huge hole in the producers pocket. She insisted that six members of her staff including her personal manager and spot boy would travel business class with her. Tough on the production house but the lady refused to budge.

John gets whipped

The October sun was scorching hot but the heat on the set of Shootout At Wadala was several degrees more. Much to the distress of the onlookers. Sanjay Gupta was filming a scene in which an actor playing a cop was hitting John Abraham with a thick leather belt. The sound of the whiplash had everyone squirming in their seats. In fact, the girls around shrieked every time the belt hit Johns back. When someone reprimanded the cop, asking him to go easy, John intervened and said he was fine and even asked the cop to keep at it as he wanted the lashing to look real. As the director yelled Cut, John stood in a torn shirt with black and blue bruises on his body. But there was a smile on his face, for a job well done.

Amritas identity crisis

KAJOLS WONDER GIRL

Priyanka all for charity
The success of Barfi! has done wonders for Priyanka Chopra. According to the grapevine, her spectacular performance in the film, has encouraged several institutions for the mentally challenged to approach her to be the face of their organisations. And Priyanka, who is big on charity, is seriously considering their proposals as she believes her participation may encourage people to give more and more charity. Expect an announcement soon.

Now Amrita Rao may not be among the A-list stars of B-town but the actress herself certainly seems to think so. Why else would she hide her face while entering a coffee shop in suburban Mumbai to order a takeaway? Dressed in a pink top and blue jeans, Amrita was spotted covering her face with a scarf and constantly staring at her toes. Could it be shes broken out in a rash? Strange behaviour from someone whos hardly likely to start a stampede.

Kajols daughter, Nysa, is quite the multi-talented kid. She is learning gymnastics. Whats more, the lil moppet has joined baking classes for kids. Recently, she even baked a cupcake much to the delight of her friends. Kajol's one helluva proud mom.

WorldMags.net Imran BIPASHA BLASTS plays POOR ACTORS valet

While Imran Khan was on a recent visit to London, he played valet to two young ladies. A source close to the actor reveals, Imran was standing outside a popular club in London late at night, when two girls seemingly drunk were having much trouble parking their car. Being the perfect gentleman that he is, he offered to help them. And though the two girls were of Indian origin, they didnt recognise him and gave him their car keys. It was only after hed parked the car that they realised who he was. Needless to say, they apologised profusely and even clicked pictures with him.

Bipasha Basu doesnt seem in a charitable mood these days. After Raaz 3, Bipasha wants to concentrate on performance-oriented films. And the actress seems to have lost patience with poor performers. She recently told Filmfare, Some of our top stars are such bad actors. They dont even show any emotions in their films. Every star isnt a great actor. Some people are just stars. We couldnt agree more.

THE GRAPEVINE IS ABUZZ WITH TALK OF A CLANDESTINE LIAISON BETWEEN A MUSIC BARON AND A STARLET. SHES EVEN BELIEVED TO HAVE STRIPPED IN HIS OFFICE! TUT, TUT, THE LENGTHS SOME PEOPLE GO TO

Triumphant Esha
Prakash Jha had all but signed Huma Qureshi (of Gangs Of Wasseypur fame) for Chakravyuh when Arjun Rampal reportedly insisted he take on Esha Gupta. An insider says, The filmmakers were wary of Eshas bold image and couldnt see her in the character of a hard-hitting police officer. There were many eyebrows raised when she was signed because Arjun believed in her talent and highly recommended her. But scepticism turned to disbelief to awe when after a few days into the shoot, her hard work and commitment won everyone over. Ah, alls well that ends well, we guess.

EMRAANS GAME PLAN

WorldMags.net

Parineeti trumps Yami

True, false or inbetween? Seems Mahesh Bhatt has reportedly advised Emraan Hashmi to mention Salman Khan in every interview or interaction that he does with the media. The idea is to create a brand identity just like Salmans and gain the adulation of the masses. Mahesh Bhatts foresightedness is being adopted by Emraan and he is all set to abide by his much experienced uncles word.

Finally, it seems Parineeti Chopra has jumped onto the brand endorsement bandwagon and will be endorsing a popular deodorant brand. However, it seems the actress wasnt the first choice for the ad. Says our source, Yami Gautam was the first choice for the ad since shes a popular face on TV and even has a hit film to her credit. But the price she quoted was rather high and so she lost the offer. Though Yami now sees reason and has cut her price, this time its Parineeti whos come up a winner.

Angry Oberoi

SRIDEVI-MADS ACT

You gotta hand it to them. Once the cameras were rolling the two were charm personified. Once Cut was announced it was a different story all together. Though the temperature didnt plunge to the Arctic levels, there was a distinct coolness between Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi on the sets of a dance show. When the two met, there was none of the hugging and flying kisses that are the norm in the industry. In fact, Sri kept to herself and wasnt seen in animated conversation with Karan Johar or Remo DSouza either. Guess they arent known for their acting prowess for nothing.

Riteish & Genelia act choosy

While Genelia Deshmukh is a popular face on the brand circuit, Riteish isnt hot. Now the latest buzz however is that several brands are out to woo Genelia and Riteish to be the face of their brand. But, but, but, the two have been rejecting every offer left, right and centre. Apparently, they believe that the brand they endorse together should be something special. Playing hard to get can prove detrimental at times. Lets just hope they know what theyre doing.

Actor Vivek Oberoi is maha upset with reports that he was chucked out of Balajis Shootout At Wadala because of unprofessional behaviour. Journalists writing such slander should first check their facts as he never signed the film in the first place, he fumes. If Ekta thought I was unprofessional, why would she offer me another film? he combats. Point taken.

WorldMags.net Busy bee SRK INVESTS IN A Deepika PARK FOR KIDS

Deepika Padukone is in a whirligig with her shooting dates. When she isnt shooting for Sanjay Bhansalis Ram Leela, shes neck-deep into Chennai Express with Shah Rukh Khan and Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai with Ranbir Kapoor. Clearly, shes a girl on a mission. Recently when Filmfare approached her for our online chat, she politely begged off because her dates were fully booked. The much willing and single Deepika also has no time for love or play thanks to her busy, busy schedule.

Imran shows his displeasure

Heard that Imran Khan was miffed when his dates for the Once Upon A Time sequel were wasted. After shooting for four days for the first schedule, there was almost a gap of six months. For a while Imran, being a gentleman kept his cool, then he communicated his displeasure to all concerned. No sooner did he do that, than shooting schedules were reorganised and started in a jiffy. Its an interesting casting of sorts, what with Sonakshi Sinha being paired opposite Imran.

We all know kids are close to Shah Rukh Khans heart. Now after entertaining the mites for two decades on the big screen, hes now ready to give them a different type of fun experience. Reportedly, he is apparently investing as a partner in a childrens amusement park in a mall in the suburbs (R Mall, Ghatkopar). Apart from entertainment, it will also be an educational experience for the children. The foreign concept and technology will be here soon. Watch this space for more.

Diana Penty acts pricey

Merely one film old, Diana Penty seems to be getting a little too big for her boots. A little early we might add. Playing diva to the hilt, not only is she asking big monies for commercials shes acting snooty with the media too. At a recent fashion week in Delhi, she avoided the media hordes and made a beeline for her make-up room, perhaps expecting them to follow her for exclusive one on ones. But they didnt much to her dismay.

WACKY CURLS
Arent poker straight locks so pass? Soft curls are every divas hottest rage. Read on to know how to ace the look

WorldMags.net

SOFT CURLS IN JUST 8 STEPS:

Wash and brush your hair thoroughly. Scraggily scrunch your hair when its wet for that beachy, wavy look. Divide your tresses into upper, middle and lower layers. Take the lower layer closer to your neckline and make a few thick strands. The size of the section influences the crispness of the curl. Spray volumizing serum on every strand individually. Avoid using styling products like hair spray or gels, they make your hair hard and droopy instead of the lively, natural ones. Use a straightening iron near the tip of one strand and roll the iron inwards or outwards. Do not spray hair products while ironing your hair, it could burn your tresses. Complete the rest of the sections similarly. Continue the same procedure in the middle layer with slightly thinner hair strands.

Follow the same procedure with the upper layer. Use the help of a tail comb to separate every strand, possibly one inch wide. This section takes longer because you need to tease your layers for volume.

For teasing hair, firmly hold up the strand with one hand, gently brush against it. Make sure to keep a distance of approximately five inches from the scalp. Make sure that you create tangles that offer resistance. Keep on repeating the brushing, till you have attained the desired volume. After this, apply serum on the teased section. Let it down gently and finally curl your locks. Brush hair from middle downwards with your fingers to soften the curls.

RED RAGE
Bold. Gorgeous. Sensational. Red is easily the sexiest colour. And an elegant red gown or maxi dress can add oodles of charisma to an appearance. Heres a gang of B-town girls sporting this latest trend. Take your pick

1 1 Sassy girl Think red gown, think elegance. And Bipasha Basu is elegance personified in this Pria Kataria Puri maxi dress. Plus, everything looks great on that enviable body. The golden tassels stand out. A winning look for any occasion. 2 Sexy lady Malaika Arora Khan sports this stunning red Namrata Joshipura gown with lan. The deep neck and sequins add oodles of glamour. Minimalistic make-up with just a statement ring makes this the perfect look for a red carpet event. 3 Simple elegance Alia Bhatt shows us how one can look demure even while sporting a striking colour like red. She keeps her look simple by choosing to only accessorise her maxi dress with a gold cuff bracelet. But we think it's a little too plain for someone so vivacious and young.

Red on red hasnt looked hotter. Were talking about Deepika Padukones sexy red lipstick on her red lace Gaurav Gupta gown. She gets brownie points for that eye-catching hairdo. Want to make a bold statement and grab eyeballs? This is one look you must try!

WOOING IN WHITE

Whether they are making a red carpet appearance or attending an event, white seems to be the colour of the season for many of our B-towners. Check out the ones who stole our hearts
1 Ethnic chic We love Katrina Kaifs embroidered Indian outfit. With barely any make-up and her hair tied in a bun, the actress is a vision in white. You can also glam it up for a sangeet or a mehendi function with exquisite silver or gold jewellery. 2 Cool & casual Looking uber cool in a white mens top on white jeans, Akshay Kumar seems all set to go for a casual brunch. The only dash of colour here are his black loafers, which complement his look perfectly. Aint he always stylish? 3 All class Rahul Khanna gets it bang on with his black bow-tie. Even those black patent leather shoes and white and black pocket scarf have us drooling. If you ask us, a white tuxedo hasnt looked better. Hope the men out there are listening!

The pretty Karisma Kapoor looks classy in this white Paule Ka dress. The black belt, black peep-toes and the black and white Chanel clutch are a perfect contrast to her outfit. Opt for this look if you want to look your best at a formal office dinner.

