1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity. Teachers use their knowledge of subject
matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student
learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.
What have I learned that will help me promote, support and model creative and
innovative thinking and inventiveness? Cite specific resources, techniques, and
technologies.
Response: Continually varying materials and subject matter is one way I like to
keep my instruction fresh. I use less complex mediums as an introduction to
techniques and then build on those with more developed projects and more
complex material uses. or instance! beginning with contour drawing of "# forms
with pencils and then next class doing a sample of different shading techniques with
pencils. $tudents were then instructed to select the shading method they liked most
to develop their contour sketch into a full value drawing. %ext I build on this
exercise by introducing Charcoal and its shading techniques with a sphere sample.
&fter that warm'up students are instructed to create an imaginary space! for an
abstract drawing and to develop a narrative that describes the space they(ve
invented.
b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems
using digital tools and resources.
Give examples of how you can explore real-world issues and engage students in
solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources. Describe specific
digital tools and resources for two real-world issues.
Response: I believe that finding topics that speak to creators is a big part of
inspiring creators. In my &rt II class we viewed the music videos of )om *aits
performing +,ell -roke .oose!/ a narrative about suffering and struggle. I asked
students to write down a few key points they saw in the performance and we
discussed them as a group after. I then asked them to think about how these
concepts could apply to their own lives. *hat struggles do they have0 #oes our city
have0 #oes the world have0 *e then selected the most powerful ideas to create
artwork about! including hunger! displacement! homelessness and war. $tudents
were given time to research images on the computer and in maga1ines to put
together their ideas for their drawings.
c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students
conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.
Which collaborative tools can you use to promote student reflection using reveal
and clarify students conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative
processes? Please list at least two tools, and describe how they achieve these
ends.
1
2008 ISTE NETST Journal
Response: I would use a class website and require students to upload images of
their work to the student gallery. 2ach student is required to use a blog style
comment system to give feedback to two other artists on their work! following the
practices of standard criticism: sandwiching positive feedback with points that show
where the student needs improvement. &nother tool I used to promote reflection is
to emulate an artist(s work from a preselected list of artists. I have students select
an artist and write a one page report on that artist and their work. )he student then
selects and recreates one work of art from the artist. &fter the work is completed!
the student writes a maximum of one page reflection on the creative process they
went through to mimic the style and creative process of the artist chosen. )his
information is presented to the class in the week following the assignment(s
completion.
d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students,
colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.
How do you model collaborative knowledge instruction face-to-face when engaging
in learning with students, colleagues and others? Please give three examples.
Response: *ith students I work on their drawings or artwork with them hands one.
3ften I draw a sample of whatever they are drawing! for instance a nose! next to
where they need to integrate it into the face and have them duplicate the strokes on
their own to learn how to draw the angles. *ith my professional peers I create
artwork based around a variety of themes for group shows and exhibitions. *e
often engage as a group about developing the ideas central to the show to make it
cohesive prior4during to art creation. *ith students and friends I discuss articles I
read about art and its meaning! for example the work of $hirin %eshat about place!
*esterni1ation and identity. I believe that sharing these work and our ideas about
them evolves art a discipline for the whole. 5ore than any other discipline I see art
as an exploration! a constantly changing construct that is a very integral part of our
lives.
How do you model collaborative knowledge instruction in virtual environments?
Response: I participate in online art forums on art history 6C&&7 and research. I
take progress shots of my work and post them on my website and engage with
commenters about my process. I post my work to social networks including
acebook and )witter and provide tutorial support for others to learn the techniques
I use. I use all these outlets to research others work and techniques to improve my
own work.
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments. Teachers design,
develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary
tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills,
and attitudes identified in the National Education Technology Standards for Students (NETSS).
Teachers:
a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and
resources to promote student learning and creativity.
2
2008 ISTE NETST Journal
How could you adapt a learning experience incorporating digital tools and
resources to promote student learning and creativity for a student with visual
impairment?
Response: I would rely mainly on audio learning software and programs to aid a
student with visual impairment! in addition to traditional "d mediums. I could also
see the benefit of using digital painting programs on a tablet or i8ad with a student
that has visual impairment! creating exercises based on the same physical senses
as sculpture. I would begin with doing 9blind( contour style paintings and drawings in
8hotoshop or Corel 8ainter and working upwards into more complex and
challenging work. 8art of the peer critique of this student(s work could be a visual
description of it that is recorded using &udioboo or a similar program so that the
student can more easily visual their creation.
