CareersinMathematicsEducation
Duringthefreshmanyear,studentsarepairedwithamathematicseducationfacultymentorwhowill guidethemthroughaseriesofpreprofessionalexperiencestointroducethemtotheteaching profession.Inthefirstfewyears,studentsspendatotalof3daysobservingmathematicsteachingin suburban,ruralandurbansettings.Inaddition,studentsvolunteerasmathematicstutors.Studentsalso becomeactiveinaprofessionalorganization,participateincommunityserviceprojectsandbecome involvedindepartmentalactivities. Duringthesenioryearcapstonecourses,studentsobserveandworkwithtwosecondarymathematics teachersfor7to8daysintheirclassrooms.Thisimmersionexperiencepreparestheprospectiveteacher forthepaceandpracticeofdaytodayteaching. We believe in educating beyond the classroom and providing opportunities for handson experience, which is a key component of your college education. Major Coursework Early Childhood PK4 Certification: You may seek certification in Early Childhood PK4 education. Specific emphasis is placed on the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, and children in the primary grades. Courses and field experiences in this program lead to the Pennsylvania Instructional I Certificate in PK4, which enables you to teach preschool through grade 4. Program highlights include: Foundations of Early Childhood Historical Perspectives Integration of Child-Centered Curriculum Observation as a Tool Assessment of Young Children Inclusion of Young Children with Special Needs Facilities Built in 2004, the state-of-the-art Education & Technology Center was designed for one purposeto train teachers. The facility features the most advanced equipment, including total wireless capability, live video conferencing, and translation capabilities for conferences. Field Experience We strongly believe in placing students into the field and into as many different classroom environments as possible. Freshman and Sophomore YearObservations In our unique program called Observations, youll begin visiting and experiencing a wide variety of teaching environments including preschool, middle school, high school, charter school, parochial school, inner-city school, suburban school, and more. Youll write reflective journals, and youll relate what youve learned to classes youre taking in your first year. Junior YearThe Practicum In your second year, in what is called Practicum, your experience will increase. Youll be placed one day a week, for a full day, in a school working in a classroom with a teacher. Youll do assignments, write lesson plans, teach several classes, and work with technology in the classroom. Senior YearStudent Teaching In your final year, as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, youll do your Student Teachinga full-time supervised student teaching semester in which you basically take over a class. TheB.S.withTeachingprovidesbroadtraininginMathematics,andpreparesstudentsfora careerinsecondaryschoolteaching.TheeducationcoursesintheB.S.withTeachingincludesupervised teachinginschooldistrictclassroomsandemphasizeinquirybasedapproachestolearning.Studentsin theB.S.withTeachingdegreeprogrambecomeeligible foraPennsylvaniateachercertificationwhen theycompletealltherequirementsforthedegreethatincludetheoreticalandpracticalcoursesin educationspecificallydesignedforscienceandmathematicsmajors.
