FCAC Class Schedule - Fall 2013

(Exception: Call clay instructors directly to schedule.) Sign up early and pay two weeks before classes begin. Mail in checks or bring payment to the Art Center. Checks should be made payable to the Fountain City Art Center or FCAC. You will receive a full reimbursement if a class or workshop is cancelled by the instructor or by the Art Center. Prices listed indicate member/nonmember of the Art Center. Materials lists are available for classes and workshops when applicable. Gift certificates can be purchased for all classes and workshops.

Oct. 16 Nov. 20 Dec. 4 Jan. 22 Beginner to Intermediate Watercolor, Instructor Rob White; $90/$105, 6wks.; adults & youth 14 yrs. and up. Students work on individualized projects, their choice of subject matter. Monday mornings 9:30 AM-12:30 PM: Sept.30 Nov. 4 Nov. 11 Dec. 16 Jan. 6 Feb. 17 (Holiday: Jan. 20, MLK Day) Intermediate to Advanced Watercolor, Instructor Mary Secrist; $90/$105; 6wks., instructor requests adults. Thursday evenings 6-9 PM: Aug.29 Oct. 3 Oct. 10 Nov. 14 Nov. 21 Dec. 12 & Jan. 10, 17, 24 (no class TDay, Nov. 28) Wonderful World of Watercolor, Intermediate to advanced level adult students; instructed by Mary Baumgartner (971-4097). Interested students need to call Mary for the questionnaire that she asks new students to fill out. Class lasts 8 wks; $125/$145; Tuesdays 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM or Saturdays 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM. 1. CLAY
Basic Hand Building with Clay, Instructor Penny Berridge: 4 wks; basic techniques will be covered: coil, pinch, and slab. $135/$155; adults and youth; materials, tools, and firing included. Students may enroll even after a class has started. Minimum two students; maximum 4 students. Available for youth, 8 years of age and up, and adult beginners. Please call the Center to schedule a class, or call Penny at 851-8560. Her schedule is relatively flexible. Introduction to Throwing Clay, Using the Wheel, Instructor Roger Bench (705-4683); $155/$175; 5 weeks, adults & youth 8 yrs. & up. Minimum 2 students; maximum 3 students. Call the instructor to schedule a 5 wk. class. Roger is available for classes either Monday or Tuesday evenings from 6-8 PM. Small Figure Sculpting, Instructor Amy Hand; $175/$200; 5 weeks, Tuesdays, 10 AM to 1 PM. Materials are included. Learn to make several small sculpted figures in a variety of poses. Students will have the option to glaze and fire or to paint figures. Excellent follow up to Amys class in bust sculptures.

3. OIL PAINTING
Oil Painting, any skill level, instructed by Aurora Harrison-Bull, 6wks., $90/$105; Wed. 9:30 AM-12:30 PM ; Thurs. 9:30 AM-12:30 PM & Thurs 1:30 PM-4:30 PM. 4. MIXED MEDIA
Collage and Decorative Paper: Offered by Doris Prichard for four wks. This class will cover design, making decorative papers from tissue and other paper, surface treatments, image transfer, and collage techniques. Media used will include watercolors, acrylics, and inks. A supply list will be available at the Art Center in early March. The class will be on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 PM 3:30 PM. Next session TBA. Cost: $90/$105

2. WATERCOLOR
Individualized Watercolor Instruction, Instructor Kate McCullough. Cost of this 6 wks. class is $95/$105. Students will work on projects of their own choosing and at their own pace with

5. DRAWING
Basic Drawing: This 6 weeks course, offered by Charles Chico Osten, is either an excellent refresher for most painting students or

excellent for those who have never practiced or learned drawing fundamentals such as design and composition, perspective, drawing techniques, shading, etc. You will need a large drawing pad, good kneaded and white pearl erasers, and several soft graphite pencils. The class will be held on Wednesday mornings, 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, next session TBA. Cost: $90/$105. Perspective Drawing: This 6 wks. course, offered by Elaine Flaherty, is designed to develop the ability of students to draw objects in the correct perspective and proportion. It is highly recommended for ALL art students. Students will explore formal perspective in order for them to achieve the techniques necessary for success not only in drawing projects, but also in paintings. No experience is necessary for this class. Cost: $90/$105. Tuesdays, 1:00 PM 3:30 PM. (Next session TBA when we have enough interest.) Excellent follow up class for Chico Ostens Basic Drawing.

