Amanda Parker Title: Elementary Lesson Plans Date: Fall 2012 Artifact Description: This artifact is a compilation of several

lesson plans from my Elementary Music Methods Class

ALIGNMENT Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment This experience best aligns with standard two of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social, and personal development. This experience best aligns with standard two because I used my knowledge of childrens abilities to adjust my lesson plans to encompass as many developmental aspects as I could. It was my goal to make sure that even at a very young age my students would be able to understand the material and concepts I was putting in front of them. As my lesson plans illustrate, I utilized every aspect of presentation and reinforcement to teach my students. I used visual aids, auditory cues, and kinesthetic activities, allowing each of my students to be able to participate and grow in some way intellectually. In several of my lessons, I split my entire class into groups so that the students worked together, which aided in their social development. My students were able to help others in their group learn the subject I was presenting, and therefore developed personally as well. I was most impressed with these concepts when I taught Kindergarten; watching the students grow intellectually, socially, and personally through the ways that I designed my lesson. UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment I align this experience most closely with KSD 1.b which states: The candidate displays knowledge of the typical developmental characteristics, learning styles, skills, interests, developmental backgrounds, and cultural heritages of students and is always aware of the broad ranges and variety present for each of these student characteristics and lifestyles. While teaching this lesson, I was able to use my knowledge of developmental characteristics by utilizing the different modes of instruction. I used visual, audio, and kinesthetic instruction to help my students learn in the best way possible. In some cases, I have worked with students with special needs, and finding ways to include them whether through more kinesthetic activities or other such adjustments, I was able to help my students with Autism understand the material I was teaching. Using visual aids helps to address different interests among students, and asking for student feedback also helps bring up student interests which allowed me to adjust my lesson plan accordingly. For example, if the majority of my kids have an interest in the current pop group on the radio, then I can relate the lesson to that particular group. Keeping awareness of these things allowed me to have very successful lessons. Secondary Alignments: KSD 1.a KSD 1.c

REFLECTION

What I learned about teaching/learning: I learned that children develop differently, and allowing several different ways to learn and grow within the classroom is important. Learning about and having a positive relationship with my students assists in making lesson plans more applicable for my students. I learned that it takes a lot of planning and thought to make sure that every student in my classroom has a fair chance to understand the materials that I am teaching. I also learned that group work is often the most appropriate outlet to aid in social and personal development, especially in young children. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator: As a prospective educator, I learned the value in planning lessons that accommodate all children and their developmental needs. I learned that being well-versed in the developmental progression of children, especially those in elementary school, allows me to adjust my lesson plans to a more appropriate level for my students. I learned that I need to take more time and be more patient with my lesson plans and make sure that each and every one of my students is included and respected within my lesson plan.
