Marcie Paglione My goal is to create a health and physical education program that promotes physical activity and overall

wellbeing as a lifelong process for students. I will teach students to strive for healthy lifestyles by encouraging and inspiring them to understand and implement healthful behavior practices in their lives. In order to ensure this, I will teach a variety of activities to challenge students, physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. Through this program, students will work towards becoming proficient in psychomotor skills, understanding the benefits of these skills and value their effect on their life currently and in the long-term. I will teach using a skills theme approach and will incorporate the value orientation of self-actualization. I will assess the students' progress with performance-based assessments that provide many opportunities for success and cater to the individual learning needs of students. I believe the purpose of education, and more specifically health and physical education, is to guide people in learning and doing beyond what they already know. In health and physical education students are taught about wellness, physical activity, and how to integrate the two into a lifelong process. With the current obesity trends of the world today, it is important now more than ever to stress these ideals to improve people's overall quality of life. With the implementation of health and physical education classes in schools, students will be educated on how to keep themselves healthy, happy, and active. They can then work as advocates to spread this message to their family, friends, and community to make an impact on the current health status of the nation. To teach health and physical education in an effective manner it is important to base the learning on national standards. Standards assure that lessons have clear-cut goals and

objectives for students to accomplish and outline a definite outcome for the program. This does not mean that each student must achieve the outcome in the same way. Education is a guide to help students achieve their full potential through a process of self-actualization where students are able to meet and achieve objectives, discover themselves and set their own personal goals. Health and physical educators strive to have students take what they have learned and apply it as a life long idea. Through the self-actualization process, students are able to develop self-esteem and self-worth through their accomplishments and are much more likely to carry what they have learned throughout the rest of their lives To implement this open and positive learning environment, teaching would be focused on cooperative, exploratory, and guided discovery learning with many opportunities for success for each student. With a variety of activities, group and individual work, and areas of varying difficulty through teaching by invitation principles and the use of intra-task variation, students would be encouraged to explore their own way of how an activity should be done to encourage their creativity and passion for health and physical education. The skill-theme approach I plan to teach with focuses on these developmentally and instructionally appropriate challenges. My teaching will then focus on the individualization of education for every student (Lund & Tannehill, 2010). To ensure that each student can achieve success, every student must feel comfortable and willing to participate. Through teaching styles that encourage personal growth and development, students, with the help of the teacher, can discover what they like and dislike about health and exercise. This way they can carry their positive health and physical education experiences into their future lives.
