0 Introduction With increasing demand for electricity due to the growing population, inertial fusion energy is currently being described as the future for generating electricity. This is due to its efficiency in terms of its production of electricity and its environmental impact towards the society. Inertial Fusion is relatively new, and the aim of this report is to analyse and discuss the different potential factors it can have towards the society and meeting the peoples needs of electricity. This report will primarily focus towards the NIF fusion plant in the United States. The NIF facility is currently one of the fusion plants that are in the testing stages, allowing one to analyze the technology and its progression. With the NIF in mind, the report will be separated into six main sections. First, the shielding of the Fusion reactor will be discussed, and why the shield plays an important role into creating a successful fusion reactor. After the shielding, the generation of the laser beam and its efficiency will be introduced, stating the different types of lasers and what types of laser would allow for successful fusion. With the lasers and efficiency introduced, the filament will then be examined and how it affects the fusion process. Such factors, including its shape and size are also taken into consideration. With the main components in mind, the report will then focus on its economic factors. This section will also take a brief comparison with the cost of magnetic fusion reactor and todays power plants. Finally, the report will then discuss the environmental factors relating the Inertial Fusion, such as waste and the environmental impacts towards the society. With different research from highly creditable reports, this report will help solidify why inertial fusion energy is considered as the future production of electricity and an engineering challenge.
