This is an elegy for a stalwart woman who spent the last portion of her life sacrificially researching, seeking, and advocating for truth and justice for victims of the Rwandan genocide. The poetic form is traditional African lament and the persona is African. She is missed well beyond the Human Right Watch circle. The world misses a gem!

ON THE PASSING OF ALISON DES FORGES IN A PLANE CRASH
Ah, as if nothing has changed
the sun still rose this morning Bright and shine; As if nothing has happened.
Eeeh!…the warrior has lost the grip of the spear.
Ah, we see the crown but no more the queen, the jungle quiet, the elephant fallen, The lion’s roar silenced, the reaper’s bag full.
As if nothing has changed
As if nothing has happened Ah, the sun still rose this morning Bright and shine
Could no more the eagle fly
To catch the whoosh of the wind And with the draft pirouette in tune Nor the flake flutter down in a flurry ride?
The great vulture ascended to the gods
Returning with the drought-ending magic eggs. At the outskirt of earth the last of them she smashed, unleashing a storm with which, alas! she crashed down to earth
As if nothing has happened
with the morning the sun still arose As if nothing has changed bright and shine on its usual course
on the farm could the farmer farm
And tools the forger forge and trading thro hands the money circuit not-cease and ever the hungry tummy appease?
Ah, bright and shine on its usual course
the following morning the sun still arose As if nothing has changed As if nothing has happened
