What is VANET?

VANET :- Vehicular Ad-hoc Networking Ad-hoc Networks

Type of Wireless LAN Builds Spontaneously No Base station to coordinate nodes Nodes coordinates amongst themselves Provides communication between Vehicles Provides communication between Vehicle and Nearby fixed equipment

VANET

What is a VANET (Vehicular Ad hoc NETwork)?

Roadside base station

Emergency event

Inter-vehicle communications Vehicle-to-roadside communications

Communication: typically over the Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) (5.9 GHz) Example of protocol: IEEE 802.11p

COMPONENTS
A

GPS navigation system Microwave radar that can detect objects at distance as far as 200m A computer center, which will provide data processing, computing and storage A wireless transceiver, which provides standard communication for VANET A unique ID, such as an electronic license plate

Motivation for VANET

Increase safety

Hundreds of thousands of people are killed world-wide due to road accidents yearly.
Many more are injured. Congestion/traffic jams cost time and fuel.

Traffic optimization

Both these problems can be solved or mitigated by giving timely information to the drivers

VANET applications

Elecronic Toll Collection

Electronic Toll Collection(ETC)

14

Each vehicle can pay the toll electronically when it passes through a Toll Collection Point (a special RSU) without stopping. The Toll Collection Point will scan the Electrical License Plate at the OBU of the vehicle, and issue a receipt message to the vehicle, including the amount of the toll, the time and the location of the Toll Collection Point.

CONVENIENCE APPLICATION

Relay congestion information

15

Hop-by-hop message forwarding Other vehicles can choose alternate routes

COMMERCIAL APPLICATION

COMMUNICATION

18

DSRC-dedicated short range communication

o
o o

Divided into 10Mhz wide channel

channel 178 is the control channel which is restricted to safety communication The extreme two channels are reserved for accidents avoidance application and public safety communication

Rest for safety and non safety applications

INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION USING

VANET 19

Vehicles be made intelligent enough to guide their drivers in situations like traffic congestion and accidents Providing intelligence means loading them with sensors which will be controlled by telematics box inside the car The box would communicate with the driver and will be its guide

Intelligent Transport System has a future potential in terms of rich set of application that it can provide to its customer

Vehicle to vehicle infrastructure communication

20

LIMITATIONS
Radar

21

cannot detect vehicles that are not in direct line of sight. Both GPS and radar have a tolerance that needs to be considered. Increased transmission range would increase probability of packet collision.

CONTD

22

System becomes weak in cases where there is only one way traffic or less traffic density. Since a unique ID is used for each vehicle, privacy is at risk

CONCLUSION

23

VANET is definitely something to lookout for in the future. A lot of theoretical work has been put into realizing these networks and few experiments has been performed to validate this theory as cost of setting up this architecture is high, but more such efforts can be expected in near future. A successful vehicular network will open up a plethora of services to a huge number of audience which will turn out to be life saving as well as fun