How could you design a learning experience incorporating digital tools and
resources to promote student learning and creativity for a student who has difficulty
prioritizing during a project?
Response: I find that using a web accessible digital stopwatch for different parts of
an assignment helps keep students on task. I would project this digital stop watch
during class activities after telling students how much time they had for an exercise
and enforce moving on to another activity when time ran out. :sing a calendar or
digital software 6google calendar7 that is accessible for projects done on classroom
computers that have this same timing embedded would work well for digital in
classroom art.
b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to
pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own
educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.
Which technologies do you think you will most effectively be able to use in your art
classroom?
Response: I regularly use 8ower8oint presentations and videos to share
information with my students. I plan to incorporate more use of our class website
into my classroom and to have students become more active participants in the
website by posting their work and peer critiques in our student gallery.
List two technologies with which you want to become more familiar to eventually
incorporate into your classroom.
Response: I want to become more familiar with digital imaging software like
8hotoshop and video editing software. #igital art is very important and I want to be
able to prepare my students to not only be proficient in these tools but to feel
comfortable enough to develop their own artistic voices with them.
List five ways you can enable students to pursue their individual curiosities and
become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their
own learning, and assessing their own progress.
3
2008 ISTE NETST Journal
Response: Require students to teach a lesson on a topic to the class. &s part of this
assignment! students will be required to create a 8ower8oint presentation about the
topic and share it with class. )he research will be done on the internet! and the
8ower8oint creation will be in the classroom and at home. )he student will also
develop a project assignment for the topic! which I will approve ahead of time. 2ach
student in the class will post a preliminary sketch of their final product on the project
web blog of our website in the first stage of the assignment. *hen assignments are
completed! students will post photos of their work in the student gallery. 2ach
student will blog critique for two peers on this website in addition to create a critique
for their own work.
c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students diverse learning
styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.
List three learning styles and which digital tools or resources you could use to
facilitate learning for students with each style.
Response: )hree learning styles I cater to are audio! visual and kinesthetic
learners. I cater to audio learners by verbally presenting information on
assignments and instruction. I have begun using &udioboo to record this
information and posting it on my website. I cater to visual learners by creating video
tutorials and sharing those of others about assignments. I cater to kinesthetic
learners by using tablets in class that allow them to physically draw into 8hotoshop
digitally! making that integral physical connection for them.
List three work strategies and the digital tools or resources you could use to
facilitate learning for students with each preferred strategy.
Response: I should cater more to audio learners by recording assignments and
lectures on &udioboo and posting it on my website. I could cater to visual learners
by creating more video tutorials and challenging them to create their own about the
content we learn. I can cater to kinesthetic learners by using tablets! cameras and
other hands on digital technology in class that allow them to physically create digital
artwork.
Scenario: two students must work together to complete a project. Student A is great
at visually organizing information, while student B is a strong writer. Which digital
tools and resources could you employ to help students work together to complete
their task?
Response: I would recommend the use of 8ower8oint for the project! because is a
great combination of visual information and the written word. I would potentially
have $tudent - work with word processing software to write out the information and
ideas while $tudent & gathered and created images in 8hotoshop or on the internet.
$tudent & would take the lead in putting the information together in 8ower8oint! but
$tudent -e would still be integral in matching meaning4intent of writing with
imagery.
d. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments
aligned with content and technology.
What is the difference between formative and summative assessments? Please
provide descriptive examples.
4
2008 ISTE NETST Journal
Response: $ummative assessments are given periodically to determine at a
particular point in time what students know and do not know. 8rime examples of
summative assessments are statewide tests for standards of learning. ormative
&ssessment is actually part of the instructional process. *hen formative
assessment is incorporated into classroom practice! it provides the information
needed to adjust teaching and learning while it is happening. or example! after
demonstrating stippling shading and asking students what stroke is used to create
stippling a student says a line. )his can be corrected by showing a hands'on
demonstration that in fact dots are used to make stippling marks to shade! a
formative assessment adjustm
Give four examples of formative assessments aligned with content and technology
standards.