THE MUSE
Once youve been bitten by the Sabyasachi bug, theres no looking back. Tinsel town hotties cant resist this designers creations either. While some take to monotony, some dont
1 No more guesses Shes the true blue Sabyasachi torchbearer. Vidya Balan doesnt seem to mind it though. However, we cant wait for the day she gets a tad experimental with her tastes. Hopefully, therell be some twists in her fashion sensibilities too. Till then, monotony it is. 2 Chaotic daze Aiyyaa! Why such a busy attire for someone who isnt gifted in the height department? Adding to Rani Mukerjis mishap are those heavy-duty neckpieces. She doesnt score with her look and she even lacks attention to detail, read baby pink nails. 3 Chic mode Doesnt she look like that hot airhostess we just cant take our eyes off? Jacqueline Fernandez gets it right by flaunting her midriff in a high-waist skirt. What also makes for a trendy change is her fancy hairdo and earrings, ditching that predictable statement neckpiece.

Were glad that this diva opted for a saree that exudes vintage charm. In fact, this silhouette is perfect for Sridevi since it gives her slender frame that much needed fullness. Earrings were the only way she could accessorise it. She aces her look with a neat bun. We like!

The film stars singer Shaan too, besides Mika and Gabriela. Sunil tells me its a comedy of errors. Mika is called Balwinder Singh and so is Shaan. Now, a rich old man dies and leaves everything to Balwinder Singh. So its a race for every Balwinder in town to prove hes the real one. Sunil is hopeful of the films success and wants to carry it forward as a franchise. Are you aware of the Carry On... series? They were situational comedies and I have the same vision for Balwinder Singh. Sunil adds, The coming together of Shaan and Mika would be unusual for the audience. They sing their own songs and have composed as well. Besides them, Lalit Pandit too contributed towards the music. Veteran choreographer Chinni

If she can pull off Tamil and Telugu numbers then this must be a cakewalk for her. She has come to understand some Hindi. She knows how to emote and can move to the rhythm. COMEDY CIRCUS
Its raining comedies and how. The good news is that the viewers have become more discerning and are rejecting anything that doesnt meet their standards. So filmmakers cant serve up anything in the name of comedy and still come up trumps. Kamal Dhamaal Malamaal, made at an estimated budget of 15 crores didnt have the wherewithal to sustain enough footfalls and could manage some 6 crores as first week collections. Oh My God! with an estimated budget of 20 crores garnered 50 crores and is still counting. Its message that we should stop blindly believing in God seems to have hit home. Not bad for a Paresh Rawal film. Kismet Love Paisa Dilli was trashed by the critics and couldnt cover its miniscule budget. English Vinglish, a comedy revolving around how knowing English is a pan-Indian obsession, garnered good results. Made on a purported budget of 15 crores, it has garnered some 27 crores worldwide so far and has helped Sridevi make a smashing comeback.

Youre a warm, social person. Why have you been keeping such a low-profile?

WorldMags.net Tell us about the content of even Aamir Khan resorts to

Everyone has a viewpoint. Many actors have others handling their account when they are busy. The fewer people around me, the happier I am.

Aiyyaa

I havent deliberately maintained a low-profile. Thats just perception. Today everyone is on social networking sites and in the news. Im old-fashioned. Till four-five years ago, we gave interviews only when our films were about to release or when we had something important to say. I follow the same pattern. Im more interested in the making of my films. Im not into Twitter, Facebook or blogs. Maybe, thats why people think I keep a low profile.

Aiyyaa has romance, story, music, dance and entertainment. Its a film you can watch with your family.

Every film of yours creates anticipation

But even the Prime Minister is on Twitter!

Well, its important for the PM to be on Twitter. But whats there for me to say? People who have much to share like to be on social networking sites. Im happy in my circle. I spend most of my time at home.

Every actor is alive because of his/ her fans. Im glad that my fans love me so much. I have an immense responsibility towards them. Thats why Im careful while signing a film. What is also important is to judge whether I myself would like to watch the film as an audience. Audience tastes change every year. You should keep that in mind. You need to choose directors and writers who move with the times.

In Aiyyaa, your character Meenakshi is supposed to get attracted to a person by his smell? Would that apply to you in real life too?
Of course! In my earlier interviews I was often asked, What attracts you to a man? And Id reply, Smell! A man should smell really good.

Which of your co-stars smells best?

Shah Rukh Khan. He always wears wonderful perfumes. Id often check his perfume collection. Id even ask him, What perfume are you wearing today?

Will Aiyyaa make it to the 100 crore club?

Do you look on them as a waste of time?

No, its an individual viewpoint. Some like to keep in touch and let

Maybe if you go to Shirdi (Sai Babas shrine) and pray for me, this may come true (Smiles). I believe in doing my work with all my heart and love. I dont waste my time thinking beyond that. We do a film hoping it is liked

What attracted you to Meenakshi Deshpande of Aiyyaa?

Meenakshi gets attracted to Surya (Prithviraj Sukumaran) because of the way he smells. Its an absolutely

everyone know what theyre up to. My outlook is different. Im not saying Ill never be on Twitter. I might be tomorrow. But till now, I havent felt the need to do so. I believe each time I come in front of the audience, I should come with a film. Im not interested in talking about my personal life. Im more interested in my work. Perhaps Im wrong in not giving enough importance to social networking sites. Maybe, I should. by both the audience and the critics. How far it goes is not in our hands. It also depends on your destiny. new flavour in Hindi films. Anurag Kashyap often praised Sachin Kundalkar as a director. He even showed me a short film by Sachin and I liked his work. I told Anurag that if Sachin came to me with a good story, Id definitely work with him. And Sachin did come to me with a great story. Also, Id never played a Marathi girl.

Many actresses aim just to be part of the 100 crore club without giving any importance to their roles. Would you do such a film?
No one can come to you with a script and claim that it will be a success.

Dont your friends like Karan Johar advise you to be on Twitter?

But Sajid Khan claims his remake of Himmatwala will make that kind of money.

How did you prepare to play Meenakshi?

Oh yes, they do. But you dont need to follow everything that your friends say. Some ask me to be on Twitter just before the release of my film saying it would be good for the publicity of the film. But I believe thats a misuse of the medium.

But this is something which

Maybe God has been kind to him till now. But as far as I know, theres no one who can say, Do this film; it will win you an award or it will do 100 crore business. If anyone can predict this, all filmmakers would rush to him and stop going to temples and mosques. My way of working is content driven. Without content, nothing can work.

I had to look like Meenakshi Deshpande. So it was important for me to talk like her, walk like her... Meenakshi doesnt dream only at night but also during the day. I found that trait interesting. I did many readings with Sachin and his associate director Chinmay Kelkar. The way a Marathi speaking person pronounces English or Hindi words is different. So I imbibed that nuance. I wanted Meenakshi to be

like someones girlfriend, someones lover, daughter-in-law, daughter, sister, niece... The audience should feel that this girl belongs to their neighbourhood. When you work with a good actor, even your work improves. Prithvi helped me give better shots. The supporting cast of this film is from Marathi theatre and cinema; all of them are great actors. If people appreciate my work in the film, then the credit goes to them. Prithvi told me that hes been my fan for long and that he had seen Kuch Kuch Hota Hai when he hadnt even begun acting.

Talaash is also with a new director - Reema Kagti. Whats the best part about working with new directors?
Sachin Kundalkar and Reema both like me as an actor. When an artiste works with a director whos fond of her, then its a completely different rapport. Reema had been approaching me for 10 years. New directors have already seen your films, so their perspective is different. They try to portray you differently in their script. So, half your work is made easy.

Reportedly, you went shopping for your costumes in Aiyyaa. Was this a first?
Ive done it ever since I worked in Saathiya. Even for Bunty Aur Babli, I went shopping with Akki Narula (costume designer).

How did you react when it was reported that 10 lakhs was spent on your make-up?

Is it true that youre helping Prithviraj to bag roles in Hindi films?

How would you react to a lie? If I talk about this, Id only be giving importance to a journalist who doesnt deserve it.

How was the experience of working with Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran?
It was great! Hes a seasoned actor. Hes cooperative and intelligent.

Really? I didnt know that! Theres nothing like that. If you ask me about Prithvi today, Ill only say good things about him. You work with some people, you see a spark in them and you cant help praising them. But everyone has their own destiny. No one can make anyone. Who reaches where and when, is all written. You shouldnt give credit to someone else for this.

Who else would you like to work with?

Id like to work with Zoya Akhtar. Zoyas been wanting to work with me for years. Im sure working with her will add to my performance. I also like Imtiaz Ali, Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Basu, Anurag Kashyap, Maneesh Sharma and Abhishek Chaubey. I never got a chance to work with Adi (filmmaker Aditya Chopra). The directors you named make meaningful films. Are you on such a trip now?
No. Imtiaz Alis films are highly commercial. Zoya also makes commercial films. Id also be happy to work with those directors with whom Ive already worked, like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Shaad Ali. Then, there is Karan Johar. If Reema and Sachin approach me again, Id work with them too.

Marriage is not something to be rushed into. While doing Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, I realised that if you marry, it should be for the right reasons. Its important that you make it work and not take it as a joke.

He has been my producer. and is a friend.

We share a common trait we are both frank, we hold nothing in our hearts. In Talaash we didnt have any scenes together. But weve shot together for a promotional video.

Forty-plus actors continue to rule while its not the same with actresses of that age

QUICK FIRE FROM FANS

IF YOU COULD SWITCH CAREERS, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
@Funky_Nicky23 I would bake a cake.

If you choose scripts according to your age then the audience will accept you. Of course, male actors continue to play the hero even after 40, while heroines dont. But if you maintain yourself and present yourself well, people will want to see you. Finally, content is king. For example Meryl Streep won the Best Actress award at the Oscars (for The Iron Lady) last year. Slowly, the trend here is also changing.

Youve worked with Aamir Khan again too. What has remained unchanged about him?

His passion for work. Actually, its increasing every day. His dedication towards a project has doubled. There used to be a sense of fun earlier, which is less today.

@Star_Khadija I feel proud because I have learnt a lot from Aamir. He has been an integral part of my growth as an actor.

HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN PEOPLE CALL YOU THE FEMALE VERSION OF AAMIR KHAN AKA A PERFECTIONIST?

Actors like Kajol and Madhuri Dixit are somewhere redefining this

Yes. Even Sridevi is doing so. Slowly, the age barrier will disappear too.

When you are the biggest star in a project, do you try to take advantage of the fact?

Who among the new actresses has impressed you? Parineeti Chopra seems to have a similar spark to yours

I loved Deepika Padukones work in Cocktail; Parineetis in Ishaqzaade, Anushka Sharmas in Band Baaja Baaraat, Sonakshi Sinhas in Dabangg and Katrina Kaifs in New York. Anushka and Parineeti are natural and act straight from the heart.

