NCA Credo for Ethical Communication

I am going to take each point of the NCA Credo and apply an example of how it can be realized in an organization. We advocate truthfulness, accuracy, honesty, and reason as essential to the integrity of communication. o If one employee is lying to the higher-ups to further his career and get that promotion as the expense of somebody else and in turn gets the other employee fired because of the lie he told the entire integrity of the organization is compromised. We endorse freedom of expression, diversity of perspective, and tolerance of dissent to achieve the informed and responsible decision making fundamental to a civil society. o While making an important business decision it is better to have a group of people with various opinions it will be easier to make an informed decision. The organization needs to make sure they encourage their employees to express themselves freely with their many perspectives. We strive to understand and respect other communicators before evaluating and responding to their messages. o Two employees are communicating about how they think they should handle a situation in the office and they both disagree on what decision they think is best but after allowing each other to share their viewpoint on the situation they both begin to see what the other person is saying ad they make a good decision they both agree on. We promote access to communication resources and opportunities as necessary to fulfill human potential and contribute to the well-being of families, communities, and society. o Cindy works over 4o hours a week but is also a wife and a mother of two. When she is at work her office allows her to take personal phone calls to make sure she can keep in contact with her family. One of her kids is sick so she stays home but it works out because her work has installed her work programs onto her laptop so she is able to work from home. This makes Cindy happier because she is able to do her job while still taking care of her family. We promote communication climates of caring and mutual understanding that respect the unique needs and characteristics of individual communicators. o My boss at my internship realized that not all of the interns communicated in the same ways and saw that one intern in particular needed more guidance and a gentler more caring approach when being given and evaluated on tasks. My boss recognizing the differences in each of the interns made each intern happier and therefore made the entire work environment more enjoyable. We condemn communication that degrades individuals and humanity through distortion, intimidation, coercion, and violence, and through the expression of intolerance and hatred. o I once worked at a company where the boss would yell and tear down any person that did not do exactly what he wanted. He got away with it for a while but once a couple of employees decided to speak up to corporate they investigated and ended up firing him because they realized the way he was operating made the workplace less enjoyable and therefore less productive. We are committed to the courageous expression of personal convictions in pursuit of fairness and justice.

My boss at my internship wanted all of the interns to be upfront about how we felt and what we thought was best in certain situations. I really felt as if I could be myself while working at my internship without being judged. We advocate sharing information, opinions, and feelings when facing significant choices while also respecting privacy and confidentiality. o In most organizations there are very important decisions made on a weekly basis and organizations make better decisions when they allow a variety of people with different life experiences and opinions because the difference in people allows for a better analysis and outcome of the decision that needs to be made. We accept responsibility for the short and long-term consequences for our own communication and expect the same of others. o An employee recognizes that because of her ability to communicate well and listen to others while they talk and really have deep and open conversations she will in the short-term have better relationships with those around her and in the long-term she will probably move up in her organization. She also expects her co-worker to recognize that because of her inability to listen to people she probably will not move on or have very real relationships with the other employees instead of blaming others around her. o
