Title of Experience/Artifact: River Ridge Wellness Day Experience Leadership Convention Date Experience Completed: River Ridge Wellness

Day Spring 2013 Leadership Convention February 2013 Artifact Description: For the River Ridge Wellness Day experience, I have included a variety of artifacts. This experience dealt with grant writing, a presentation on the importance of movement to the elementary school staff at the River Ridge school district, lesson planning and teaching created lessons at the actual wellness day. We were able to write and obtain a grant that allowed us to hold a wellness day at the River Ridge elementary school (4K-4th grade), as well as provide them with MOVbands throughout a two week span. The presentation directed towards the staff also explained the importance of brain break activities and using both hemispheres of the brain in all education classrooms, not just physical education. Lesson plans were created and developed throughout this entire planning process. The River Ridge faculty gave us ideas and revisions that allowed us to further enhance our instruction. Lesson plan topics included yoga, anti-bullying, nutrition, fit deck, and getting to win-win. To complete the River Ridge PACCE Project, the seminar class went to the River Ridge school district and held our wellness day. Students were introduced to the MOVbands and our lesson plans were carried out. During the month of February in 2013, the Community Leadership Alliance of Southwest Wisconsin came to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to participate in team building activities and the high ropes course. I led a variety of activities to this group of individuals. I have included the Community Leadership Conference Outline, as well as pictures taken during this experience. Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment: I believe these artifacts align best with Standard Ten: Collaboration; Teachers are Connected With Other Teachers and the Community. The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and well-being and acts with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner. These artifacts both align best with this standard because I worked without an outside school district and community group, creating a wellness day and team building activities for each to partake in. The River Ridge Wellness Day artifacts demonstrate competency in the designated standard by allowing me to work with both the students and staff of the school district in teaching them the importance of movement. This was taught through presentations, and then measured through the MOVbands themselves. The lessons taught and incorporated in the wellness day helped facilitate students learning by teaching them healthy choices, stress relieving activities, and non-bullying skills/characteristics. When working with the Community Leadership Alliance of Southwest Wisconsin, I led and worked with the leaders of southwest Wisconsin, enhancing their team building skills as well as facilitated learning for both the participants and myself. I gained experience leading group activities to individuals older than myself, connecting myself to their own leadership practices.

UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions Alignment: I believe these artifacts align with KSD4.c. Engages Students in Learning; The candidate has the ability to engage students in the learning process by linking appropriate content, based upon suitable instructional materials and resources, to students knowledge and experience, being certain that all students are cognitively engaged in the activities/assignments and that the students actively contribute to the content design. Instruction is highly coherent and appropriately paced for all students and allows reflection and closure as appropriate. The River ridge wellness day aligns with this KSD because the lessons we created and implemented throughout the wellness day engaged the students physical, emotionally, and cognitively while facilitating their learning. When teaching lessons, modifications were made to instruction methods to accommodate for the different aged students. For example; we taught a different yoga plan for the K-2nd grade and the 3-5th grade students. After each lesson was complete, students were able to reflect on their learning experience. The second KSD that best aligns with this artifact is KSD 4.f. Shows Professionalism: The candidate has the ability to participate professionally in staff decision-making and be highly proactive in serving students, working to assure that all students, particularly those traditionally underserved, have opportunity for success in school. This artifacts aligns with the designated KSD by professionalism shown through the factuality presentation to the River Ridge elementary school staff, as well as the leadership and professionalism shown when leading all team building activities at the leadership convention. Other KSD alignments include: KSD4.e: Grows and Develops Professionally KSD4.d: Contributes to the School and District What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience: From these experiences, I learned a variety of concepts. I learned how to apply grant writing to a real situation, the process of continuously adapting lesson plans to meet everyones needs, the overall process of being completely in-charge of students while implementing instruction and that confidence is key, especially when working with age groups that you arent very familiar in working with. I learned that working with a school district is very beneficial, as it allows you to teach your beliefs (the importance of movement). However, working with a school district can also be challenging because it requires direct communication and professionalism to ensure everyones needs and wants are met. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience/artifact: As a result of the River Ridge Wellness Day, I learned that writing grants to obtain extras is a very beneficial component to any school district. Incorporating the MOVbands to the River Ridge Wellness Day provided excitement for the students, an incentive to keep moving for both the students and staff, and a tracking device to visually see how much movement takes place within ones self in a given day. Being able to write a grant to obtain technology, or any type of equipment, will overall impact my students learning in a positive way and allow me the opportunity to differentiate my learning instruction.
