Student Friendly Objective: The students will summarize a text. The students will determine the main idea of a text. Assessment: Objective One: Formal Formative: During guided practice I will be able to see if students understand how to summarize the text properly by using the Rule-Based Summarizing strategy. If students grasp the concept I will allow them to move on to independent practice and if they do not I will go over the rules again and then model another page. Formal Summative: During independent practice the students will summarize a page as a group using the Rule-Based Summarizing strategy. Mastery will be shown if the group scores 3 out of 4 on the rubric. If students do not achieve mastery I will model the strategy again or pick a different one that may work better for my students. Objective Two: Formal Formative: During guided practice I will be able to see if students can form a main idea from the section of text assigned. The students are to underline the main idea. If students can do this they will be able to move on to independent practice but if they are struggling I will go over what a main idea is (taught in a previous lesson) and guide them to forming one. Formal Summative: During independent practice the students will work in groups to show me what they know about creating a main idea from an assigned text. Mastery will be shown by a group receiving 3 out of 4. If students do not achieve mastery I will model how to create a main idea from an assigned text.

Instructional Procedure: 1. Anticipatory Set: Ask the students if any anyone can remember the book that we read yesterday. Ask if anyone can tell me about the book. Tell the students that today we will summarize the text using the Rule-Based Summarizing strategy. 2. Instructional Input/Direct Instruction: The teacher will guide the discussion, model summarizing a page of the book using the Rule-Based Summarizing Strategy, guide students as a group to summarize a page, and walk around to check students for understanding. The students will participate in the discussion, work as a class to summarize a page, and work in groups to summarize different pages. 3. Modeling: Pass out the Rules of Rule-Based Summarizing to all of the students. Explain the different rules of Rule-Based Summarizing to the students (rules are listed below). Tell the students to pay close attention to what you are doing because they will be doing it in groups on their own. Ask the students to turn to the first page where the story begins. Read the page aloud and think through the rules out loud. Rule One- Take out the material that is not important. Rule Two- Take out words that repeat information. Rule Three- Replace a list of things with one word that describes them. Rule Four- Find a topic sentences or create one if it is missing (for this lesson topic sentence will be changed to main idea). Talk about what you would do with each step and then right the following information on the board as the summary:

o Sheldon Russell Curtis told a story to his daughter that she kept close to her heart and she later retold throughout her life. Sheldon was injured in a battle and was left for dead for two days or so he thought. He was only fifteen. Another man who was separated from his company rescued him. o Underline the topic sentence when complete. 4. Guided Practice: Have the students turn the page and work as a group to summarize the page. Guide the students as needed to help them complete the strategy. Ask questions and help them to refine their ideas if need be. Remember guide them do not tell them the answers. Once students are completed with their summary offer up possible suggestions for improvement and make sure to point of the strengths of their summary. 5. Independent Practice: Divide the class up into groups of three students. Assign each group a different page to summarize. Remind them of the different rules. Have the students write their summaries in their journals and tell them to make sure they underline the main idea or ideas.. 6. Closure: Have a student reread the objective. Ask if they think the objective was meant. Tell the students that they will be sharing their summaries with the entire class. 7. References: Brown, A.L., Campione, J.C., & Day, J. (1981).
