Composing an Annotated Bibliography ISearch Project

Writing a Summary:

The first one to two sentences of your summary should state the main idea of the article. If you read a persuasive article, then you would state the articles thesis. You want to state the articles author or source and the articles title in the first sentence. Refer to your handout on Rhetorically Accurate Verbs to help you. You may follow this template: In _________s (author or source) article titled ____________ (source title) the writer __________ (use an rhetorically accurate verb such as explains, expresses, suggests, summarizes, argues, demonstrates) that . After you state the main idea, write a few more sentences adding the supporting points, subsections of the article, or less important details. Here is a sample summary of the article we found from Instructor Magazine. In Jennifer L.W.s article True grit: 10 tips for promoting strength, resilience, and perseverance among your students from Instructor magazine, she summarizes the finding of three major educational theorists (Paul Tough, author of How Children Succeed, Stanford university professor Carol Dweck, and Unniversity of Pennsylvanias Angela Duckworth) who suggest that character traits such as perseverance, hard work, effort, and grit may be more important than aptitude or skill. Jennifer then proceeds to outline ten strategies that can help educators build endurance and resiliency in their students. These strategies range from encouraging teachers to implement curriculum that connects to students passions to urging teachers to reinforce actions and effort rather than performance. Jennifer quotes the three researchers several times throughout the article to support the pedagogical basis of these ten strategies. Reflecting on/Evaluating the Helpfulness of this source: The second part of your annotated bibliography will ask you to evaluate how helpful this source is to you in shaping your research, how it compares to other sources youve found, and the credibility of the source. I found Jennifer L.W.s article extremely beneficial to my research as it connects with the other sources Ive already read and found, including Paul Toughs book and Carol Dwecks book on Growth Mindset. Angela Duckworth is another expert that continues to come up through my research on Grit, so this article further emphasizes her importance in the role. I also find the practical strategies listed in her article extremely helpful and accessible. Her article just doesnt cite theory but applies the theory to practice. The practical strategies listed help to separate this article from my other sources. Because I found the article through the Gale database, I do not need to worry about the credibility of the article.
