Soil and Water Essay Soil to Spoon by Ryan Richardson

Everyday we consume food and have no clue where is came from or who helped us get it. The Soil to Spoon concept explains where, how, and who our food that we eat everyday comes from each day. We always see a wide variety of products in our local grocery store, but where does it come from? It comes from our farmers, soil ,water ,sunlight and the factories. Farmers play a major role in our community and society. Mans first profession was farming. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, The first farmer was the first man. All historic nobility rests on the possession and use of land. Farmers have to work vigorously to make sure the soil is in tip top shape, all the crops are fresh, tend to the soil to make sure it is healthy and also keep the pest out of the crops, make sure they receive enough water and nutrition. Farming looks mighty easy when your looking at it through a buyers prospective or a thousand miles from the corn field . In reality, they put forth a major contribution. Two Most Important things a farmer needs is soil and water to start their crops. Farmers might want to grow veggies, tomatoes, carrots , fruit, or any other food. Soil is the platform. It does so many different things for us such as Provides a platform for our houses and roads, filters and stores most of our drinking water, and provides habitat for our pants and animals. Mostly its the substrate in which our food grows in. There are many different types. Soil Types are usually distinguished between the different textures. The four most common types are: sand, silt, loam, and clay. Sandy

soil are the finniest types, with loose particles. Clay soil is the most compact and heavy. Without soil couldn't grow things. Soil is required to produce the major crops that we depend on for so much of our food. Since sandy soils have very loose particles, they have a high water permeability but they do not retain water for a long period of time. Clay soils on the other hand have very low permeability. Loam soils have medium permeability and absorption, and silt soils has low permeability. When determining water absorption, consider two factors: permeability, how easily soil is penetrated with water and retention , how well it holds water. Without water nothing will be able to grow in the soil. Sunlight is the last piece of the puzzle. After the farmer has got his soil, water and planted his crops , they need sunlight to grow .They need the sunlight to complete the process of photosynthesis which they make food out of . When your crops have grown and looking healthy, the farmers cut them , pack them up and send them out to factories. There, they can them, freeze them or ship them out to stores mainly grocery stories like Wal-Mart and Publix. After, we consumers buy the produce and take them to our respective making it to our spoon. houses where we cook them , thus
