Worked Examples

MM3AET (Aerodynamics)

1. Consider a thin, symmetric finite-span wing with an aspect ratio of 8. Calculate the lift coefficient and induced drag coefficient for the wing when it is at the angle of attack of 5.

2. An airplane with a mass of 20,000 kg flies at a speed of 175 m/s at 5000 m altitude. If the rectangular wing of 3-m chord length has a symmetric aerofoil at 2.5 angle of attack, estimate the span, the aspect ratio and the induced drag coefficient of the wing.

3. A human-powered aeroplane has a wing span of 29 m with an averaged chord length of 2.3 m. The total mass of the plane including that of the pilot is 95 kg and the drag coefficient of the wing is 0.05. It has been confirmed that a pilot can deliver horsepower to propel the plane. Here, the density of air is 1.225 kg/m3, 1 hp = 745.7 W and 1 knot = 0.515 m/s. (a) (b) (c) Assuming that the flow over the wing is two-dimensional, estimate the cruise speed to be attained. What is the corresponding lift coefficient? Obtain the power required to achieve a speed of 15 knots.

4. An executive jet has a wing with an aspect ratio of 9.96. The zero-lift angle of attack is -2 and the lift slope of the (two-dimensional) aerofoil section is 0.1 per degree. Calculate the angle of attack at the cruise condition if the lift coefficient of the wing is 0.21.