Classical Guitar Class 1: Instructor, Andy LeGrand. Ages 16 and older. 6 week course, Wednesdays at 8:00 PM. $120/ 6 weeks. The classical guitar class is a great way to learn easy instrumental music and many of the elements of music. Several pieces are taught in the class. Class 1 is an introduction to notation, melody, rhythm and scales. Students learn to read music and play guitar. The class limit is 15 students with two instructors. A method book is required (not provided), additional music is provided by instructor. WORKSHOPS:
Fused Dichroic Glass Jewelry: Instructor Penny Berridge (8518560); two 2 ? hour lessons, $80/$90, materials included; arrange a time and day by calling the instructor directly: 851-8560; must have at least two students for a class. Bookmaking: Bob Meadows, instructor. Christmas Ornament Books and Boxes, Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, 10 AM 4 PM. Make several miniature books, boxes, and similar items that can hold gifts or just be the gift. Rookie Bookies are welcome! $55/65. Bring scissors, a ruler, a cutting mat, a pencil, and a utility or Xacto knife. All other materials will be supplied. Pastel Landscape Workshop: Instructor Paul DeMarrais; Saturday, 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM; $100/$115, Saturday, date TBA in Spring. Bring a basic set of soft pastels. Paul will bring the paper and samples of both his handmade soft pastels and his creamy, easy to use oil pastels. Not Your Grandmas Macrame: Instructor Jim Gentry; next date TBA when enough interest develops; 10 AM 4 PM; $70/$80. Create a two-color bracelet using the basic knots in the age-old craft of Macrame (knotting). Class will include review and practice of basic knots essential for the craft. Expect to finish the bracelet with two colors of cotton cord; focal beads, will be incorporated to illustrate use of accent/color in Macrame design. Provided materials: Macrame, Weekend Crafter, Lark Press; knotting board, T pins, cord and beads, printed instructions/handout. Limit: 10 students; adults & youth 14 & up. Leather Working Workshops: Instructor: Diane Corey Small Tote Bag, 2-day workshop. Cost: $115/$130, materials included. Held on Tuesday, from 10 AM to 4 PM each day. Date TBAwhen enough interest develops. In preparing the small tote, students will punch holes into prepared leather pieces, and decorate/paint/draw on them the first day. The second day, students will construct the bag by hand stitching. Intermediate Precious Metal Clay Workshops: Instructor, Denae Oglesby. Adults; youth ages 14 and up. PMC Mold Making and Construction Intermediate Two Day Workshop: Wednesday and Thursday, January 29 and 30, 2013 . Cost including materials:$110/$120 (See handout at the Art Center for complete details.) PMC 3-D Jewelry Class - Intermediate. Instructor: Denae Oglesby. 6. PORTRAIT PAINTING (See also worksops, March 16,


2013) Portrait Painting in Any Medium: This six week class is offered by Charles Chico Osten. Students should bring in photos of the desired portrait subject(s) and their choice of color media, (such as watercolors, oils, acrylics, pastels, oil pastels, pastels, colored pencils), and paper or canvas as appropriate for the media chosen. If a student needs practice in the underlining portrait drawing technique, Chico will be happy to instruct those fundamentals as well. Instructions will be individualized for each students needs. Classes will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 PM 4:30 PM; cost is $90/$105. Oct. 9 - Nov. 1; Nov. 20 Jan 15. No Classes: Nov. 27, Dec. 25, Jan. 1.)

$115/$120, materials included; 6:30-9:00 PM, Wednesdays, Sept. 18 Oct. 23. This is a class for any level of student, experienced bookies or bookie rookies! Bring a pencil, a ruler, a craft or Xacto knife, scissors, and a cutting mat.

9. Introduction to Art: Instructor Christine Harness; 6


weeks;$90/$105; bring a large pad of drawing paper, a variety of soft graphite pencils, some good erasers, and a folder for handouts. Other materials may be required as the class progresses into color theory. Christine will be teaching adults, and even youth 14 and up, the basics in drawing, including 2 point perspective and composition. After the drawing basics, she will go on to instruct color theory and application, demonstrating the use of various color media: acrylic, watercolor, colored pencils, and oils. Date TBA.

10. MUSIC:
Folk Guitar Class 1: Instructor, Andy LeGrand. Ages 16 and older. 6 week course, Tuesdays at 7:30 PM. $120 / 6 weeks. The folk guitar class is a great way to learn standard folk tunes and some of the elements of music. Several songs are taught in the class.
