Bases
Concept 1: What kind of solution is an acid or a base?
4 = clear understanding 2 = some misunderstandings
3 = general understanding 1 = little to no understanding
Big Idea #1: Solutions with solutes that are hydrogen ions (H
+
) are acids.
Solutions with solutes that are hydroxide ions (OH
-
) are bases.
ACID
Directions:
1. Draw how the water molecules would separate one
H
+
ion from a Cl
-
ion.
2. Demonstration with Zinc metal.
H
+
ions tend to accept electrons.
Why do you think H
+
ions would be attracted to
electrons?
BASE
Directions:
1. Draw how the water molecules would separate one
OH
-
ion from a Na
+
ion.
2. Fight club movie clip.
OH
-
ions tend to donate electrons.
Why do you think OH
-
ions would be able to donate
electrons?
Why does an acid or a base have to be a solution in order for a reaction to occur?
How are acids and bases different?
Big Idea #2: The concentration of an acid or a base depends on the amount of hydrogen ions (H
+
) or
hydroxide ions (OH
-
). The pH and pOH scale (0-14) is used to describe the strength of acids and bases.
pH + pOH = 14
ACID
> Strong acid:
- The acid completely
dissociates into H
+
ions and the
other ion.
- There is a high concentration
of H
+
ions.
- pH = 0, pOH = 14
> Weak acid:
- The acid partially
dissociates into H
+
ions and the
other ion.
- There is a low concentration
of H
+
ions.
- pH = closer to 7
BASE

ACID and BASE
An acid and a base of similar strength will neutralize each other.
What is the pH of a neutral solution? How did you come to this answer?
You test a solution and the pH is 2.
What is the pOH? ______ How did you get this answer?
Is the solution an acid or a base? _________
Describe how the ions are dissociated:
You test a solution and the pOH is 5.
