The High Accuracy Reference Network (HARN) is a superset of points determined by GPS to accuracies of 1ppm or better.

Not all states have a HARN. Once a statewi de HARN is complete, the statewide control network is adjusted to it. Some background, at the time of its adoption in 1986, the NAD 83 did not include GPS observations. As GPS allows much greater precision, 10 ppm can be obtained almost trivially, it showed the shortcomings of the NAD 83 system. The NGS in co operation with individual states started a program of GPS surveys at the 1ppm or better level. The work should be complete by the end of 1997. Currently, their are two types of NAD 83 points. One is NAD 83 (1986) which refl ects the original nationwide adjustment (which does *NOT* include GPS). The othe r is labeled NAD 83 (####), the #### refers to the date of the adjustment of the statewide network. These designations will change shortly to exclude the date a nd merely indicate whether the point has been adjusted to the HARN.
