Liu, Dana Conrad Group Instructor: Dr. Jay 1) What is the purpose of having/following a "Code of Ethics"?
In the real world, everything engineers create are supposed to be legal and comfortable for the society. The Code of Ethics means we should take responsibility of society, and help the life improving a better way. To be the first rule is safety of our products. 2) When you are faced with an ethical situation, how do you, personally, go about making a decision? What factors are involved in making your decision? Be specific! When I facing an ethical issue, I will analyst it first from the Code of Ethics which tell me what rule I should obey or which rules the cases violated. To be specific, first, the safety will always come to be the first place of all ethical because all the designed things are served for people which mean it should keep them in a stable situation instead of dangerous surroundings. In the second place, I will consider the fair because things are created by engineers should obey the rule that respect every kinds of people which means treat everybody fairly includes all races, religion, gender, disability, age or national origin. 3) What case study was discussed in your small group? How did the ethical considerations introduced by your group members differ from your own? How were they alike? Was your group able to come to a consensus on what the most "ethical" decision would be? In the small group discussion, we talked about the case Citicorp Building. This building is divided by 2 parts. The initial part was a church, St. Peters Lutheran Church. Then the second part is a new innovation built just above the church which made the whole building into a strange out looking. Moreover, there are 2 calculations for the buildings which cause the ethical problems. According to the Dr. Jay, when he finished readings, he said there are no ethical problems because it is legal first and it also proves the safety due to its still stable till now. Dr. Jay said every engineer should obey the ethical codes because it is the rule can ensure that it is comfortable for the society. After the discussion, we decided the most ethical is the safety which is the first code of the Codes of Ethics. 4) Reflect on the "Virtue of Ethics" as it relates to the case study your group discussed. Choose three of the six virtues that you feel are most related to your case study and briefly write about them. Why did you choose the three you did? How are they relevant to the case study? Why are the other virtues less relevant? Is there another ethical virtue you feel could apply to your case study that is NOT included in the "Virtue of Ethics?" Why or why not?

According to the case, we decided the Responsibility would be the best choice. In the case the designer William LeMessurier is accountability and trustworthiness. Then the second choice will be Honesty because any mistakes would make a lot of tragedy. Therefore, the designer or engineer should report any error or potential dangers. The third choice will be Self-discipline because every designer should treat things like reasonable restraint in his or her own life. The other choice might be not very related to the case that is why I dont choose them. I think there might be some more but the 6 virtue of ethics have already covered all area of ethics.
