MAM-SM Mentor Program

We all know that MAM-SM (previously MASSM) is an experience that is hard

to understand unless you go through it yourself. Even the faculty cannot fully
understand the student experience. Due to the ambi guity that is so
characteristic of the program, the ability to contact former students would
all ow current students to gain some needed support, ask questi ons and gain
advice from those who have gone through the progr am before.

Would you consider making yourself available for these students?
Purpose: To connect current MAM-SM students with alumni who are willing to
provide emotional support.
What it is not:
A formal one mentor to one mentee process: students will be given your
information and will self-select those mentors they would like to connect
with.
An informational interview: Although students may reach out to you for this,
this is not a part of the Mentor Program.
Career focused: The purpose of your support would be focused on tools and
tips of being successful in the program. You can, of course, offer your support
in the job search process but this is not the intent of the Mentor Program.
Expectations:
To be open to talk to students: You can personally decide the amount of time
you would like to commit, do not be afraid to be honest if you do not have
time to meet with all the students that reach out to you, they understand that
you are busy.
Follow through: If you make a commitment to support a particular student,
please follow through. We would like this to be place where students can be
confident that they will receive support.
You do not have to be local: Mentorship can happen over the phone/Skype
etc.
Next Steps If You Are Interested:
Fill out the attached questionnaire and send it to lumleyt@spu.edu by June

Students will be given the list of mentors and self select those that they

MAM-SM Mentor Program
You are about to start an adventure. We remember how it felt to not have a
clue what we were getting ourselves i nto, to be questi oni ng whether thi s was
a good i dea and the excitement for the possibil ities ahead. The good news
for you is that you are not the fi rst ones, students have gone before you and
survived (maybe even thrived!). This i s your opportunity to lean on our
experience, ask those questi ons that mi ght feel silly or to just have someone
tell you that its goi ng to be okay (because it is).
Purpose: To connect current MAM-SM students with alumni who are willing to
provide emotional support.
What it is not:
A formal one mentor to one mentee process: You will receive a list of mentors
and self-select those individuals you connect with.
An informational interview: Although you can reach out to these people for
this separately, this is not a part of the Mentor Program.
Career focused: The purpose of the Mentors support will be focused on tools
and tips to be successful in MAM-SM. You can ask for support in the job
search process, but it is not an official part of the mentor experience.
Expectations:
Take the Initiative and Be Clear: This is a new program, so it will be up to you
to make it a success. You should reach out us (the mentors), and when you
do, be clear about how we can help you and follow through on meeting times
and any other requests we may have.
Respect Our Time: Mentors are volunteering their time because we want to
share our experience and ensure the best experience for you as well. There
may be times we will not be able to meet or support you- we promise it is not
personal.
You Can Contact Multiple Mentors: As the program continues, you may want
to contact someone new or have a different question. It is okay to reach out
to anyone on the mentor list at any time in the program.

Next Steps If You Are Interested:
Fill out the attached questionnaire and send it to dhallak@spu.edu.
Once you receive the list of the mentor(s), email Daniel those you wish to
connect with.
Once he confirms who you can contact (we want to ensure mentors do not
get bombarded) contact your mentor(s) and attach your questionnaire.
Depending on whether they are local, you can meet in person or talk over the
phone.