@AddictedToRani Hmmm. I also regret not being on a social networking site but there are lot of people who help me pass on msgs to all my fans. So just wanna let all the Ranians around the world know I get their love and msgs.

WHEN WILL YOU JOIN A SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE? WE WANNA SEND YOU MSGS!

No. When you are a team player the words advantage and disadvantage hold no meaning. Today the nature of film units has changed. You find people fresh out of film schoolsall young guns working. The atmosphere on the sets is informal. You cant even try to take advantage as this generation is the smartest ever. But you have to keep telling them the right way to do things.

If you decide to quit acting...

IS IT TRUE THAT YOU'RE GOING TO MARRY ADITYA CHOPRA?

@Mitha86Mitha Not true.

Do the new actresses need to be afraid of established actresses like you?

No actor is big enough to decide when to stop working. Its the audiences

No, new actresses just need to be respectful towards their seniors. Ive always respected the work of my seniors and loved them. Afraid is not the right word. n

Though Dibakar Banerjees Shanghai won critical acclaim, it didnt work at the box office
The film hasnt booked huge profits but it had made money. For a film of its kind, the budget was big (reportedly 19 crores). There was no clarity in Shanghai about who the hero was and who was the villain. The plot should have been simpler. If you say what is wrong and what is right in a straightforward manner, shoot it simply and put in some songs, then the combination works. Shanghai is successful in a way. Its a step forward for Indian cinema. Most films go over-the-top these days. Everyone follows the herd mentality of making a comedy film or a sex film. Some studios are growing by making only such kind of films. Its not that they are marketing gurus. It means that they can only sell cheap stuff.

I think I should make adjustments. Ive been stubborn in following the path Ive chosen... But if Id done both kinds of films, Id be neither here nor there
conventional film where there is a hero, heroine and villain?
At times I think I should make adjustments. Im stubborn and am only following the path Ive chosen for myself. But its brought me respect. If Id done both kinds of films, Id be neither here nor there. Right now, I am somewhere at least. I did Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Now I am working in Chakravyuh.

Its important for audiences and the industry to understand what you are all about. You have to make your own brand just like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have.

You worked hard to play TA Krishnan in Shanghai. Did Prakash Jhas Chakravyuh also require such preparation?
To play some characters you have to prepare a lot because they belong to a different background. For some you have to prepare less because you know their background. T A Krishnans character was far removed from my life. His age, background, attitude, language was all different. Kabir in Chakravyuh is more identifiable.

What challenges did you face while shooting for Chakravyuh since it was largely shot in a forest?
Theres a lot of action in the film. So in a way it was demanding.

You surprised everyone by agreeing to work with Sonam Kapoor in Raanjhanaa after the rancour post the release of Aisha
Im just doing a cameo in Raanjhanaa (director Anand L Rai). So I dont have to suffer Sonam for long (Laughs). What happened was in the past. One should not hold on to grudges and must move on in life. But whatever I said earlier, I still maintain. I will not retract my earlier statement. (Reportedly Abhay said Aisha, Sonams home production, was more about clothes than acting).

With Preeti Desai

So you have forgotten it all?

Such things happen all the time. I was critical of my own film, so it became a big issue. But I have all the right to criticise it. We always criticise other peoples films. Then why cant we be critical of our own? Do you think I love all the films Ive worked in? There are many I havent liked. But I have forgotten the past. I dont think the Kapoor family is holding on to it either. Life is short. People forgive and forget. If I had had any problems working with Sonam in Aisha, I wouldnt have done Raanjhanaa. There were no problems on the set.

There is no one more beautiful than Preeti. The worlds most beautiful woman is my girlfriend... Its very difficult to find a beautiful girl whos also simple. If a girl is beautiful, it somehow goes to her head

for the passion. Where you cant charge your price. You have to be clear about your priorities. Whether you want to be a star and make money or you want to be an actor and command respect. The two dont always go together. I wanted both. I knew that Dev.D would do a lot of business but I was not a big name then. Those days people who made a film with me had the attitude You should be thankful that were making a film with you - what is your market? When Dev.D became a hit, even the studio (UTV Spotboy) was surprised. Had they known the film would be so successful they would have removed me from the film at the eleventh hour. Producer Vikas Bahl was making a film with Anurag Kashyap not with me. Anurag insisted that since it was my idea, hed only cast me.

Have you suffered because of your straight talk?

I have made it on my own. I have worked with directors like Dibakar Banerjee, Anurag Kashyap and Navdeep Singh who are straightforward and honest too. If I were working with someone who played politics or had a strong standing in the industry and made the kind of films I acted in, then I too would have moved forward with them. In such a case, I would have to be careful with my words. Since I am working with simple, honest people, I can afford to be honest too. Whats there to be afraid of?

Why did you agree to a cameo?

You get to do a special appearance in a film only if you have done something in life. Its a privilege I have earned. When I heard the story, I understood why Anand L Rai wanted to cast me in the film. I have always maintained that if your role is good, then theres no harm in doing even a cameo. I even played a small part in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. I want the freedom to do one solo hero film and then be part of a three hero film as well. I want people to accept me in all kinds of roles.

The concept of Dev. D was yours. Why havent you come up with more such ideas?
I am working on another film based on my idea. A writer will make her directorial debut with that. I havent decided whether I should make the film under my banner (Forbidden Films). Right now, I am in a position where anyone will fund me. I wont be acting in this film. I want to remain behind the scenes. Actually, I have been doing that for years, and have never taken credit for it.

Chakravyuh

Have you ever been stalked by a female fan?

There are some fans who start shivering when they meet me. I find that weird. I talk to them and make them feel relaxed. I tell them I am a normal human being just like them. But most say, Hey we like your work, youre simple and natural. I am often told, Sir you have a lovely smile. We believed you to be a serious person. This is because of the cinema I do. That they respect me and are warm towards me is what makes me happy.

cropped up (laughs). If you ask me if I am involved with the production aspect of my next film, then my reply would be in the positive. But if you ask me whether I am the producer of the film, my reply would be in the negative.

(Laughs) Right now, I can only think of my girlfriend Preeti Desai (model). There is no one more beautiful than her. The worlds most beautiful woman is my girlfriend.

Can we infer that youll turn director one day?

I have never thought of becoming a director. But that doesnt mean I wont ever direct.

What makes Preeti different from others?

She is polite and down-to-earth. She is real. She has been working since the age of 17. She is straightforward. She doesnt play games. I like simplicity in a person. Its very difficult to find a beautiful girl whos also simple. If a girl is beautiful, it somehow goes to her head.

You were seen playing brother to the hilt at Esha Deols wedding.
We share that kind of a relationship. I was happy that she was getting married. Im emotional, though not the kind wholl start crying at a sisters wedding. Im glad she has found a the right man (businessman Bharat Takhtani) whos very good for her. n

dont play a certain part, someone else will. If the character was not required, it wouldnt have been in the film in the first place. Being a part of a film is something in itself.

Recently, your name was linked with Ranveer Singh. How much attention do you pay to these rumours?
Rumours are to be laughed at. The less you react to them, the better it is. If you react, then youre adding fuel to the fire. It then becomes a tennis match. It was even said that my parents were upset. But the fact is that these things dont affect anyone. Dad has been in this industry for 35 years. He knows what people are writing and why. He doesnt have to read the papers or magazines to get news about me. He knows his daughter very well.

With Akshay Kumar in Rowdy Rathore

At times, I lose my temper. But that happens rarely. I can control my weaknesses.

What upsets you?

When you are part of the industry you get used to many things. You get up in the morning; you read a few things about yourself in the newspaper. Here are people who dont know you at all but still write anything about you. One gets used to that. If Im praised for my work, my professionalism, then I feel happy about it.

IM NOT SURE WHETHER THESE TALKS ABOUT AKSHAY RECOMMENDING ME ARE TRUE OR NOT

But why do celebrities generally hide their love life?

Its a personal choice. If you are an actor then you are in the public glare. So if you can hide a few things about your life, its a good thing.

You have been paired opposite senior heroes like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn. Would you relate better to a mature partner in real life too?
(Laughs) I dont know how to answer your question. A mature man? No way. My on screen romances have nothing to do with my personal tastes. Id rather date someone of my age.

Actors are surrounded by sycophants. Doesnt it get difficult to differentiate between genuine praise and the fake?
I can gauge when someone heaps false praise. The people around me are those whom I have known for yearsmy friends, my family. I know they wont flatter me. And if I have gone wrong, they will point it out to me.

Apparently, Akshay Kumar has been recommending you for his films.
If your chemistry is appreciated with a co-star then filmmakers sign you together. Im always on time for my shoots and complete it on time. I dont create problems for my producers. This matters a lot in the industry. Thats why people want to sign me again and again. Im not sure whether these talks about Akshay recommending me are true or not.

Can we see you in a film where you will actually be the hero?
Definitely, why not? Only three films of mine have released so far. Lootera is perhaps such a film where the girls part is equal to the boys. That will perhaps be the beginning.

In most films, heroines are reduced to bit roles

I dont think so. A role, whether big or small, is work after all. If I

Kicking off a monthly column where non-filmi celebs talk movies and more. This month, Virat Kohli speaks to Raedita Tandan on Bollywood bombshells and his favourite films

Undoubtedly one of the most dazzling stars in the glittering galaxy of Indian batsmen, Virat Kohlis on-field aggression matches his flamboyance off it. He might be known for his destructive batting style and efficient fielding but away from cricket; this talented player is just another 24-year-old whos passionate about fast cars, trendy clothes and latest gadgets. But among his many passions, his love for the movies tops the list. So we, at Filmfare, got this young vice-captain of the Indian cricket team to talk about his admiration for films and everything related to it. Though he was in the midst of his practice for the 2012 T-20 World Cup (not to mention rejoicing over the fact that he was recently awarded the ODI Cricketer of the Year), Virats answers were as free-flowing as some of his exquisite cover drives. Enjoy!

BOLLYWOOD MUSIC ROCKS

CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

I have always been a fan of the Hindi movies and my earliest memories of films have to be of watching black and white movies with my family. As a kid, my favourite Hindi movie was Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Anyone who has seen the movie, will know why it was my favourite film. And its mainly because of this film that I idolised Aamir Khan as I was growing up. To date, I am a huge Aamir Khan fan. Among the three Khans Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman Aamir is my favourite. Not only is he a brilliant actor but he also adapts well to diverse roles.

KAREENA KAPOOR IS THE NO. 1 HEROINE. SHE BEATS KATRINA KAIF AND PRIYANKA CHOPRA IN THE RACE

What I love the most about the Hindi film industry is its music. It sets our cinema apart from the rest of the world. According to me, theres no better music in the world to dance to. I especially love Punjabi music. My favourite track right now is Tu mera hero from Desi Boyz. I can listen to the song on

like Angelina Jolie a lot but according to me, the sexiest Hollywood actress is Penelope Cruz. She is my secret celebrity crush.

