To form an adverb we usually add –ly to the adjective ( in Spanish –mente) but:

1. If the adjective ends in -y, replace it with -i and then add -ly.

Happy happily

2. If the adjective ends in -le, replace


the -e with –y
gentle gently

3. If the adjective ends in -ic, add -ally.


basic basically

This rule, however, has an exception.


The adverb formed from public is publicly,
and not publically.

4. if the adjective ends in –l we add –ly
