Supervised Work Experience (SWE)

This is a one academic semester (20 weeks) placement. The placement of students occurs after careful
assessment by staff and the prospective employer. While it is recognised that each individual placement will have
its own constraints it is intended that the supervised work experience should follow, as closely as possible, a
standard programme in which students are placed under the active guidance and supervision of a Chartered
Engineer or an experienced Technician Engineer (Supervisor). A suitable training programme is prepared, in
collaboration with the Organisation Supervisors that will allow students to:
• Follow an induction programme in which they are introduced to the range of activities of the establishment and
are briefed on the roles they are to undertake and on safety and company regulations.
• Work in a number of sections/departments in order to appreciate their interdependence and interaction.
• Contribute to a significant project or development.

Common Skills
Common skills are developed all the way through the programme units, supervised work experience (SWE),
extra curricula activities (ECA) and relevant experiences outside ITB. Following are the common skills that will be
monitored as part of common skills development:
• Self management and development.
• Working with and relating to others.
• Communicating.
• Managing tasks and solving problems.
• Applying numeracy.
• Applying Technology.
• Applying design and creativity.
