Pre-Planning
Benchmark:.
MACC2MD1.1 Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate
tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes.
MACC2MD1.2 Measure the length of an object twice, using length units of different
lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two measurements relate to the
size of the unit chosen.
MACC2MD1.3 Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.
MACC2MD1.4 Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another,
expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit.
MACC2MD1.4 Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another,
expressing the length difference in terms of a standard length unit.

Objective:
Measure the length of an object by selecting appropriate tools.
Measure using two different units and describe how the measurements relate to the
size of the unit.
Estimate lengths of objects.
Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another.

Assessment:
Daily enVision assignments.
Essential Questions:
How are standard units, such as inches, used to measure length?
How can you measure length using centimeters?
What are inches, feet, and yards?
Which classroom objects can be used to approximate the standard units centimeter and
meter?

Higher Order Questions:
T- Can you explain what an estimate is? How do your measure an object if it is not
exactly an inch? How would you decide what tool to use to measure an object?
W-How would you measure if you didnt have a ruler? If you wanted to measure to the
nearest centimeter, what on a ruler will help you decide? How do you decide what tool
to use to measure an object?
Th-Why is it important to be able to estimate when measure? How do you decide if
your measurement is reasonable? When have you ever estimated in your life? How
would you measure length if you didnt have a ruler?
F-Why is it important to be able to estimate when measuring? How do you decide if
your measurement is reasonable? When would you estimate a measurement in your
own life?

Vocabulary: estimate, measure, length, height, width, inch, nearest inch, tool, ruler,
yardstick, meter stick, measuring tape, centimeter, foot, meter
Focus for Instruction- Using the Gradual Release Model

Introduction (Set the Purpose of the lesson): In these sessions, students recognize the equivalent units, recognize measurement abbreviations, locate the starting point on a the
measuring tool, understand the relationship between the size of a unit and the number of units needed, measure real world objects to the nearest inch, centimeter, foot, yard, or
meter.