FILMS & CRICKET

I have never thought about acting but my dream role in a film would be that of Iron Man, which the suave and dashing Robert Downey Jr portrays in the Hollywood series.

FAN MOMENTS

Bollywood has always had a fascination for cricket. Lagaan is by far the best Hindi film based on the sport.

CAREER IN FILMS

I dont really go to filmi events but I did meet Hrithik (Roshan), Salman (Khan) and a few others at Sachin paajis (Tendulkars) 100th century dinner, hosted by the Ambanis. It was a fun evening.

Quite a few Indian cricketers have tried their hand in films in the past. But I am not open to the idea of a career in Hindi films. Cricket is my one and only love. And I have no back up plans. Recently, there were rumours that Prabhu Sir (Prabhudeva) offered me a film while I was shooting for an ad film with him but those rumours are false. Yes, I did have a great experience shooting with him but the only thing he offered me were a few dance moves. However, if I actually had to pick an Indian cricketer, whod make for a great actor, Id choose Zaheer Khan. n

f her frank speak makes her controversys child, then the same candour helps her steer clear of them. Once dubbed the only man in the industry, the perky Preity Zinta is one actress whos much more than lip gloss and fluttering eyelashes. From actor to owner of an IPL cricket team to a producer, shes moved in and out of several avatars with ease. And to think that she once wanted to be a truck driver! Perhaps thats where her gusto to rough it out on bumpy tracks comes from. As she confides, its not been easy shooting her maiden production Ishkq In Paris in snow filled locations.

She looks slimmer than usual. Having shed 10 kilos in the past year. She attributes the loss to diet and exercise. But the diet plan went for a toss that rain soaked evening when hot samosas and cake were dished out from her kitchen. Wow samosas since the film is complete I can indulge myself, she smiles enjoying the treat. Excerpts Mukerji is also making a comeback. Its funny. I agree I was doing IPL (Indian Premier League) but Rani was very much around.

Has the attitude of the industry changed towards you now that you arent doing too many films?

There are ways to approach a person, you can request me. Ive always been open to the press. Im always ready to pose for them. But there has to be decorum, some discipline. I was at the top. I wanted to do

Initially, people at the board meeting had a different perception about me. They wondered what a beautiful actress was doing in sports. I was clueless about the business. But I involved myself in the game. I worked right from 8 am to 11 pm. I was obsessed with my team (Kings XI Punjab). Thats why I stopped doing films. In the four years since I have gone through enough ups and downs. My team lost. I had to fight a legal battle. People insinuated that the money invested in the IPL was not mine. I was depressed when my team was defeated at the match in Dharamshala. During that time I was with the Dalai Lama. He said Its okay. I replied, No, its not okay. I didnt play to lose. He said, Then you should play in your own field. I understood what his words meant. Thats why Ishkq In Paris (director Prem Raj) happened.

It has got nothing to do with balancing. My friendship with Salman is a decade old, right from Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega. We have seen enough ups and downs in our lives. Be it court cases or anything else, he has always stood by me . Even during the IPL he was ready to help me, be it emotional or financial support. Hes a dear friend. Hes an honest person. People have misunderstood him.

What kind of films would you now like to do?

With Salman in Ishqk In Paris

What was the most exciting part about Ishkq In Paris?

Everything was exciting and difficult at the same time as this was my first experience. Film production has always been about crisis management. When we went to Paris to shoot, the weather had broken the record of the past 65 years. We shot in -23 degrees. In minutes the place would get covered with snow. The train in which we were shooting collapsed. When we tried to shoot outside the museum and the airport there was a strike. Once, the set was blown away by a storm. The unit asked for a day off. That day I realised the difficulties producers face. As an actress I was only concerned about my hair, make-up, wardrobe and scenes.

Shekhar Kapur advised me, Never give your phone and alcohol bills to the production house. Ive followed this

I like doing sensible cinema. I started off with films like Dil Se, Kya Kehna, Sangharsh, Soldier... Ive never seen myself as an actor who is just hot . Also, Armaan was hard hitting, Heaven On Earth realistic and Hero and Veer Zaara memorable.

Yes, when we do quality work people dont like it. I rate my performance in Heaven On Earth my best so far. The film did good business in Canada. I was also nominated along with Hollywood actresses for this film, which I consider a big thing. Here people hardly talked about the film. According to them the film lacked songs and item numbers.

But your last few films failed at the boxoffice

How was the experience working with newcomer Rehan Malliek?

Rehan is a good actor. When you work with a newcomer you have to give him time and space. When I faced the camera for the first time in Dil Se I too had no knowledge of acting. Shah Rukh Khan helped me a lot.

You did an item song for Salman Khan in the film Mr And Mrs Khanna and now he has done a song for

Firstly, theres no shortcut to hard work. Secondly, you should compete only with yourself and not with anyone else. You need to improvise. Thirdly, you always need to prove to yourself. People will never notice the good you have done but will always point out the wrong. Therefore only consider those who matter to you. Fourthly, if youre successful in one area it doesnt mean youll excel in another too. You might have to put in extra effort.

What are the lessons youve learnt over the years?

I AM a confident person and love everything about myself. The path might seem difficult but I always believe in taking the right one. I can work happily for 25 hours without complaining one bit. I AM not a morning person. Also, I lack patience. After repeating something twice or thrice, I lose patience. I AM a good cook. I can do all girly things like embroidery and stitching. At the same time Im an outdoor person and love hiking. I AM insecure about my mother; she is the only one I have. I want to see her happy and in good health always. Whenever Im in a problem, my only concern is that she shouldnt come to know about my stress. Stupid things also make me insecure. Like what if I get a pimple on my nose the day I have an important meeting!

I shut myself in my room, scream loudly and cry it all out. In some time, Im fine.

Has the definition of love changed for you?

When I was younger I wondered what I wanted in love. Now I definitely know what I dont want. There should be respect in love otherwise that love is not for real. Only if there is respect will trust develop, which in return fosters understanding. If theres no respect then theres no future. Unconditional love exists only between a mother and her child.

Which was the most difficult phase in your life?

Difficult phases have come and gone. The first time was when I lost my father at 13. Then it was in 2010 when my team was expelled from the IPL.

What depresses you?

Whenever something in life is not on the right track depression automatically sets in. But I dont brood for long.

What kind of husband would a strong woman like you wish for?

Someone whos intelligent and someone who would be proud of my achievements. He should be confident as only a confident person can handle another confident person. I am a fun person and Id want my hubby to be same. I dont want a nag.

What inspired you to write a book on fake stories about celebrities?

My husband should be confident as only a confident person can handle another confident person. I am a fun person too... I dont want a nag

I got this idea from the book Accountability In Media. I used to write for the BBC. But they wanted accountability for the articles I wrote. I had to check and recheck the article and verify it with my signature. Nowadays people write anything about anyone. A lot of fake stories have been published about me. I ask the media to call me, Im always available. But dont give fake information. Once a story appeared that I had beaten a woman and consequently shed been admitted to the ICU. I announced a reward of a crore if anyone could prove it. I dont want my kids to read such cheap things about me. Thats why Ive collected all the fake stories about me and other celebrities too. The book is 50 per cent complete and will be published soon. It has stories related to films, business and the IPL. n

Then Ranbir mentions that there is a new hero on the horizon the writer! Sanjay Chouhan, who was in the audience, confides he couldnt help beaming. Sanjay Chouhan is the pen behind critically acclaimed films I Am Kalam (IAK), Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster (SBAG), and Paan Singh Tomar (PST). In fact, he even won the Best Story Award for I Am Kalam at the 57th Filmfare Awards. He was doubly honoured when the film won the National Award as well. Sanjay says, Even Shabana Azmi called up to congratulate me. Amitabh Bachchan too sent an SMS congratulating my effort. The writer has been around for the last nine years but it is now that his talent is being recognised. Earlier, it was difficult getting an appointment with people but not anymore. It seems my time has come. About how he began writing for I Am Kalam Sanjay shares, Ours is big country with a huge population but there are a few films for children. I told director Madhab Panda that I didnt want to make a film that gave sermons to children.

liquor and ice. After a while when I mustered courage and said Sir, he roared, What is this Sir? Call me hukum! It was scary. Sanjay continues, Later we went to a dhaba for dinner. When we returned, it was late. There was dead silence in the village. The doors were shut and the headlights of the jeep created long shadows. Chauhan sahibs thundering voice echoed in the village. I realised that I needed to quickly wrap up the interview and take back hukum to Gwalior. Few would know that the Delhibased Sanjay was a journalist before he became a writer in films. He even wrote a short script for a TV spot and later a couple of serials. Eventually, he became a full-time scriptwriter

About SBAG he says, I wondered how a sahib would be in todays times. His wife definitely wouldnt be a sati-savitri and that became the concept of the film. His collaboration with director Tigmanshu Dhulia started with PST but it was SBAG that released first. It was Tigmanshus idea to make a film on Paan Singh Tomar (a national steeplechase champion who represented India at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo). He had read a write-up on him and was inspired. But there wasnt much information on him except that he was in the army and that circumstances had turned him into a rebel. Incidentally, Paan Singh gained notoriety as a Chambal Valley dacoit when he resorted to dacoity after a land feud in his village. e continues, Paan Singh died in a police encounter in 1981. We traced his family. His son Sauram Singh is still alive. We also met the policemen who were involved in the encounter. Through them, we met other dacoits. Sanjay continues, In Chambal, there still are dynastic animosities. When we went to meet the dacoits, they thought we were from the rival groups. It took us a while to win their trust. We

