Early Childhood Special Education Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Salisha Shears Grade Level: 1 Lesson: Part 2 - Family members who live In my house Unit of Study: Social Studies/Family Goal of Lesson (Common Core State Standards/Division of Early Childhood where appropriate) Teach students that families exist in many different forms and structures. Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion). Objectives: Students will be able to discuss & answer questions about Whos in a family story read the previous day. Students will be able to identify members of their families (within their household) verbally & in writing (mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, etc.) Pre-Assessment: Beginning of lesson - Students will be asked questions about the book Whos in a Family? (ex. Who are some of the people that make up a family? What does it mean when someone is an only child?) Students will also have the opportunity to ask questions. Post-Assessment: Students will be able to identify family members who reside in their household (verbally & in writing during class discussion, turn and talk and In my house project). Students will discuss how they may be the same or different from peers. Students will discuss the people who make up their family? Materials: Whos in a family book, art work created by students, strips of paper, pencils, crayons, color pencils Use of Technology: N/A Differentiation: Harder: Students will be asked to write the name and relationship (mom/Suzy) of family members Easier: Students will be able to dictate household members to teacher teacher will write ESL: Visuals and modeling will be used throughout lesson

Seating Configuration/Use of Physical Space: Large group for book & lesson Students will sit at assigned desks for In my house family project & share Teaching roles and collaboration: Cooperating teachers will sit at the perimeter of rug to help re-direct students as needed. There will also be a cooperating teacher at each table to help facilitate project & assess student knowledge of family members in household. Classroom Management: Students will be reminded of the class magic 5 rules. Students will be encouraged to raise a quiet hand & wait their turn to answer questions. Students will be praised for following magic 5 rules. Engagement of students/anticipatory set/Motivation: Students will continue project where they will be able to identify and write family members on strips of papers that would later become stairs on their in my house family project Connection to Previous lesson/Prior Knowledge: Discuss book read previous day. Lesson Presentation: Estimated Time: Approx. 20 min Discussion about Whos in a Family? book, discuss individuals who make up their families, turn and talk about how many people they live with (how many adults, how many children?) Guided Practice/Active Involvement/Small group work/Independent Practice: Estimated Time: Approx. 20 min Students will return to desk to write the names of people who make up their family (mom, dad, siblings, etc.) Final Summary/Closure: Estimated Time: Approx. 5 min briefly have student turn and talk to their neighbors about similarities and differences in their families. Close by highlighting the fact that families are made up in different ways. Extension: For HW Students will be asked to illustrate a picture of their family.
