Lit 1: Literatures of the Philippines

DESCRIPTION: This course is a study of Philippine literature in


Spanish (written by Filipinos), English, Filipino and
other regional languages.

CREDIT: 3 units

Course Objectives:

In this course, the student is expected:

1. To acquire a broad intellectual and cultural horizon in

a. the discovery of the roots of distinctive cultural and


personal identity as expressed or reflected in classic world
literature; and

b. the exploration of the timeless issues that have preoccupied


humanity throughout the ages and across the great
civilizations of the world.

2. To develop a commitment to nationalism balanced by a sense of


nationalism by becoming familiar with the great literary pieces
that are the cornerstone of the human imagination across cultures
and throughout time, and seeing all these from the vantage point
of human experience, thereby understanding better the Filipino
self in the process.
3. To develop the capacity for independent, creative and critical
thinking in the process of making connections between the
contemporary human situation and human experience across time.

4. To develop his ability to integrate and/or adapt the knowledge


and skills acquired from the various disciplines in the analysis of
various literary texts on various subjects and forms.