Response: I would set up a wiki spaces for group responses about texts for class
where students can record their learning and reflections. I would have students
create and publish their own rubric assessment online for an assignment before we
begin working. )hrough a class blog I will collaborate with students to design their
own projects ' rather than giving all students the same assignment ' that integrate
technology with their preferred learning and presentation style. :se an online pre'
assessment with short answers about the content for an assignment.
Give four examples of summative assessments aligned with content and
technology standards.
Response: :se an online post assessment about the unit after we have finished it.
8ost student work and have them grade themselves with an attached rubric backing
up their grade. 8erform online peer critique through the blog feature of our class
website looking at the student portfolio. ,ave students create a sample assignment
and publish it on our class website that addresses the same standards of art and
design we covered in our last assignment.
e. standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.
How will you use assessments to inform individual students of their progress? How
often will you inform them of their progress?
Response: I use ongoing summative assessments daily as I provide one'on'one
assistance with hands on studio assignments. I offer formative assessments at the
ends of the project(s completion in the form of written text and spoken critique.
How will you use assessments and resulting data to inform your teaching? How
often will you asses your data?
Response: I use power teacher to analy1e and interpret the data from grading to
address which students need remediation in specific content areas from
assignments. I provide remediation to those with scores of seventy percent and
below. I assess my data after each group of grades is input! approximately every
one to two weeks.
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning. Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes
representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
5
2008 ISTE NETST Journal
a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge
to new technologies and situations.
Describe a time when you had to transfer your current technical knowledge to a
new technical situation (examples: switching between Windows and OSX, different
text or image editing programs, migrating from a paper calendar to a digital
calendar, changing from a laptop to a netbook or smartphone). What challenges
did you encounter? How did you apply the knowledge you already possessed to
assist your adaption to the new technology?
Response: *hen I went to college I didn(t have a personal computer to bring with
me to another state! so I was forced to change from using 5icrosoft programs to
apple4mac programs and software. I encountered problems with the opposite style
of layout4arrangement of tools; even shortcuts used a different key for commands. I
used my existing tech savvy to search out the answers to problems that weren(t
readily identifiable through the internet and online &< documents. I was able to
adapt and thrive in the new environment with what initially appeared to me as alien
technology.
b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital
tools and resources to support student success and innovation.
Describe a time when you used digital tools to support collaboration with peers.
Response: In college I worked with a group to seamlessly create a digital collage in
8hotoshop. *e each developed a quarter of the document and digitally stitched the
images together to create one unified work of art. *e established a few basic rules!
but overall worked independently with different images to produce one cohesive
work.
What modifications might you need to make to the way you collaborated above
when dealing with students under the age of 13?
Response: =iving more standards or criteria and guidance towards specific colors
or compositional shapes in the work of art to make the work fit together smoothly.
c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and
peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats.
How will you effectively communicate ideas to students, parents, and peers using
digital media? Which media will you employ? Describe at least two formats for each
of the three audiences.
Response: I use the telephone! email and the internet to communicate with these
groups. 5y class website will incorporate a blog and ask a question form so that
students always feel free to ask questions. *e use google docs at my school to
manage attendance between peer teachers! I would like to use this to identify
students with grades falling between >?@ to see how we can work together to
improve their learning experiences and outcomes.
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate,
analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.
6
2008 ISTE NETST Journal
How do I use emerging technologies to locate information?
Response: I use the internet to research information I am not well versed in! to
expand my knowledge and classroom practices.
How do I use emerging technologies to analyze information?
Response: I use grade tracking software to analy1e student progress and determine
remediation needs.
How do I use emerging technologies to evaluate information?
Response: I use power teacher and a variety of report functions to evaluate my
teaching and student learning effectiveness.
How do I use emerging technologies to use information to support your my
learning?
Response: I utili1e 8ower8oint! email and my class website to support student
learning. In addition I show videos and listen to podcasts on education and art to
improve my own knowledge.
4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility. Teachers understand local and global
societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior
in their professional practices. Teachers:
a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and
technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the
appropriate documentation of sources.
What is digital citizenship?
Response: & concept which helps teachers! technology leaders and parents
understand what students! as users should know about how to use technology
appropriately.
How do I already model respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the
appropriate documentation of sources?
Response: I teach my students about copyright infringement and plagiarism and the
major disadvantages of doing these things.
Where can I improve my advocacy of ethical use of digital information?
