What is an African Safari?

As a group you and your peers will research about what an African Safari is and where it can be found. You will be given one class day to research about these topics. Step One: Use the following websites/videos to gather information about an African Safari: http://www.eyesonafrica.net/Articles/safari-history.htm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oe_oGVngefI http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/safari Step Two: Research the types of places where a Safari is found: http://www.eyesonafrica.net/african-safari-map.htm Step Three: You and your group will create a map of African, showing all of the different places where a Safari is found. You will be provided construction paper, scissors, crayons, and many other tools. Step Four: Once you and your group have created the map of Africa, you will then turn it in to your teacher and proceed to the next task (What are the Types of Animals?).

What are the Types of Animals?

STEP 1: Watch Youtube video (Safari Animals (for kids)) Think about what animal you want to read more about. There is an animal called the Gazelle; you may NOT chose that animal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=renh2H2MWzI STEP 2: Come up to the teacher, and tell her what animal you have chosen. Once an animal is gone, it can not be picked again. STEP 3: Once your animal is chosen, go to the link(s) below that corresponds with your animal. Cheetahs: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/animals/cheetah.html Elephants: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/animals/elephant.html Giraffe: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/animals/giraffe.html Hippo: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/animals/hippopotamus.html Lion: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/animals/lion.html Rhino: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/animals/rhinoceros.html Zebra: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/animals/zebra.html If the animal you picked was a Lion, Zebra, Elephant, or Giraffe: Read section titled What are African Animals http://sciencewithme.com/learn-about-safari-animals/ STEP 4: Write down five to ten facts about your chosen animal. You will need a total of five facts for your presentation STEP 5: Proceed to the Habitat task

Habitats
Step 1: Before beginning this assignment, brainstorm with your group about what you think a habitat is. A habitat is a special place where a plant or animal lives. Just like you have a home or place to live, so do animals and plants. When we talk about an animals or a plants home, it is more like a neighborhood than a house. An animal needs five things to survive in its habitat: food, water, shelter, air and a place to raise its young. Step 2: Now that we know what habitats are, you will each be given a box of animal crackers and pictures of different habitats. Using your knowledge of the basic needs and what each animal requires try to pair the correct animal with the right habitat. Step 3: Once you are done matching the animal with their habitat, talk to the person sitting next to you and discuss why you put certain animals with certain habitats.

Presentation
Once you have completed your research discovering the types of animals that live in the safari and the types of habitats the animals live in, you and your group will share your findings with the class about the animal you selected. To complete this process you will need the following materials: Poster board Animal pictures Scissors Glue Markers

Steps:
1. Working as a group, you will title your poster board with the name of the animal you selected. 2. Print images of your animal from the websites that you reviewed, then cut out and glue them to your poster board. 3. You may also draw additional pictures about your animal. 4. Include 5 facts about your animal and its habitat on your poster. 5. When your poster is complete, your group will present it to the class. 6. Each group member will read one of your 5 facts about your animal to the class.
