TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Mark roll and Australian Values Close Passage (10mins)
2. 09:55 Focus questions for screening of TWTWB (15mins) write them up on board, have students copy them down. Model one
answer and discuss possible answers for others. You can rough notes/dot points while watching but these need to be converted to full
sentences later? Make sure they are aware that we will be discussing these answers after we finish watching the movie. Possibly have
these pre-written on board before lesson begins.
Focus questions- answers must be either in a sentence description of as a quote (name who said it)
1. Find Ellies quote to the official Australian value peacefulness. Can you find one by another character? (When Ellie says those
things just dont happen, not in this country!)
2. Find a quote of a characters use of Australian vernacular (slang)
3. Find a quote example of the Australian mateship officially called spirit of egalitarianism (tolerance, mutual respect, and
compassion)
4. Provide an example of a clash between these values and the depiction of contrasting values of the coalition (the unnamed
enemy in the film (e.g. when Ellie says she looked as young and as scared as I was) suggests conscription, opposite of freedom
and respect for individuals
5. Find an example of the unofficial Australian value Easy going characteristics
6. Find at least 3 examples of film techniques from the glossary provided. For example, the movie starts with a close up shot of
Ellies face.
