of acute angles

Syllabus Outcome(s):
One or two only. Please note the syllabus
reference number AND write out in full.

Code: MS 5.2.3
- Applies trigonometry to solve
problems those involving bearings

-

Indicators of Learning for this lesson:
Behaviours that contribute toward achievement of outcome(s).
Quote syllabus numbers. Must be clear, specific, observable?
Curriculum Content Strands may be used as headings.

By the end of this lesson, the students will:
- Solve simple problems involving 3-figure bearings

- Recognize directions given as SSW, NE etc.

- Solve Practical Problems involving angles of elevation and
Depression

- Check reasonableness of answers to trigonometry problems

- Interpret directions given as bearings

- Draw and use diagrams to solve word problems which involve
bearings
Assessment:
Strategies, which will be used to assess
learners attainment of learning outcomes.
Should be linked to each learning indicator.

- Observe students responses during
discussion periods

- Check students working out and solutions

assessment and reporting
The NSW board of studies k -12. Curriculum
was used to help design the lesson
Thomas Nguyen 21/5/14 2:46 AM
Comment [2]: 3.1 Establish
challenging learning goals

Learning goals established at the beginning of
the lesson plan, which was found in the
curriculum. Students were hopefully able to
achieve this by the end of the lesson
Thomas Nguyen 21/5/14 2:46 AM
Comment [3]: 5.1 Assess student
learning

This will be considered a more informal way
of assess students learning during the lesson
based on their answers and solutions.

INTRODUCTION

Identifying the correlation between the
points of the compass and angles in
bearings.

Q. What are the four main points on
the compass

Q. How can the compass be used to
find bearings?

Q. How may planes use bearings to
help other ships in activities such as
search and rescue?
A. A plane has a birds eye view and
may see in which direction the sinking
ship is with the bearing from the
rescue ship, so that the rescue ship
may reach there in time.

5
minutes

-Teacher asks Students to stand at their desks and get their
Equipment out - diaries, pens, pencils and exercise
Books
-T greets Ss and praises settled behaviour, uses eye
Contact & tells the asks Ss to sit

T introduces class with the Bearings gives list of
Examples in real life where bearings may be used.
- Warfare
- Search and rescues
- Piloting.

T introduces compass points and the angles between
Them by visually showing Ss a hypothetical northerly
Direction and asking Ss which direction each chosen
Object in classroom is from Teacher.

DEVELOPMENT

- Identify Difference between compass
bearings and true bearings.
Questions = are you able to locate and
identify both compass and true bearings
from a diagram.

- Demonstrate ability to find angle
between directions.
What is the size between N and S?

- Demonstrate ability to draw diagrams
of bearings on number planes

-Demonstrate ability to use diagrams to
answer word equations. And work
through worksheet.

minutes

Teacher draws diagram on board and ask students to
observe and analyse the diagram.
Teacher asks for student responses and gives out
praise accordingly
Teacher continues on for a few more examples.

Teacher writes problems on board and asks students
for responses to solve. Also teacher would draw out the
directions on a number plane as well.

Teacher writes out true bearings as well as compass
bearings and ask students to come up to board to draw
approximately the angles on a number plan on the
board

Teachers will go through and analyse some word
equations and draw diagrams to help figure out
problems.

Note remember to give out praises and refer to
students by name if possible.

Have examples on whiteboards
Use Ruler to ensure diagram
As well as a work sheet.
Which will be included as an appendix

Provide Cut-out Protractors

CLOSURE

Demonstrate student understanding
through by discussing and summarizing
work.

Q. How can a compass be used in real life

5
minutes

T summarizes class activities and restates key
concepts in so all students understand.

Question students again on differences between true
bearings and compass bearings.

Assess
Thomas Nguyen 21/5/14 2:35 AM
Comment [5]: 2.5 Literacy and
numeracy strategies

Word problems in mathematics especially
bearings would involved both literacy and
numeracy skills
Thomas Nguyen 21/5/14 2:41 AM
Comment [6]: 5.2 Provide feedback to
students on their learning

Praises and also constructive feedback were to
be handed out during this period of the lesson

situations?
A. Compass gives north direction, and
allows measuring bearings.

Q. How do you think mariners may use
bearings and trigonometry?

Assign Homework

Assign homework given through Google drive should
students finish work sheet.

Students pack away books.
Dismiss class when all students are quiet.