He recalls an incident on the sets of Jahnu Baruas Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, I had major arguments with Anupam Kher. I was angry that he wanted to change the scene without keeping in mind the framework of the story and how these alterations would affect its flow. But it is Anupams greatness that he later understood my point of view. He said, Ill make the changes only if Sanjay is convinced. We then had a detailed discussion. between Sunny Deol and Irrfan Khan where there was something amiss. Then Sunny gave a suggestion and we made the necessary alteration. It enhanced the scene. These days most films are written with foreign locales as the backdrop, while Sanjays stories are set in the villages of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The backdrop is dependent on the story itself. My stories generally involve

the people residing in villages, who face severe problems in their daily lives. He adds, My next story, Hari Bhai Oscarwale (director Lovely Singh) is a story that needs to be shot in Los Angeles. Its the story of a 55-year-old Gujarati involved in theatre. When Hari bhai was 15, he had done a bit part in the Oscarwinning Gandhi. Now he wants to receive an Oscar as an actor. What happens when he reaches LA forms

the story. Sanjay is also writing another script for children where he sees Ranbir Kapoor or Hrithik Roshan in the main roles. Sanjay has given two hits with director Tigmanshu Dhulia Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster and Paan Singh Tomar. Id like to work with Tigmanshu in the future. People have huge expectations after PST. So were giving each other a break now. Presently, I want to finish writing Hari Bhai Oscarwale first. Sanjay believes that writers are enjoying more attention these days. Generally, a writer is not in a comparatively strong position. But when a film based on his script succeeds, he too gets in demand. It involves commerce. The writers position is changing and the importance of a good script is well understood now. People are paying attention to stories. Now foreign studios have opened shop here. So, people are forced to stop stealing ideas from DVDs. The value of an original story is being recognised. Sanjay narrates an incident with great pride, A few days ago a director told a producer, I want Sanjay Chouhan to write my script. The producer insisted that the script be written by the writer of Sahib, Biwi Aur Gangster. Thats when the director exclaimed that they were talking about the same person. Often people refer to writers by the names of their films. Thats a kind of praise too. For Sanjay, this is just a beginning. The writer now wants to turn director. From the pen to wielding the camera, it could be an interesting switch. We are waiting to applaud. n

RIGHT BROTHERS
Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt celebrate 25 years in showbiz. Kathika Kandpal catches up with the peddlers of dreams
One is a great storyteller, the other a wizard with numbers. One is instinctive, the other calculative. One is poetic, the other pragmatic. They are as different as fork and spoon, yet they come alive only in tandem. Brothers Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt have been making films for two and a half decades (from Daddy to Raaz 3) but to their credit, theyre still making films lapped up by GenNext. Together they helm one of the most fortuitous and prolific film companies Vishesh Films. Were probably one of the oldest film families. Our father (producer Nanabhai Bhatt) joined the film industry in 1928, says Mukesh pointing to a framed photograph of their father and mother (Shireen Mohammed Ali). What hallmarks their silver jubilee year is the arrival of the next generation of the Bhatts on the film scene Maheshs daughters Shaheen and Aalia and Mukeshs son Vishesh are all geared to make a splash. Over to the two whove managed to grab a bit of their sky...
Vishesh Films completes 25 years. What was the journey like?
Mahesh Bhatt: Though we come from a family of filmmakers, we realised we had to get our act together to kick away the wolf at the door. My father had made over a 100 films but this business is erratic. There are highs and lows. Raj Khoslaji gave me a job as a production manager. I was charismatic and could convince people that I could make films. Later, when I took to direction Mukesh, who is five years younger to me, became my assistant. In my 20s I gave my first four disastrous films (Sakat, Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain, Vishwasghaat and Naya Daur). As I entered my 30s, I made Arth (1982) and then my career took off. After the success of Naam (1986), Mukesh became secretary to Vinod Khanna and Smita Patil. But after Smitas demise, Mukesh wanted to make a film. Soon we launched Vishesh Films and made Kabzaa in 1986 (Vishesh is incidentally Mukeshs sons name whos debuting as a director with Murder 3). And we havent looked back ever since. Mukesh Bhatt: I have nothing poetic to say about our journey. As a producer one has to deal with only one thing crisis! For me its just been about coming out of one crisis and getting into another. But I have no regrets whatsoever. Its not the bank balance but the number of lives you have changed which eventually matters. Mahesh: We have no finishing point. Hence theres no sense of fatigue. Also, its not the man who invented the wheel whos a genius, but the one who invented the other three wheels. I stirred a fire in Mukesh. But he had the ability to take it forward. He had the eye for money and optimising core

strengths. It was his vision to give birth to a production house. Left to myself, Im incapable of fending for myself. I cant read contracts; I hit a blank if I see figures. Mukesh: Fortunately! (Laughs) Shekhar Kapur and JP Dutta say that they are envious of Mahesh (Bhatt saab) because he has me. will you keep yourself in fashion. In the early 2000s we came up with Raaz and Murder without top stars. Yes, we changed the product profile and we did what Hollywood greats did and made erotic thrillers. The worlds a fair place. No power on this earth can deny you what you rightfully deserve! We stood on the edge. At times it was isolating but our worst detractors conceded that we had created a small sky for ourselves. Mukesh: Initially, when Bhatt saab told me that wed be working with newcomers only, I was worried. Firstly, because he had given up direction and secondly there would Mahesh: Money is Mukeshs space. I trust my directors and try to whip up whatever is there in them. Murder 3 is completely Visheshs child. I insist he must resist my shadow because the past is dangerous for the present. If you want to double the rate of success, double your rate of failure. Failure gives you perspective. For me there is no winning post, you have to keep running. A full house at Gaiety which includes the masses and the classes is like a dip in the Ganga.

How do you view your relationship?

Mukesh: We are stitched together. We are Siamese twins. Long back I told someone, I could do without my wife but not without Bhatt saab. I said it innocently but I meant it. My wife got upset. But I was being honest. We are four sisters and two brothers and are closely bonded. Yet we are different. Like hes an atheist but I am a firm believer in God because my mother prayed all the time. Like I have inherited asthma from her but he Shaheen escaped it because he has our fathers genes.

Dont you miss direction Mahesh?

Mahesh: The joy of helping people create is more stimulating than just creating a film. All I can do is provide my insights. But it is the young who have kept us current. They dont even have to turn around and say thank you. We happen to be co-travellers in the journey to our individual destinations. Mukesh: Were the only company that doesnt make newcomers sign multiple film contracts. Normally a newcomer is bound by stringent, bonded labour like contracts. Theyre bound to that company for X number of years or films and have to give a cut to the company even from their endorsements. Thats obnoxious! Were not here to make money out of youngsters. Once the film is over they can fly out. Use us or misuse us,

Alia

Vishesh

What would you consider the turning point in your careers?

Mahesh: We made a new beginning in the new century. When I hung up my boots as a director (1999), I decided not to make films with stars. I see my delinking as a director as the end of one phase and the beginning of a new one. Only by realising that youre dated, you have sung your song and you need to make way for new talent,

be no stars to sell our films. Had he continued to direct, it wouldnt have been a problemwe had made Aashiqui (1990) with newcomers. But today I thank him. I tell my son Vishesh that success is nothing but living life on your own terms. I no longer have to go through the agony of standing outside a stars vanity van. Nothing can be more elevating. What we have earned is self-esteem, credibility and our identity.

weve no problem because we dont see ourselves going bankrupt. Those who are bankrupt might want to cling to people because they are insecure. We have the talent to spot talent, not many people have that. There are no great political insights or spiritual messages which are being distilled and served to the people. Its an audiovisual drug which is served to an audience clamouring for pleasure. We are pleasure peddlers. We are not giving any solutions to the problems of the human race. We are just numbing their pain for two and a half hours. They give us their money and their time. We respect that and give them a fairy tale. creative inputs. I am proud of my eldest daughter. Mukesh: Im happy that Pooja has managed to stand tall and not under the shadow of her uncle or her father. Id like Vishesh to move out too as also my nephew Mohit (Suri). We are here to give them strength not to handicap them.

Why the obsession with franchises?

Mahesh: Its not an obsession. Its a business strategy and its global. Mukesh: Franchises have a 30-40 per cent recall. Thats a lot. We are reviving Aashiqui 2 (director Mohit Suri) after 21 years. Writer Shagufta Rafique came up with a heartwrenching subject with music as its base. Murder 3 would be niche. The earlier one was single screen, massy and gory. My son Vishesh comes from a different mindset because he has lived abroad.

Mahesh, couldnt you have launched your daughter Aalia (Bhatt)?

Mahesh: Im not committed to create vehicles for my children. If they suit the story and cater to the economic well-being of the company, then we take them. Pooja was taken in Daddy (1989) because the story was about a 16-year-old helping her alcoholic father, not because she was my daughter. She wasnt there in Aashiqui but we did take her in Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin (1991). Mukesh: We are not making the kind of films that would cater to Aalia in terms of the genre. Mahesh: Shes lucky to get a break with Karan Johars Student Of The Year. Its a young film that suits her age. I am not a conduit through which my children will make an entry into the world of films. I never worked with my father.

Do you have arguments?

Mukesh: Highs and lows are a part of life. Mahesh: Life would be such a bore without them. Just imagine your magazine with only happy articles. That would be a boring read.

Any advice for the next gen Bhatts?

Mahesh: Im 63 and blazing like a volcano. So is Mukesh. Weve set high standards and achieving those wont be easy. But our children will only become successful if they make us obsolete. But they dont have to grovel at our feet. Mukesh: They have to blow down these two twin towers (pointing to themselves) to make a mark for themselves. They have to have the militant in them.

Your nephew Vikram Bhatt has mended his bridges once again with Vishesh Films...
Mahesh: Vikram chose to go away. Just because he was given a break by us, that doesnt mean hes a bonded labourer. He came back happier, like someone who has understood the value of his home. We didnt point a finger and say, Oh we told you so! Mukesh: What took him away was his own need. When he returned it was his need again.

How much of the work pressure do you take home?

Mahesh: Were not making the Sistine Chapel; were making a Hindi movie!

Pooja Bhatt is very much on her own...

Mahesh: Pooja (Bhatt) is selfsufficient, she is on her own, producing and directing films. She does consult Mukesh and I give my

What about Shaheen?

er recent portrayal of Kareena Kapoors mother in Bodyguard and newspaper reports of a troubled second marriage brought back to mind yesteryear actress Vidya Sinha who had a brief but interesting stint in Hindi films in the 70s and 80s. The early 70s saw the emergence of realistic cinema. And she played the girl-next-door with effortless ease, someone the average cinemagoer could identify with. Vidya usually portrayed meek and mild characters, so she took everyone by surprise when she stood arms akimbo, eyes blazing and screamed, Varna kya? Her co-star Sanjeev Kumar looked startled and the audience too. The chastened hero of Pati, Patni Aur Woh (1978) quietly murmured, Main thande paani se naha loonga. She made her debut in Basu Chatterjees Rajnigandha (1974). As a

young woman torn between two loves, she finally understands her true feelings. Though she moved on from middle-ofthe-road cinema to commercial movies with Rajesh Khanna and Sanjeev Kumar as her co-stars, Vidya never quite made it big. After 30 films spanning 12 years she called it quits to look after her daughter Jhanvi. Apart from the odd appearance on TV or a rare film, she all but disappeared. Happy maintaining a low profile, initially she laughs off the request for an interview, insisting she has nothing to say. But a little persuasion helps and I find myself sitting opposite her in her cozy drawing room in a Versova high rise, which she shares with Jhanvi. As we get chatting, the actress recalls her modelling days that eventually led her to films. I was Miss Bombay and modelled for several top brands. Basuda came across my

In fact, he helped her out during difficult scenes. And she was a big fan of Sanjeev Kumar at the time. Her face softens as she tells me, He was such a senior actor. It was wonderful working with Sanjeev Kumar. Almost like a dream come true. He would treat me like a baby and constantly make fun of me on the set. The roles he offered me were realistic. Totally different from the ones I essayed in full-on commercial films like Karm. A straightforward person herself, Vidya got along well with her co-artistes. She recalls how helpful and caring Shashi Kapoor was. Especially on outdoors hed make sure that the entire unit was comfortable, right down to the spot boy, she smiles. And she calls Shatrughan Sinha, whom she did several films with, a prankster. I was new in the filmi setup and totally at sea on my first day. When I asked him who the director was, he pointed at someone. Only when the shooting started and I heard someone else shout Roll camera did I realise hed been fooling me all the while, Vidya harks back.

hen there was the time Sanjeev Kumar and she were shooting for two different films (Alaap and Inkaar respectively) being made by the same producer at Mohan Studio. A common lunch table had been laid out. A vegetarian, she was steering clear of the nonvegetarian dishes when Sanjeev Kumar pointed out a dish to her and said, Try this. When she asked what it was, he said Chinese aloo.

