Objective(s) Assessment

Materials and Resources: Weekly Spelling List Interactive Whiteboard 3x5 Index Cards Dice Rainbow Roll and Write Handouts Paper Colored Markers, colored pencils, or crayons Every week we have a new list of spelling words. So, in Lesson Introduction order to help you learn the words for this week, I have decided to change things up! After we review this weeks words, we are going to do a few fun activities. (Rainbow Roll and Write and Memory Match) Procedure 1. Review this weeks spelling list. 2. Post the list on the Interactive Whiteboard so that all students can see the spelling words. 3. Divide the class into groups. This works better with smaller groups. They will get more repetition if they do not have to wait to take turns. 4. Give out Rainbow Roll and Write Handouts to each student. Give one dice per group. 5. Rainbow Roll rules Each member of the group will take a turn and roll the dice. Each number on the dice corresponds to a specific color. The group then writes the spelling word in that specific color, twice on the handout. Have the next member in the group roll and continue. Continue this cycle until

EDEL 441 (2) O.DuRant all spelling words have been recorded on the handout. (*Remind students to use their best handwriting, so that they may use this when studying for their spelling test.) 6. After the Rainbow Roll and Write handout is complete, have them start working on the matching game. 7. Each group will be given index cards (one index card per spelling word) and colored pencils/markers/crayons. 8. Memory Match The idea of this game is to make as many matches as possible. Have the students write down their spelling words on each card. Flip them over so each card is blank on top, word side down. Then, the students will take turns to flip two cards, to make a match. If a match is not made, then they must flip both cards back over. If a match is made, then that same person can try again to make a second match. In order to make a match the words must have either a similar prefix or a similar suffix. (For example: Hose and Nose would make a match because they have the same suffix, -se.) Continue this until all words have been matched. The player with the most matches made, wins! ***Depending on your spelling list, you may need to add a few words to make sure each word has a match so that there are no cards left at the end of the game without matches. Lesson Closure After every group is finished, review the spelling words only. (Do not include any added words used for the matching game.) Ask them questions to see if they know which words have the same prefix or the same suffix. (For example: What could be a match for hose? Nose? Why?)
