Meuler Lesson Title: Causes of World Wars Stage 1 Desired Results Standards: Social Studies, Standard B: History B.12.4 Assess the validity of different interpretations of significant historical events Social Studies, Standard B: History B.12.11 Compare examples and analyze why governments of various countries have sometimes sought peaceful resolution to conflicts and sometimes gone to war Essential questions: 1. What causes different countries/civilizations to go to war? 2. How do causes of one war relate to another? Topical questions: 1. What are the causes of WWI and WWII? 2. How do the causes of WWI and WWII relate to conflicts in the students lifetime? Grade level: 9

Student objectives (outcomes): Students will be able to: Identify causes of WWI and WWII. Describe causes of WWI and WWII. Create a jigsaw of causes of WWI and WWII. Discuss how causes of war apply to multiple conflict. Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Formative assessment Summative assessment Small group discussions with Outcome of the jigsaw will be teacher interaction. included on the unit test on WWII. Students put answers/responses on the board for student and teacher feedback. Students must participate in a group discussion and articulate ideas to the entire class.

Stage 3 Learning Plan Learning Activities/Procedure (include timing): 41 Minute Class School prayer and announcements (3 min) Pass-backs (2 min) o Student intro investigations o Reading Comprehension Guide chapter 26 o Study Guide chapter 26 o Handout materials (two worksheets) for todays exercise Set Context (5 minutes) o Direct students to both worksheets o Describe procedure for the day Group Discussion (10 minutes) o Students are assigned to one of four corners o Students will complete the worksheet for their assigned cause of war To the Board (5 minutes) o Students will report group results on the board Review of Results (15 minutes) o Teacher led discussion o Confirm responses and make corrections o Have groups offer brief comments on their connections to today Wrap Up (1 min)