I was suspicious about the shape but was told Chinese potatoes are weird in shape. Hesitantly, I bit into one, found it rubbery but since they insisted I had two pieces. Later, when I was in my make-up room, Haribhai (Sanjeev Kumar) came and asked me, So how was the aloo? When I said I didnt care for the Chinese variety, he revealed they were prawns. I promptly went to wash my mouth, she remembers. All that was so many years ago, its difficult to remember.

In an industry where the general belief is that once married, the heroine loses her fans, Vidya got married (1976) to Venkateshwar Iyer when she was barely a couple of films old. And went on to do 30-odd more films before eventually calling it a day. Her last film was Swayamvar (1980). Ask her why she chucked it all up and she confides, I was never serious about my career. When I started out, I wasnt sure how Id fare. If it worked fine, if not that was fine too. I never had the

burning ambition to reach the top. Eventually, I wanted to plan a family. Vidya has one daughter, 22-year-old Jhanvi, who after doing her Mass Media from Melbourne is now working with Big Pictures. Since Vidya wanted to take care of her baby herself, she never employed any ayah. But as the child grew and became independent, Vidya found time hanging on her hands, she was getting bored and felt herself sinking into a depression. Taking hold of herself, she made up her mind to do television. Admitting that work in TV serials is

hectic, she tells me it took her a while to get used to the mike hanging down her back. I was used to the boom mike in films and found this funny and somewhat irritating, she says making a face. Eventually, she started enjoying working in serials. She narrates, You get to meet so many people. When all of you are together for so many days, it turns into a family atmosphere. Basically a homebody, Vidya isnt much into parties or socialising. I like watching old movies and reading, she volunteers. A devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba, she religiously reads two chapters of his Sai Satcharita every day. n

ew homes have the Haji Ali dargah and the Mahalaxmi temple paying vigil. Bindus is one such along Mumbais privileged skyline. Inside, a sharp voice greets me from the room adjacent to the drawing room - Kaun aaya? Baitho baitho! it says repeatedly. After a while it sinks in that its Bindus African parrot playing host... till the veteran arrives.

Bindus key achievement was that despite her married status, she went on to become a sex symbol in a conservative industry. Her sizzling leg show, seductive dance numbers coupled with a voluptuous form won her the title of Raquel Welch in India. Mera naam hai Shabnam (Kati Patang) and Mona Darling (Zanjeer) were the other iconic sobriquets she picked up along the way. Till date shes paid a backhanded compliment in the innumerable Ajit jokes that continue to feature in comedy shows on television. Yes, the way Ajit saab said Mona Darling is widely mimicked, she smiles. She agrees that her sexappeal had a lot to do with her physicality. Eyes are important. My eye make-up would reflect in my light brown eyes. People thought I wore coloured contact lenses, she narrates. Being a Gujarati, her chaste Urdu comes as a surprise. My mother Jyotsna was a stage artiste. She was a Rajput brought up in Hyderabad. I picked up Urdu from her. Even Balraj Sahni once remarked on the sets of Do Raaste, Your talaffuz (pronunciation) is so pure. Youre like a statue, so beautiful! she shares.

Dad said, Youre my son. Look after the family after Im gone. After he passed away I took to modeling to support the family. I was 11 but I looked 16 as I was well-built, recalls the actor who also featured in documentaries till Mohan Kumar signed her for Anpadh (1962), in which she played Mala Sinhas daughter.

TeeN Bride
After this brief stint in the movies she went back to school. I was at the inbetween stage neither a child nor a young lady. But soon an adolescent Bindu met her future husband (businessman Champaklal Zhaveri, deals with outdoor advertising) and a romance ensued. He was my neighbour in Sonawala Terrace at Tardeo. We had a difference of five years between us. I didnt fall in love with him immediately. Nor did I give in easily. Maine unko bahut sataya (I troubled him a lot). Hed ask me out. Id give him a time but never turn up. I did this repeatedly. Naturally, hed be upset, but never showed it. Or else hed have lost me. I realised that it was not just lust or attraction on his part. We did face familial opposition but we were firm and eventually got married, says Bindu who became a bride at 16. He has been like a father figure since then.

Tinsel dreams took wing early in Bindus life. I watched my mother on stage. Her play Ladakvayo was a hit. But her father (Nanubhai Desai), a noted film producer, wanted her to be a doctor. We were eight of us, seven sisters and one brother (today a brother and a sister have passed away). I used to take part

in school plays and won prizes. My friends would suggest that I should act on screen. I too enjoyed the khayali pulav (dreams). I was a Vyjayanthimala fan. I loved her dance, her beauty. She was my role model. When her father fell ill, Bindu being the eldest was deemed to take charge.

At 17 she happened to meet director Raj Khosla at brother-in-law Laxmikants (of composer Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame who was married to Bindus sister) house. Khoslaji offered me a role saying, The character is the protagonist of my story but shes a vamp. I was a bit hesitant. He gave me 15 days to think it over. My husband said, Whats the need? But I thought whats the harm? It had stirred a longstanding dream in me. Bindu was soon called for an audition. I said the dialogue with confidence. Khoslaji right away said, Youre my Nilambari! Incidentally, that was the name of the shrewish character Bindu played in Do Raaste based on Chandrakant Kakodkars celebrated novel Nilambari. The title was changed to Do Raaste, because Khoslaji felt Nilambari sounded like a mythological film. Even as she was shooting for Do Raaste, Bindu signed Ittefaq, Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke (both in 1969) and Kati Patang (1970). Shakti Samanta offered me the role in Kati Patang on the condition that I should be able to dance. I rehearsed with Robert Master for three days. Also, I was inspired by Helenjis dances. She used to fill the screen; I admired her figure, her expressions, her dresses, her movements The Bharat Natyam and Kathak dancer did find film dancing a bit loud. But on the set

I let go of all inhibitions. As a cabaret dancer I couldnt wear a saree or salwar kameez. I had to wear glamorous costumes. But I took precautions. I wore skin-coloured nylon stitched to my blouse to cover the bare skin. The hit number Mera naam hai Shabnam in Kati Patang won her the endearment Shabbo and loads of fans. A spate of glamorous roles followed in films like Mere Jeevan Saathi, Dushman, Garam Masala, Raja Jani, Dharma and Joshilay (in the early 70s). I was particular about my diet and exercise.

I dont remember eating lunch on the sets ever. Id carry buttermilk, tomato/beetroot soup and fruits. Also, you cant dance on a full stomach. The tummy shows through your costume, she states. She recalls an intricate dance sequence she had to pull off during Haseenon Ka Devta (1971) for choreographer Hiralal. Masterji had flown in from Madras for rehearsals at five in the morning. He was a hard taskmaster and everyone trembled in front of him. He told his assistant Susheela, Amma ko steps sikhao!

But she herself slipped whilst teaching me. I got nervous and prayed, God please help me and did the steps without a cut. Masterji gave me Rs 100 as bakshish, she beams. Its not that she never wished to play the heroine but the dye was already cast. The stamp of a vamp remained with me. Since I began my career after marriage, I grabbed whatever came my way. I was earning both money and fame. Soon I forgot about being a heroine. I got as much fame as the heroine and surely some gaalis too! The gaalis were my awards. When writers wrote a story theyd just write my name instead of the characters. That was a compliment. Some fans didnt know I was married and wrote letters in blood saying I love you and Will you marry me? So popular had Bindu grown that often she stole the thunder from the heroine. Once I had worn a saree of the same colour worn by a lead actress. She wasnt pleased and the talk reached my ears. But no one dared to tell me anything as I also held my own. You should be confident about yourself. What has colour got to do with your acting? she asks. In a traditionalist industry a muchmarried Bindu dared to play a seductress in Imtihan and a nymphomaniac in Hawas (both in 1974). But she was guarded about not being exploited. Once I refused to do a certain movement with the camera at a low angle. It would have looked vulgar and the Censor Board would have cut it out. Remarkably, in 1973, she played diametrically opposite roles, that of the dons moll, Mona darling, in Zanjeer and the friend of a fading singer in Abhimaan, the latter being her first positive act. Hrishida (director Hrishikesh Mukherjee) said, When you make an entry, the viewers will expect mischief. But we will surprise them with the twist, she recalls.

WorldMags.net NOT WITHOUT HUBBY

Bindu credits her career to her supportive husband. It was with his consent that I worked. So there was peace at home. Even Jaya Bachchan once remarked, Youre very lucky. So did Yusuf saab (Dilip Kumar) with whom I worked in Dastaan (1972). He remarked, Mujhe tumse zyaada tumhare shauhar pasand hai (I like your husband more than you). When the wife is the breadwinner and the husband depends on her, thats when all the trouble starts. But my husband was a successful person in his own right. He could look after me. Years later, when we were shooting in Rishikesh for Ganga Ki Saugandh, the team would drive down to the Kwality restaurant in Dehradun. Wed sing and dance till 3 in the morning. Amitji loved listening to the late Mehdi Hasans ghazals. We even attended the maestros shows. Amitji, even in those days, had a great music system in his car. Once an editor of a glossy happened to ask her, How come youre not linked with your heroes? I retorted, Why not link my name with yours? He was taken aback and kept quiet, she shares. to mature roles in the 80s. Films like Hero, Biwi Ho To Aisi and Kishen Kanhaiya won her notice where she perfected the cruel mother-in-law/aunt act. In the following years films like Shola Aur Shabnam, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Main Hoon Na and more recently Om Shanti Om gave her the chance to show her comic flair. Life today for Bindu has hit a peaceful phase spending time with her sisters. I dont want to do TV shows as the pace is hectic. I enjoy watching my old films and travelling instead. Cinema is the backbone of Indian culture. Its the reason we believe things and people can be larger than life. Its the reason we believe love culminates in marriage. Its the reason we believe good wins over evil. Everything in an average Indians life revolves around his impressions of cinema. And what brought glamour and heroism in our lives is turning 100. Filmfare, which unfortunately is only 60, looks back at the brief history of cinema. No qualms in admitting that ours is an industry driven by its stars. Its their lives we want to emulate. Well celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema in 2013, but until then we bring you one star, every fortnight. This time its the Venus of Indian cinema - Madhubala. She was, and still is, considered the epitome of both stardom and beauty. There could be no celebration of cinema without Madhubala.

