1. The stresses at a point on steel were found to be xx = 15 ksi (T), yy = 30 ksi (C), and xy = 25 ksi. Using E = 30,000 ksi and G = 12,000 ksi, determine the strains xx , yy , zz , xy and the stress zz assuming (a) the point is in a state of plane stress. (b) the point is in a state of plane strain. 2. (a) A 2 dimensional plane stress study of nonhomogeneous material behavior in which Poissons ratio remains constant but Youngs modulus varies as E (x) = Eo eax , where Eo and a are constants. For this case with zero body forces, show that the governing Airy stress function equation is given by 4 2a 2 + x 2 a2 2 a2 (1 + ) 2 =0 y What will happen if a=0? (b) In the absence of body forces, verify that the following stresses xx =kxy, yy =kx, zz = kx(1+y) , 1 xy =- ky 2 , yz =xz =0, where k is a constant satisfy the plane strain, stress formulation relations. 2 3. (a) Derive 2D Naviers equations (displacement based formulation) for plane strain 0 x 0 y (b) A displacement eld is given by ux = + A Cy and uy = + B + Cy satises above derived E E equation. Please comment on the coecients A, B and C. 4. A thin rectangular plate of unit thickness is loaded along the edge y = +d by a linearly varying distributed load of intensity w = px with corresponding equilibrating shears along the vertical edges at x = 0 and l. As a solution to the stress analysis problem an Airy stress function is proposed, where = p 5(x3 l2 x)(y + d)2 (y 2d) 3yx(y 2 d2 )2 120d3
