Overall Goal of Lesson: Students will be able to analyze a poem and synthesize its meaning with various other stories that have been read in class.

Instructional Objectives: Students will participate in a class-wide seminar in which they will conduct a poetry analysis in order to reach a deeper meaning of other stories that have been read in class. Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) & ELPS: 110.31 English Language Arts and Reading, English 1 2- Reading comprehension of literary text/ theme and genre A-analyze how the genre of text with similar themes shape meaning 3- Reading comprehension of literary text/ poetry 24- Listening and speaking/ listening A- listen responsively to a speaker by taking notes that summarize, synthesize or high light the speakers ideas 25- Listening and speaking/ speaking Key Vocabulary: Poem Imagery Theme Metaphor Simile Symbolism Personification Repetition Alliteration

Higher Order Questions: What do these poems mean to you? How do these poems relate to Oedipus Rex and To Kill a Mockingbird? What do you see when you look at your reflection in the mirror? Student Activities: (Keep in mind the following: Scaffolding, Independent or Cooperative activities, Groupings, Reading, Writing, Listening, Hands-On/Minds-On, Connections to previous knowledge, etc Reading- Students will read two poems in class: Mirror and Tell All the Truth Cooperative- Class-wide discussion/seminar Scaffolding- Teacher will prompt students with questions during the seminar Independent Practice- Reading and analyzing the poem Tell All the Truth on their own Writing- Students will be asked to write a 5-8 line analysis of Tell All the Truth Listening- Teacher will read each poem out loud the first time Connections to previous knowledge- Students will relate the poems to stories read in class Modifications/ELL Strategies Scaffolding during poetry analysis Questions given out with poems to discuss Anticipatory Activity for Lesson: Bell ringer- students will take 1 minute to look into their reflection with a mirror they were asked to bring to class. They will then write down one word in their journals to summarize what they see when they look at themselves.

Have students write a 5-8 line analysis on the poem Tell All the Truth and how it relates to Oedipus and To Kill a Mockingbird Have students volunteer to read what they came up with Closure activity Homework reminders Modeling: Teacher will show students some words circled in their own poem and explain what they mean Guided Practice: Questions at the end of the poem will serve as a guide for discussion topics Independent Practice: Students will analyze and write about Tell All the Truth on their own Lesson Closure: Students will turn to their neighbor and tell one truth and one lie and their neighbor will have to guess which one it true and which one is a lie Assessment Methods/Strategies: The 5-8 line poetry analysis will be taken up as a daily grade