Response: I could spend a day describing copyright law briefly to students and
have them actually go through the process of creating a copyright for one of their
works online! then digitally posting that copyright to our class website with their
work.
b. address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies and
providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.
7
2008 ISTE NETST Journal
Identify three different types of learners, and discuss a learner-centered strategy for
each that employs appropriate digital tools.
Response: )he three learning styles are audio! visual and kinesthetic learners. I
cater to audio learners by verbally by presenting information on and I could have
them record their own notes or questions in response to my instruction as part of
their experience. I cater to visual learners by creating video tutorials and sharing
those of others about assignments. Aisual learners can create their own videos
demonstrating the assignments! such as using a screencast to record a digital
collage. I cater to kinesthetic learners by using tablets in class that allow them to
physically draw into 8hotoshop digitally! making that integral physical connection for
them. )he most interesting kinesthetic learning opportunity I(ve experienced is the
use of a virtual reality C&# suit to record human movements to incorporate into
game design. I(ll be lucky if I get to do this with my own students.
What inequities are you aware of that lead to different learners failing to gain
access to appropriate digital tools?
Response: #ifferent living situations and income levels prevent some student from
having access to even computers! let alone more expensive software and
equipment. )his a problem in school districts as well.
c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to
the use of technology and information.
What is netiquette? Give two examples.
Response: %etiquette is the social and moral code of the internet. %ot typing in all
capital letters and not posting the same information twice on a web discussion
forum.
Identify two other rules of etiquette that relate to the use of specific technologies
(i.e. cell phone use, text messages, voicemail messages, email messages, blog
posts, social networking sites, and so forth). How did you become aware of these
rules?
Response: It is not appropriate to talk on your cell phone in a group of people. It is
not appropriate to text on your cell phone while giving a presentation or listening to
a presentation.
d. develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with
colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and
collaboration tools.
Have you ever engaged someone from another culture using digital-age
communication?
Response: I have engaged with artists in other countries with digital communication.
I have peers in 8oland and rance who I met through the College &rt &ssociation.
*e exchange teaching and painting advice with one another.
If not, how could you develop greater global awareness using digital age
communication and collaboration tools?

community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.
Teachers:
a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications
of technology to improve student learning.
Name two learning communities in which you participate which explore creative
applications of technology to improve student learning.
Response: I participate in the College &rt &ssociation 6C&&7! a community that
focuses on advancing art education. )hey hold symposiums every year on
advancements in educational leadership and new technology integration. I am a
member of the %ational &rt 2ducation &ssociation 6%&2&7! which serves to
advance visual arts education to fulfill human potential and promote global
understanding.
b. exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in
shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership
and technology skills of others.
Describe a way you demonstrate a vision of technology infusion.
Response: -y implementing technology whenever possible in my classroom! from
instruction to learning; I want to give my kids the most I can to experience and
create artwork in a variety of mediums.
How do you participate in shared decision making and community building in your
community?
Response: I have created classroom assignments that focus on generating work for
scholarship competitions and local design competitions. )his semester we
participated in doodleBgoogle and a t'shirt design competition for our school.
How have you contributed to developing the leadership and technology skills of
others?
Response: -y placing responsibilities on my students in the classroom to develop a
lesson plan and teach it to the class! I am introducing them to both of these
opportunities. $tudents are required to use various software programs to compose
their information and must literally lead the class through a presentation and
assignment.
c. evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis
to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in
support of student learning.
How do you keep up with current research and professional practice on a regular
basis?
9
2008 ISTE NETST Journal
Response: I devote a set amount of time to research on art through my various
memberships in art communities. In addition I spend a set amount of time in my
student creating artwork and expanding my knowledge base on technique.
How do you regularly evaluate and reflect on this information?
Response: I self'critique my work! comparing previous to present and judge what
areas still need more time and attention. I observe other teachers in their
classrooms and have peer observation for this same reason. In addition I post
scholarly analysis on the art education community websites I have memberships
with.
d. contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession
and of their school and community.
Name three ways you can you contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-
renewal of your profession, school and community.
Response: *orking with teachers in my district to help them develop and expand
teaching methodologies. 8roviding students with the tools and techniques to make
them successful and competitive in art and technological fields. 8ursuing creative
opportunities where art and other disciplines overlap! proving that it is still current
and full of endless possibility.
