Class: Stage 2/Year 4

Date: 28.10.13

Time: 11:30 12:30pm

KLA: Science/Literacy

Rationale: Students will continue their unit of work on life cycles through planting their own seeds to grow enabling the students to witness a life cycle of a plant.

Objectives: - For students to work together to create an experiment with the seeds, investigating the beginnings of a plant life cycle.

Outcomes/Indicators: LT S1.3: Identifies and describes ways in which living things grow and change. Measures a records, over a four week period, the length of bean plants using informal units. ST2-10LW: Describes that living things have life cycles, can be distinguished from non-living things and grouped, based on their observable features. EN2-8B: Identifies and compares different kinds of texts when reading and viewing and shows an understanding of purpose, audience and subject matter Context: - Students will begin the lesson, re-capping over what they learnt yesterday and the life cycles of plants. - They will then move to their desks in groups of 4 to create their plant in a cd case. Materials/Resources: - 5 x cd cases - soil - seeds - newspaper - masking tape - gloves - water - watering cans - Instructions on the Interactive Whiteboard

Experience: *** Before the lesson, you will need to set out the materials needed on the tables for each group to use. - Students begin the lesson on the floor talking about the life cycle of the plant and their drawings they created yesterday. Explain to the students they will be working in groups to plant a seed into a cd case. - Using the cd case allows for students to view how the seed grows, roots forming in the soil and the plant growing from the seed. - Using instructions from: http://www.artprojectsforkids.org/2012/09/grass-in-cd-case.html on the interactive whiteboard (IWB), work as a class on creating their plant in a cd case. The class will move through the instructions step by step as a whole class. - When the students have finished putting their cd plant together, place the cd cases in an area where they will receive the most light. - To conclude the lesson, bring the students back to the floor to discuss the lesson. What did the students find difficult about the process? How long do they think it will take for the seed to bud? Take some estimations. *** Note: The hinges of the CD case should be at the top. That way you can stand them up and dirt wont fall out. Also this leaves a nice hole at the top for watering the plants with droppers. Plant your bean high in the soil. If you plant it toward the bottom the roots will grow out the bottom! Support: While reading out instructions to the class, have an example up the front for students to see each step also. Extend: Encourage students to think about the best positioning for the seed to be placed. Will it grow in a different direction if placed differently? Encourage students to estimate how long it will take to grow a certain height.

Evaluation: - Were children able to follow instructions to create the cd plant?
