What is your process when creating your art? I spend a few hours drawing a small version of the larger contour thing. So when I get the general shape together its just a matter of scanning, enlarging, printing and adding in more complex lines until I have a kind of penultimate image. I built an A1 light box from a piece of opal perspex, so I can trace that final image and add even more lines until I end up with a flat grey mass. So yeah, it can take quite a lot of preparation before I actually start on the final drawing. Im hoping to be able to practice enough that I can draw onto other surfaces with a level precision that I dont need the light box. Thatll be cool. Tool of the trade? I go through like 30 fine-liners a week. Do you ever get artists block? If so, how do you overcome it? I dont think I do really get the conventional version of artists block that people talk about. Ive never found myself in a situation where I had to force creativity out of myself. If it doesnt come, I do nothing (although with uni next year Ill probably be doing that a lot, aye. Fuck.) Im into making sound pieces also, and I really get stuck with that because of technical issues. If I get a block I just force my way through it.

What has been your favourite artwork to produce so far? I had a lot of fun with most recent drawing I did, which is part of a series of four contour things. Its taken the longest to finish and Im proud of how it turned out. Any artists, designers you look up to? Yayoi Kusama and David Choe might seem like a bit of a disjointed combination, but Id say those two have had a huge influence in how I do things - and not just art. Also multi-disciplinary artists are my favourite kind of people, so I really look up to those geniuses who cross over creative fields and are good at everything. Are you currently involved in any projects or work at the moment? Im not really a part of any projects other than my own work at this stage. Oh! I can plug my sound project, omnee, where I make soundscapes and music-based stuff. Ill be releasing my first official thing sometime early next year I think. So check it out! Namaste

LIAM VAUGHAN

Can you give a brief background about yourself and what you like to do? My name is Liam. I was born and educated in Australia, and Im halfway through a year of doing close to nothing with myself. Feels good, man. Whats your inspiration? Um, Im inspired heavily by the idea of infinity. Fractal geometry in nature, repeated patterns and sounds - that sort of thing. The idea that human beings and our consciousness is pretty closely tuned-in to things like this is fascinating to me. So yeah, I try to recreate this intrigue I have through my art. Favourite song/band to listen to when you draw? I pretty much dont think when I draw. Its a meditative process for me, so if I am listening to music, I listen mostly to drone, ambient noise stuff Mammal from the Nostilevo label has been a recent go-to for me.

Kendrick as well, and Miley and Gaga are always good to listen to as well. Actually, Im happy to listen to anything really. You must have a lot of patience to do the kind of art you do. How long does a piece generally take you to complete and what is the longest youve spent on an artwork? Yeah, I think patience is important for drawing anything really. A lot of the larger images Ive created are based on smaller versions that I draw in books or on tissues or paper bags at work or whatever else. So the process of actually creating the final thing can be like months worth of drawing. But the longest I have spent on one piece of paper is a bit over 20 hours altogether. It can be painfully time-consuming sometimes, but I think Im usually pretty determined to get it done.
