Vocabulary & Terms: Emphasis, Contrast & Value, Negative & Positive Space, Repetition & Variation What is a Zentangle? A Zentangle is an abstract drawing created by using repetitive patterns. It is usually structured within a certain shape. Drawing a Zentangle is entertaining, relaxing, and a great way to express yourself creatively. For more information about the Zentangle process, go to www.Zentangle.com Instructions: 1. In your Question Question Journals, brainstorm different symbols you could use as the outline or frame of your Zentangle. 2. Trace your photograph in pencil, paying attention to negative and positive spaces. 3. Choose at least 5 patterns from your design matrix to use in your Zentangle. Be prepared to tell me how you will use these patterns to create emphasis in your piece. 4. Fill in your Zentangle with your patterns. Think about how to create emphasis around your face when filling in your design. You should use at least 8 patterns in your completed image. At least 5 must be your personally meaningful symbols. 5. When your Zentangle is complete, go over everything with black marker. 6. Student will participate in a mid-project critique to get feedback from their peers. 7. Create emphasis in your piece using the neon highlighters.

8. Complete the rubric and paperclip it to your finished work. Hand everything in.

Project Requirements: Students will create a Zentangle self-portrait using patterns created from personally meaningful symbols they have created. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of emphasis through their composition and use of highlighter colors. Students will use at least eight different patterns in their drawing, and at least five must come from their symbol matrix. Brainstorm & Questions: What is a symbol? How do you use emphasis in real life? What is the importance of play? What does Zen mean? Can symbols be a secret (Do other people need to immediately recognize what your symbol means, or can it be abstract/non-representational?) Closure: Each class, students will have 5-10 minutes to close with a review of the daily objectives and by responding to a prompt for their question/question journal. Students will also AMAQ Ask Me A Question in their journals which I respond to for the next class. Continuation Ideas, some suggestions: Students who enjoy this project may want to create their own zentangles at home. Student suggestions for continuation ideas include: Making one huge collaborative zentangle, Making a full body sized zentangle using appropriate symbols for each body part, Using neon colors, Doing the project with clay, Making stained glass zentagles. ASSESSMENT FORMATIVE: ZENTANGLE PORTRAIT CHECK LIST We only have four more classes to complete this project! Do I have at least 5 personally meaningful symbols sketched out to use in the portrait? Did I trace my face and shoulders all the way to the edges of the paper? Did I neatly outline my tracing with the sharpie? Did I lightly sketch a design in the background that creates emphasis around my face? (Check with teacher before beginning next step!) STOP! THINK! Will all my symbols be drawn the same size? Think about the scale and size of your symbols. How will I use value to create emphasis around the face? Make sure the face does not get lost!

MID-CRITIQUE (2nd or 3rd class): A critique gives the artist helpful feedback about their unfinished or finished work of art. A critique is a discussion between the artist (YOU), the class, and a Question Master. The Question Master leads the discussion between the artist & the class. Both you & the class have a chance to answer each prompt. Let one person speak at a time. Listen to each other & encourage each other! You will get 3 5 minutes to be the featured artist. You must take notes in your Question Question Journal about how the class responded to your piece, at least three comments. You can also use this guideline to reflect on your work independently. 1. I Created: What did the artist create? (In this case, it is a Zentangle self portrait) 2. I See: What does everyone see in this artwork? What symbols? One person speaks at a time. 3. I Think: What does the class think is interesting or confusing about this artwork? How did the artist create emphasis? 4. I Wonder: (Ask the artist first) Is there anything you would change or that makes you wonder? 5. I Love: What do you like about this artwork? Did you enjoy making this artwork?
