nd grade Materials: PowerPoint with song and dance routine. 12 plastic bugs some insects and some spiders. Number each bug with a sharpie or a paint of some sort. 1 paper labeled with 1-12 on the side for each student. Optional magnifying glasses for each student. Objectives: Curricular Area (Science) Know: Students should know the difference between insects and spiders. They should know several characteristics that describe insects and bugs based on there T- chart from a following lesson. Be able to: Students should be able to figure out the different types of bugs scattered around the classroom. They should be able to observe the bugs and write their observations down on their papers. Appreciate: They should be able to classify each bug as an insect or a spider by the end of the lesson.

Music and/or Movement Know: Students should know where the head, thorax, abdomen, antenna, and compound eyes are located on their bodies compared to an insects body. Be able to: Students should be able to point to where the head, thorax, abdomen, antenna, and compound eyes are.

Appreciate: They should be able to sing the bug song and do the dance to help them remember the different parts of an insect.

The students should already know the main differences of insects and spiders. The students should be used to doing small song and dance routines in class and therefore will be comfortable with this procedure. 2. There should be a way for a PowerPoint to be set up in class for the students. This power point will have the song and dance instructions written and pictorially to help students with special needs or visual learners. The classroom should also be set up so there is some space for the students to move around a bit. The students should also be placed far enough apart from one another so that they cant hit one another with their arms. After the song and dance routine we will

need to spread out plastic bugs around the classroom for the following activity. The plastic bugs need to have a number written or painted on the bottom of them. 3. The song and dance will be the main attention grabber and warm up. The students will be asked to stand up and stretch slightly. We will then go through the song and dance routine before the actual science lesson/activity. 4. Step by step: a. State to the students, Does everyone remember the song that we learned the other day about insects? Good! Today we are going to learn the dance that goes to that song. During this time turn on the power point and have the students stand and space out. Ok everyone we need to stand up and spread your arms out so that youre not touching anyone. b. Go through the power point of an insect. This should have a couple pictures of insects with diagrams of where the head, thorax, abdomen, antenna, eyes, and legs are. NOTE while going through the PowerPoint point to where this would be located on your body and have the students copy it. c. Next state, Ok now that we have seen some pictures of insects we are going to learn a dance to help us remember what a insect is. Ready?! Ok d. First read the lyrics to the students and have them do the movements as you read them. i. Head Place hands on the top of head ii. Thorax Place hands on chest iii. Abdomen Place hands on belly iv. 6 legs wave arms by your side and wiggle your arms and body v. Compound Eyes point to eyes vi. Antennae hold both pointer fingers up on the top of your head and wiggle them. e. After going through the lyrics and going through the movements we can sing the song together now. NOTE sing to the tune of Head shoulders knees and toes Head, thorax, abdomen, and six legs. Head thorax abdomen and six legs. Two antennae compound eyes. Head, thorax, abdomen, and six legs. f. After the students sing this song through at least once you can let them sit down. NOTE You can sing the song through more than once depending on your students. g. Have the students each take a numbered piece of paper. Then allow them to roam around the classroom finding the different insects and spiders. Instruct them to write out what each bug is on their numbered paper. Each bug should be a spider or an insect and have a spider painted or written on the bottom. h. After all the students have found each bug allow them to return to their seats. We can then have a whole classroom discussion about what they found and which bugs are spiders and which are insects. i. This concludes the lesson portion.

Assessment: Curricular Area (Science) Students should be able to know what body parts make insects and spiders different. By filling out the paper it will determine if they can classify each bug based on physical characteristics. The students should know that bugs can be put into small sub sections. Based on how the paper is filled out will determine if they understand we are labeling things insects and spiders not just bugs.

Music and/or Movement Students should be able to sing and move to the bug song as a group. Each student should be participating in this group activity. Each student should be able to sing the bug song all the way through with minimal mistakes without the words on the power point. They should be able to remember them from the previous lesson before hand.
