Dear Mrs. Smith: I am seeking a position as a school counselor and believe my passion for ensuring all youth receive the supports they need to be successful, as well as my diverse experiences in various settings make me uniquely qualified for this position. As a volunteer at a homeless youth shelter in San Diego, I counseled youth through difficult family situations, identity development, and unplanned parenthood. As a counseling trainee at Libby Elementary School in Oceanside, CA, I implemented school wide curriculum, conducted small groups, and met weekly with a caseload of individual students. Currently, as a counseling trainee at Hoover High School in San Diego, CA, I have collected, interpreted, and analyzed data in order to develop and implement intentional guidance curriculum for 9th through 12th graders. I have also implemented school wide curriculum on graduation requirements, suicide awareness, and financial aid. Additionally, for the last three years I have been instrumental in the planning and organizing of two different national conferences which provided training to youth-serving professionals on issues unique to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. As the parent of a student in the San Diego Unified School District, I am very familiar with Vision 2020 and believe I have the training, experience and motivation to be a leader in this educational reform initiative. I am a passionate advocate for equity of access in regards to educational opportunities for all students and utilize data to find where challenging discussions are needed in order to ensure academic achievement for all students. As a counseling trainee at Hoover High School and an intern at Cherokee Point Elementary School, I have become intimately familiar with the City Heights Educational Collaborative and the benefits of building relationships with schools in the cluster and throughout the district. Furthermore, I am able to bring a parental perspective to my position as a school counselor and educational leader to help develop initiatives that draw parents into the collaborative educational process.
