Engage

The 5es Instructional Model

(DEECD, 2007) approach engage
relates to my pedagogical position
as students are encouraged to be
engaged in the task and the
individuals interests are targeted
to encourage them to think about
a skill or a concept freely. This can
be accomplished by the teacher
getting the students to tune into a
video about phonic sounds and
getting the students to sing along.
Then the teacher gets the
students to partake in a task
where they have to write the word
on the smart board, this allows
students to be engaged and tuned
into the activity.

Explore
As a constructivist I believe that students
need to develop deep understandings of
information to process information
correctly. The explore domain of the 5es
enforces this idea as it encourages
students to develop their own
understandings with a hands on
experience (DEECD, 2007). In the
classroom this can be accomplished
through exploration in science classes
when they may be exploring the concept
of floating and sinking, where students
may collect a number of objects and
physically experiment with the objects
determining whether they float or sink.

Explain
This domain connects to my student
centred position as a teacher by allowing
students to express their understandings
and link them to the concepts. The DEECD
(2007) enforces this phase as the time for
teachers to assist students in the
explanation of their experience and
relating to the concepts. This can be
accomplished by the teacher discussing
with the students their experiences. For
example; students who have explored
floating and sinking are then asked to
explain their experiences with
experimenting with objects. The teacher
assists by providing students with the
relevant concepts and the abilities to
express them in their explanations.

Elaborate
Within my research within the 5es I
have developed understandings
linking the elaborate phase to my
own student-centred and
constructivist approach as a teacher.
The 5es elaborate phase of the
Instructional Model expresses this
phase as the opportunity for students
to use the concepts and
understandings they have learnt and
apply it further into their
investigations (DEECD, 2007). This
phase works in relation to my belief
in that students can further their
understandings by comparing and
contrasting their ideas with others.

Evaluate
This phase of the 5es Instructional
Model is the final stage which gives
students the opportunity to reflect
on what they have learnt and their
understandings of important
concepts (DEECD, 2007). Through
this approach I have developed
understandings of what models
relate to my pedagogical position as a
constructivist teacher. For example in
this photo the students have used a
poster as a way to reflect on what
they have learnt and map their
understandings.
