UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA: This Culture Shock lesson is part of a unit covering culture. It requires understanding and ability to recognize different physical features of people and cultures of different places around the world as described in the Tennessee State Department of Education requirements K.1.02 Discuss cultures and
human patterns of places and regions of the world.

LESSON OBJECTIVE: Content Learning Goals and Objectives Given a lesson on diversity and culture, students will research a specific culture using the internet with 100% accuracy. Given the topic research, students will create a five slide power point presentation using the Microsoft Power Point software.
Student Participation

The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate an understanding of differences among people and identify similarities and differences in food, clothes, homes, games, and families in different cultures. STANDARDS ADDRESSED: State/ District, Tennessee State Department of Education
K.1.02 Discuss cultures and human patterns of places and regions of the world. a. Understand that some differences among people are a result of their culture. b. Identify similarities and differences in food, clothes, homes, games, and families in different cultures.

MATERIALS: Materials Used Computer Microsoft Power Point Internet Access to: o google.com o google.com/images
Technology Integration

Students will research a given culture using Google. Students will use Microsoft Power Point to demonstrate their knowledge of their given culture. Students will use Google Images to insert pictures to the document demonstrating what the given culture eats, dresses like, and the animal symbol for that culture. Students will present their Power Point presentation to the class.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of different cultures. This lesson is a continuation of Tennessee State Department of Education Kindergarten standards. We will refer to the summary created here as we continue to explore other cultures. I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson. PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction When the students first arrive, they will be instructed to sit at a computer that is already displaying the Google web page. First, review what we have learned about culture within the previous lessons. Then, ask if they can tell us about differences in a culture. Ask for examples of cultures. Procedures:
Student Procedures: 1. Students will record their culture topic on a piece of paper. 2. The student will listen quietly to the teacher as she explains the directions for the assignment.

Prior to the Computer (10 minutes) Teacher Procedures: 1. Teacher will give students a specific culture topic to research. 2. After the distribution of the topics, teacher will give the instructions of the assignment.

At the computer (30 minutes) Teacher Procedures: 1. Provide students with the internet compatible computer and guide students to Google page. 2. Explain to students how to search on Google. 3. Explain to students how to search images on Google. 4. Teacher guides student to Microsoft Power Point application. 5. Teacher walks around to help students if they need it. Student Procedures: 1. Student visits the Google page. 2. Student searches assigned culture on Google. 3. Student searches pictures pertaining to their culture on Google images. 4. Student transfers information and images gathered to Microsoft Power Point. 5. Students save the presentation and wait for further instruction.

After the Computer (20 minutes)

Teacher Procedures: 1. Teacher makes sure that all students power points are saved correctly. 2. Teacher will begin instructing students to present to the class.

Student Procedures: 1. Students sit quietly until further instruction. 2. Student called on will stand up and present the presentation to the class.

Closure:
Students quietly listen to peers present power point presentation.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

Criteria Correct information

1 The student attempted the assignment but missed most. The student did not add images to the power point presentation.

2 The student was correct on most information. The student added some images to the power point or the images did not make sense based on the information researched. The student presented the power point presentation.

Images pertaining to the assignment

3 The student was correct on all information researched. The student added images to all slides and inserted pictures that pertained to the culture topic given.

Presentation

The student did not present power point presentation.

The student worked hard at presenting the power point presentation.

MODIFICATIONS: I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
