Year 8 Humanities Japan Mapping AND Analysis Exercise

Japan is made up about 3,900 islands with a total land area of nearly 380,000 square kilometres. Most of this area is contained in the four main islands of Japan Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Japan is a very mountainous country with mountains occupying almost of the country. Many of these mountains are volcanic Japan has some 77 active volcanoes. Many mountains are forested 70% of the country is covered in some type of forest. From North to South, Japan extends to 3,000 kilometr bes. Due to the large difference in latitude between the North and South islands, the climate varies considerably.

PART A MAPPING TASK 1.


On the base/outline map provided: 1. Latitude- Label two lines of latitude (the angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator) that runs through Japan. 2. Longitude Label two lines of longitude (the angular distance of a place east or west of the Greenwich meridian that runs through Japan. 3. B.O.L.T.S.- Your base map must have (Border, Orientation, Legend(key), Title & Scale). Your Legend (KEY) will explain your use of colors: eg. Part C - MAPPING ANALYSIS


1. Using the information provided, explain how Japan compares in size to Australia (in terms of land mass) 2. Using the information provided, explain how Japan compares with Australia in terms of population density. (2-5 sentences) 3. What countries lie closest to Japan?
