Dictionary Skills Lesson Plan Teacher: Alexa Vetnar Standard: Consult reference materials, including beginning dictionaries, as needed

to check and correct spellings. (3.L.2) Objective (Explicit): For students to be able to use, consult, and refer to dictionaries to check spellings and find word definitions to strengthen vocabulary skills Subject: ELA

Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex): Put words in alphabetical order Find words and definitions in a dictionary Use guide words to find words in the dictionary Find synonyms and antonyms in a dictionary (if available)

Evidence of Mastery (Measurable): Students will be able to explain how to find a word in the dictionary as well as be able to use dictionary skills to answer questions and find vocabulary words Materials: SMARTboard Class set of dictionaries YouTube video Class set of dictionary worksheets Words written on sentence strips List of words to put in alphabetical order Class set of plastic magnifying glasses

Key vocabulary: dictionary- a book that lists the words of a language in alphabetical order and gives their meaning synonym- 2 words that have the same or similar meanings antonym- 2 words that are opposites guide words- a word printed at the top of the page of a dictionary or other reference book to indicate the first or last item on that page

Engage: TTW show YouTube video A Lesson on Alphabetizing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCDYoEm5Ls8 TTW put 3 words on the board in alphabetical order pre-written on sentence strips

Describe Explore activity and have 2 students repeat directions

Ask the students what do you notice about these words? TTW ask a few students take turns putting words in alphabetical order on board

Inquiry Question #1- How can we use our knowledge and understanding of the alphabet to put words into alphabetical order?
Teacher Will: Explore Give each student their own set of 10 words on cards to put into alphabetical order Answer any questions and assist students as well as monitor progress Student Will: Individually arrange words into alphabetical order using manipulatives given by the teacher

Why do we use dictionaries? What can be found in a dictionary? Why do we need to know how to put words in alphabetical order before using a dictionary? HOW CAN WE FIND WORDS IN A DICTIONARY?
Show students where guidewords can be found in their dictionaries.

Elaborate

Explain what a guideword is- the first and last words that are on that page of the dictionary

Do a few practice rounds of finding guidewords together as a class.

Evaluate: Students will complete a ticket out the door that assesses their understanding of dictionary skills. During this time, students will put up their blue office assistant folder. The activity will include 3 questions.