Telling someone that Madhubala was beautiful would be an understatement. Her beauty had the power to mend broken hearts. Dilip Kumar was nursing one in 1950. When he met Madhubala on the sets of Tarana, it was her mischievious smile and joie de vivre that made his heart whole again. Its also said, back when a young Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray was just a backstage hand in the movies, he was frustrated by the movie set madness. One day Madhubala I am very emotional. walked past him and Thackeray was so enchanted at the I have always sight of her beauty that he continued to work at Bombay lived my life Talkies for years. Madhubala saw both success and failure in her career. After she made a mark as a child actor Kidar Sharma offered her Neel Kamal alongside debutant Raj Kapoor. Consequently she signed many films with the then stars Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Premnath, Bharat Bhushan and Ashok Kumar but barring a few like Mahal (1949) and Tarana (1951) everything else failed. So much so that Madhubala was called box-office poison and was relegated to films like Lal Dupatta, Singaar and Desh Sewa. But resolute as she was, Madhubala bounced back with films like Badal, Sangdil, Mr & Mrs 55 and Howrah Bridge. By the time Mughal-E-Azam hit the screens in 1960, Madhubala was at the top of her game. Her last film to release was Jwala in 1971 with Sunil Dutt.

Theres a reason people continue to strive to catch a new glimpse of Madhubala. Its because even when she was alive, she was as rare as a blue moon. But on the rare occasions that Filmfare heard her speak, it was always about love, love and love.

Once I have finished work at the studio, I dont want to be Madhubala, the star. Im just a normal, average girl and only at home am I treated as such It is a fashion these days to say that love is merely a romantic attraction between a man and a woman. Silly modern customs and attitudes have led to such thinking If I marry, I shall give up my career, much though I love my work. But it will be difficult. No one in the world has any right to interfere with ones choice of a husband. I would marry only the man with whom I am very much in love Mine is a strange life. She was the most sought after actress in B-town. So much so, that when Frank Capra visited Bombay, all that he wanted to do was meet Madhubala. But her father Ataullah Khan wouldnt allow it. Just like he never allowed Madhubala to attend film parties, premieres or events. She didnt have a public life. Even Life magazine had to shoot Madhubala at her sprawling home. The one time that Madhubala did break free was when she attended the premiere of Insaniyat on Dilip Kumars arm. The rest of the way the shutterbugs had to settle with her on set appearances.

FAMILY TIES
The sole reason why Madhubala worked in films was because she was the bread winner of her household. In the late 40s, when Madhubala first made a mark as a lead actress, Suraiya was top of the marquee. Madhubala was able to bag more than a

dozen films was because she signed for ` 7000 versus Suraiyas charge of ` 45,000. A few years later, Madhubala was paid lakhs for a film and all that money went to her father. Madhubala continued watching Hollywood films and educating herself in acting and English, so that her sisters could enjoy a happy life. So much so that she had to part from Dilip Kumar because he wanted her to marry him and severe ties with her father and family. When Madhubala retired at 27, owing to her critical heart condition, she found the support of Kishore Kumar. She married him in 1960 and from there on it was a downhill battle where she struggled to survive till 1969. All through it was Kishore Kumar who supported Madhubala, singing at stage shows and using the money earned to cover her medical expenses.

ON THE SETS
The film sets were the only place you could spot Madhubala. Her father didnt allow her to participate in outdoor shooting locations. Most of her films were shot in Bombay studios. Naturally these film shoots were a public magnet. Her fans, the media and even the crme de la crme of society all used to throng wherever she was shooting. One such story describes how the ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan and a then frequent visitor to Mumbai, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto used to spend hours on the Mughal-e-Azam set just to sit and stare at Madhubalas pretty face.

Amitabh is awesome
Amitabh Bachchan who turned 70 on October 11, once said, Everyone must accept that we will age and aging is not always flattering. His own success contradicts the notion. Amitabh Bachchan may be growing old but he has shown no signs of slowing down and has indeed been the perfect example of aging gracefully. In an era starkly different from his time, the 70s and 80s, Bachchan still holds a firm place in the industry and commands a sense of power and respect that is unmatched. All accolades to this great actor are well deserved.

No melody in music
80s completed the tragedy by being the most musically bankrupt decade. And then Nadeem-Shravan arrived like a breath of fresh air. Many thanks for the interview of Shravan Rathod (Sept 26, 2012). In the 1980s we had given up all hope of listening to melody in Hindi films, after the fabulous music of the golden 50s and 60s degenerated in the 70s. The

Geet Mala, in which, in the early 90s, at least half of the songs every week were NadeemShravan melodies. Its sad that their blast was short lived and that they lost steam. The murder of Gulshan Kumar in 1997 drove the final nail in the coffin, with Nadeem exiting the country. Trends in this world generally arrive in circles. Just as melody returned to Hindi films, after a lull, in the 90s we hope it will again make a comeback in the future, putting a brake on this era of DJ-oriented, fast-paced music, which has ample rhythm, but no soul.

Barfi!

Being a diehard Kareena Kapoor fan, I was bubbling with excitement when I took my seat in the theatre. By the time we got done with the commercials and previews, I just couldnt wait anymore. And then finally,

Silence please

The silent but loudly clear theme of Barfi! reminds me of a film that released 25 years ago. Pushpak was ably directed by veteran Singeetham Srinivas Rao and with excellent performances by Kamal Haasan, Tinnu Anand and Amala. It was a film that eschewed dialogue in toto and marked a bold attempt in filmmaking. Todays films have loud and cacophonous dialogue, at times bordering on the obscene and full of double entendre. We can do better than dish out such an onslaught of sight and sound. Films like Pushpak and Barfi! are a testament.

Filmfare should do better

I think Filmfare is wasting its precious cover space for movie promotions. If you are promoting Ajab Ghazabb Love just because the hero, Jackky Bhagnani is the son of a money making producer, then I demand that you should also give covers to all those films that stand to win awards abroad. Films like Chittagong should be a priority. Talented actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni and Pawan Malthora are never featured on the Filmfare cover. If you promote one, you should be fair and promote all.

Rekha Its the 10th month of 2012 and Filmfare has still not published a photo shoot with Rekha. Its been more than two years since the diva has been featured in your magazine. Please feature her celebrating her recent birthday in October. Please dont disappoint me and millions of her fans.

Kareena Kapoor the movie started and I realised something had gone horribly wrong. At first, I couldnt put my finger on it but then, after a few more scenes, I realised watching something decidedly pedestrian. It pains me to say this because I love Kareena so much, but she deserved better. The beginning of Heroine had me excited for a while, but when the reason for it was explained a little into the movie, it seemed unnecessarily intense. Kareenas character graph was just dead straight, no growth, no layers, no depth. Madhur Bhandarkar needs to come up with a new structural skeleton for his movies. Page 3, Fashion and Corporate all follow the same template and frankly, its getting a little blah.

Constructive criticism

Ekta on top

I used to look forward to reading reviews, because it made my choice of whether to watch a film or not easier. It is indeed a well established fact that box-office collections are in no way related to the acerbic criticism or the cloying encomiums showered on a film. The decision, therefore, lies with the audience. My grouse is why nowadays such appreciation / abuses are written longer and more voluminous than the film script itself. Do the reviewers think that the readers are waiting to read a thesis or antithesis on the movies they watch? Reviewing a creative product can never escape the bane of subjectivity. But, what we expect from the present day critics is balanced presentation without bias, fear or favour.

Ekta Kapoor is a bold businesswoman. Not many could have survived in the mans world which is Bollywood. She knows what sells and how to sell it. In contrast to her run-of-the-mill daily soaps, the movies she makes are ultra forward and

The interview touched upon a similar aspect where Runa Laila clarified that it was the media that made up the rivalry between Lata Mangeshkar and her.

I loved the article Beyond Borders with Runa Laila (Oct 10, 2012). Thanks a ton. I remember the MNS claiming that they would not let the show air

@preety_zsweet: Kareena Kapoor looks poised & elegant. She looks gorgeous throughout the movie. Halkat Jawani obviously makes us move & flutter. @SinghRowdysingh: Herione is a waste of time. @kareena_786: Loved Heroine! Some people dont like being shown reality, thats the reason some silly critics had to run the movie down. Kareena was outstanding. @LadyReenz: Heroine was bland and boring... really rubbish version of Fashion. @iShaharyar_MD: Heroine may not be the best film but its worth a watch because of the one and only Kareena Kapoor. She deserves all awards. @iprincyangel: Kareena is a combo of beauty and talent. She is excellent in Heroine and brought Mahi to life. She is in her own league.

