Lesson #1

! Suppose you got a new apartment and you were thinking about getting the couch below but you are not
sure if it would fit inside.

Lesson 1: Geometric Shapes!

Rather than buying it and trying to make it fit, we can make a geometric object based on the size of the couch to and use that to see if it will fit. This object is pretty simple, we can see it is a rectangle from the top.

! If we look at it from the front we can see this rectangle is a perfect match for it. Unlike the real couch we

can have this rectangle shrink and place it on a floor plan of our house to see if it will fit. Though these geometric shapes are not the same, they are similar. The angles are the same even if the size is not the same. We can use this new geometric shape to place on a smaller floor plan. In fact, using the same angles and ratios of the lengths of sides we can see if it fits on any floor plan. We can even make some smaller similar geometric shapes. Each of the below geometric shapes are similar. Using these can save us a lot of time and money.

Lesson #1

Rectangles are easy to describe though, what about more complicated objects? How would you describe the shape below?

! !

! ! ! ! ! ! !

! !

Rather than try to describe it in physical terms we can describe it as a series of lines and angles. There are seven angles in the geometric shape above label them 1 to 7 and describe what kind of angles they are: Acute, Right, Obtuse, Reflex.

Are there any relationships between the lines here? Label the lines A-G and describe which ones relate to one another and how they relate in the lines below. Hint: At least two sides are parallel.

Finally, we would give an overall description of the object:

This object has three acute angles, two obtuse angles, and two reflex angles. Of the seven sides, at lest two are parallel.

Lesson #1

Take the geometric shape below and describe it using angles, lengths of sides. Make sure to use the specific vocabulary talked about in this lesson. First, use a table to label and describe the angles, curves, and lines. Then describe it using your tables in words.