Kareena Kapoor in Heroine

Heroine

Kareena shines, film fails

When a director like Madhur Bhandarkar wields the megaphone for a project like Heroine you expect nothing short of spectacular. Sadly, Heroine doesnt quite live up to its exaggerated hype. What we get is a baked leftover from Page 3, Fashion and even the more recent The Dirty Picture. Madhur churns too many sub plots in his narrative backed by melodrama. Randeep Hooda leaves a mark in his sketchy role and so does Ranvir Shorey as the arrogant art film director. Yesteryear dancing queen Helen makes an impression in a small role. But the film truly belongs to its heroine - Kareena Kapoor. She raises the bar of the average product. Her portions depicting vulnerability and insecurity are particularly outstanding. Kapoor proves her courage in turning a clichd gloomy role into something thats near superlative. Dr K Karthik Rao, Chennai

Lost Glory
The film promises to trace the journey of a superstar but ends up tracing the journey of a failed actress. There is nothing new or sensational that one gets to see in the film. A lot of the content is derived from Bhandarkars previous films Page 3 and Fashion. A lesbian fling and an MMS clip are just there to make the film sensational but fails there too. The film follows a straight linear narrative with few twists. There is not much style in the narration and the music is a big letdown. The supporting cast is not fleshed out. Kareena Kapoor is the hero of the film. She looks glamorous in each shot and tries her best to make this film worthwhile with her spectacular performance. Harprit Dhanjal, Mumbai

Nothing New
Simply put, Heroine is Fashion 2. The story is lacklustre and Madhur Bhandarkar has packed in all the clichd characters. Madhur has made this film glossy and whilst doing so has forgotten that people want hard

hitting movies from him which show the naked truth. Randeep Hooda is good as the cricketer who is besotted with the heroine Kareena Kapoor. Divya Dutta is believable as the image builder. Arjun Rampal is correctly cast as the married superstar. Snide references are made to fading heroines who buy IPL teams, attend dance shows as judges and to heroines who crave National Awards. Heroine is a great showcase for Kareenas talent but not a great movie. The film doesnt do justice to Kareenas powerhouse performance. Wish the script had as much power as Bebos acting. She is only thing which makes the film slightly bearable. This movie seems to have been made in a hurry to meet business deadlines ruining the story and screenplay. Santosh Mohan Joshi, Sangli

Depressing
For a film that had high expectations, Heroine is bogged down by the weak script and screenplay. Heroine promises to be a fine film initially but falters when Bhandarkar

takes the dark and depressing route. It shows the industry in a very poor light considering Madhur himself is from the industry. Coming down to the performances Arjun Rampal, Randeep Hooda, Sanjay Suri, Ranvir Shorey, Shahana Goswami and Divya Dutta have small roles but leave their mark. But the film totally belongs to Kareena who is the heart and soul of the film. On the whole, Madhurs Heroine is a stale and a depressing version of The Dirty Picture. R C Parsa, Secunderabad

@sachin_dictator: An eye-opener for those who believe too much in God. @shankhayan100: Oh My God! is the best film of the year, terrific acts and a message with humour. Just awesome. @skiwave: Oh My God! has a strong message. Brilliant performance by Paresh Rawal @iRMaddy: Oh My God! has a beautiful message for the people. It shows that if you believe in God he will believe in you.

Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in OMG!

OMG! Oh My God!
An average affair
Based on the Gujarati play Kanji Viruddh Kanji, OMG! has a strong storyline. Paresh Rawal plays Kanjibhai, an atheist Gujarati businessman who loses his livelihood because of an earthquake and decides to sue God for his financial ruin. And thats how the God v/s Kanjibhai subject comes in. The movie is good in parts and makes you chuckle occasionally. The Paresh Rawal-Akshay Kumar chemistry seen in earlier films is completely lacking here. Akshay Kumars role seems to be like an extended cameo as Krishna and his introduction scene on a bike falls flat thanks to the tacky graphics. The dozen godmen make you grin at times and among all, the only familiar face is Mithun Chakraborty. It is Paresh Rawal who carries the entire film on his shoulders and

makes it watchable with his wit and humour in place. The film seems to veer away from the original topic and becomes more about fake godmen than about the existence of God. Though the film brings out its divine message it lacks finesse. Vidya Prakash, Thane

In a country like India where rituals and religious practices are blindly followed, OMG! will surely offend people following it rigorously as were we at some point. Bradley Fernandes, Panjim

Divine tunes

Satire at its best Oh my Seldom do we get to watch goodness an entertaining satire in Hindi
cinema. The film is set on Kanjibhai v/s God premise. There are neither caked up actresses nor any unwanted songs or toilet humour. The commercialisation of festivals is rightly brought out. As far as the performances are concerned, it is Paresh Rawals best performance till date in the comedy genre. Kanjilal aka Paresh Rawals arguments and counter-questions are well thought out. Akshay pulls up a great God act and no one can miss the showstealer Mithun Chakraborty as the godman. Govind Namdeo is another aggressive godman but he overdoes his part. Truly a divine comedy. Shekhar Rajput, Jaipur I never thought Id come across something like this in a cinema hall. OMG! lives up to its title. The film acts as an eye-opener and brings out the naked truth about the business of religion in our country. Kanjibhai v/s God in a rollercoaster of court cases brings out thought provoking questions. The director Umesh Shukla does justice to the script. Mithun plays the godman with ease. Prabhu Deva and Sonakshi Sinha set the feet tapping wildly with their Go Govinda number. To sum up, OMG! is a worthy watch for the atheists as well as the believers. At the end of the film, it will surely leave you exclaiming Oh my goodness! Shikha Shruti, Delhi

Unlike the other so called comedy films, this one doesnt expect you to leave your brains behind. This adaptation of a Gujarati play chooses the right cast. Paresh Rawal as Kanjibhai is superb and leaves his Baburao act behind. The debate against idol worship, blind superstitions, money mismanagement in religious charitable trusts in the film acts as an eye opener. Akshay Kumar shocks us with his performance and his last dud Joker is forgiven. The best part was the parallel drawn to the Mahabharata towards the end, with Krishna (Akshay) replaying his role as the legendary charioteer-advisor for the warrior - Arjun then, Kanji now.

many more medals at the Olympics. What do you think? Rishi Vij, Nagpur Very true. With more encouragement, support and exposure we would manage to win many more medals in sports other than the now stale cricket. Why is it that being humble, tolerant and forgiving are taken as signs of cowardice? Jaideep Sarkar, Kolkata Being humble, tolerant and forgiving are signs of power of the unspoken words, of maturity, sensibility and intelligence, which takes time for people to realise. Annaji Hazare seems to be a saint-socio-activist who has left the battle half-way disheartened and disillusioned because of the unhelpful attitude of the political fraternity. Do you foresee his comeback in the near future strategically wiser and stronger? RD Chandra on email He may be disheartened and disillusioned but hell surely bounce back. He may be down but hes certainly not out. A husband and wife were walking on a street. The husband was ahead of the wife so the wife called out to him and said, Biwi ke aage aur ghode ke peechhe nahi chalna chahiye. What does one do when the wife is riding a horse? Rahul Sinha, Patna Simply ride along with your wife. You must have encountered failure at least once in your life. What did you learn from it? Priyank Gupta, Mahoba Who hasnt encountered failure in life at least once and some like me have done so many times. Failure teaches you to try harder to reach your goal. If you succeed after failure, it makes you a leader or at least a guide. What are your tips to improve the education and health systems in India? Arafat Alam, New Delhi Utmost priority and awareness for both systems is of utmost importance. Is silence golden? Dipak Talukdar, Kolkata It sure is as silence speaks volumes, something screaming and shouting can never do. Havent you heard, When a whisper can be heard theres no need to shout from the rooftops?

rapid fire

What is true of contemporary India, criminalisation of politics or politicisation of crime? Krittika Suchanti, Kolkata Unfortunately both. To quote the genius Shiv Khera, Why do we let those be the guardians of our country when we would not like them to be the guardians of our children? We already cant differentiate between the two. Its time to wake up and smell the coffee. Actors or politicians, who

fools the common man more? Dayanand Kudari, Pune Politicians with their false promises in scoring votes for themselves are in many ways like actors. An actor only portrays his role on the screen as part of his contract / craft / job, with only one purpose that is to entertain and to get fooled ultimately. If even one tenth of the amount spent on cricket had been spent on other sports, we would have won

India is emerging as a dangerous country for women, with rapes, kidnappings, honour killings, female foeticide and the brutal, dehumanising acid attacks. How can we make India safe for women? Rupesh Bhardwaj, Delhi To begin with we need to implement stringent laws for all these issues. Women should be made aware of their legal rights and we also require an extremely strong womens police force to tackle these issues efficiently. My wife insists she is the best cook. How do I burst her myth? Jaidev Chulani, Pune Dont ever make the mistake of bursting her myth if you want her to remain part of your life. Why do we wake up in the middle of every sweet dream and never during a nightmare? C V Aravind, Bangalore Because it seems all good things have a short shelf life while bad things have a much longer one. Do we need more actors like Aamir Khan who can change the way our nation thinks like the way he did with his show Satyamev Jayate? Priyanka Moitra, 24 Parganas Very sad but true. We need the help of film stars or other celebrities to create awareness and put our message across.

1ST PRIZE
What is the striking similarity between Mamata Banerjee and Mulayam Singh Yadav? Mithu Sen, Mumbai Lack of credibility. They say something, do something else, oppose in the morning and support in the evening.

2ND PRIZE
Whats the difference between a wife and a secretary? Brajendra Singh, New Delhi The secretary works to bring you on top whereas the wife hardly works. However, both take care of your professional and some personal needs. The wife is taken for granted but the secretary is not as there is the fear that she might leave. Its the case of the forbidden fruit. How do you see Indias political and economic situation in your crystal ball? Ruma Gope Sharma, New Delhi The crystal ball is very sexy and pretty but the picture in it not so much though Id like it to be very different. (Feature co-ordinated by MEERA JOSHI)

Once more with love

80
years! His wit, his energy, belie his age. One cant think of Yash Chopra as an octogenarian. Hes so much clued into the times that he seemingly belongs to the current era and not to some bygone age. Hes peerless as a director. His contribution to the annals of Hindi cinema is immense. There would be a yawning gap the size of the Grand Canyon in the history of Indian cinema if you take Yash Chopras name out of it. Hes always been a rebel, with a distinct style and vision that broke away from the constraints of prevailing trends. It also empowered him to carve his own niche away from the giant shadow of his brother BR Chopra. Dhool Ka Phool (1959), his first film itself, dealt with the taboo subject of unwed motherhood, something he touched upon again in Kabhi Kabhie (1976) and Silsila (1981) too. Yashji knows that life cant be clinically divided into black and white and his fascination with the intermingling greys has given us poignant, enigmatic films showcasing the complexity of human relationships. Daag (1973),

WorldMags.net

Yash Chopra

his breakaway film, with which he established his own banner, the iconic Yash Raj Films, talked of bigamy and its repercussions in a humane way. Silsila brought out the hidden truth that love outside marriage does exist and that you do have to pay a price for it. Lamhe

(1991), perhaps his most radical film, championed the fact that love has no age limits and showcased the bond between a teenager and a man who ideally should have been her father figure. In Darr (1993), he told us what happens when love crosses the bounds of sanity.

The director has been credited with starting the trend of multi-starrers with Waqt (1965). Apart from directing films for his brother BR Chopras BR Films and his own banner, Yash Chopra also successfully directed films like Deewaar (1975) and Trishul (1978) two of the most iconic Amitabh Bachchan films for producer Gulshan Rai, thus establishing the fact that he wasnt just a sultan of romance. It can be argued that the filmmaker was instrumental in bringing to light different aspects of Bachchan. In Deewaar, he was the anti-hero who loved his mother, in Kabhi Kabhie, the romantic whos disillusioned by love, in Silsila, as a man who flirts with an extra marital affair, in Kala Patthar (1979), as a coward who gets a second chance at finding courage. After a hiatus of eight years, the legend has returned to form once more with Jab Tak Hai Jaan. The promos have quickened our appetite for this grand romance. While we are happy, nay, delirious that hes made a film again, we are also sad that its going to be his last directorial effort. We want him to go on and on and on... Jab tak hai jaan... n
